to wonder why person in front on plane always puts their fucking seat back the minute we take off

Im not talking long haul or night flights. Im talking day flights of a few hours duration. Theres precious enough leg room and the airlines cram us in like sardines - and I have 32ins legs meaning I practically get knee-capped by the seat in front as it is. But thats not bad enough - oh no - I get the only person on the plane - and I know this cos Ive looked round and checked !! who absolutely has to put their seat back the minute we take off. So now I've got cramp, I'm starting to lose all feeling in my legs - I cant reach down to get some light entertainment or pain relief !! out of my bag without cricking my neck - the inflight movie is pointing towards my pelvic area because of the angle of the seat in front and to cap it all Ive got some fucking complete ignorant arsehole strangers head in my lap for the entire flight.

Ask them politely to put their seat back up then.

Topcat11 · 08/08/2010 21:15

Yanbu!!! Always happens to me too - and yet I feel guilty if I put my seat back cos then I'm inflicting the same pain on someone else!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/08/2010 21:15

YANBU.

There's no need to recline seats on short flights.

End of story.

fartblossom · 08/08/2010 21:17

I personally think if you are paying for standard fare you should not be able to move your seat. The option of moving seats back should be a paid extra like in first or business class. You pay the cheap seats, you have to sit up. Its only fair.

compo · 08/08/2010 21:17

You're mumsnetting from a plane!!!! Coool!

FranSanDisco · 08/08/2010 21:18

I'd rather be asked though than have some narked passive aggressive kicking the back of the seat like the old woman sitting behind me a few years ago.

madmn52 · 08/08/2010 21:26

Yes FranSanDisco - I have asked them politely - but these are not considerate polite souls in general in the first place - hence the inconsiderate behaviour - I have nearly ended up having stand up rows - only for the fact I cant - stand up that is !

Topcat11 - yes exactly me too - two wrongs dont make a right.

Feel your pain, I can only wish my legs were 'only' 32in though. My knees are pushed against the back before the seat in front is reclined and I get dirty looks from the recliner for the natural resistance my knees offer, they always seem to think continuinig the recline is more important than not giving me a compression injury though!

madmn52 · 08/08/2010 21:34

FranSanDisco - fair comment I agree and I do always give the person in front the benefit of the doubt - unless you tell someone they are causing you discomfort they dont realise and some people if they do realise will compromise and so on

Compo -no Im not on a plane - would only be able to open my laptop about an inch if I was probably Smile

Whenever I fly long haul they make you put them up for meals etc.

Not that I'd ever fly Cuntas Qantas

ifancyashandy · 08/08/2010 21:41

This is why I only fly long haul at night. Then it is acceptable for everyone to put their seat back after the meal and tried to get some shut eye.

thecatatemygymsuit · 08/08/2010 21:42

I don't get this - how are we meant to sleep without reclining our seats!?
I am that annoying person who kips for 2 hours on a 2 1/2 hour flight btw, sorry! Grin

Wandaaa · 08/08/2010 21:43

Somebody did this to me once and I stuck my knees into the back of them, if they are ignorant enough to recline their seat then I think they are fair game for a knee in the back. Mind yoou she'd already upset me as she sat in her seat by tutting at DD who was 2 and making a slight noise. AND she was at the front of the plane and had nobody in front of her!!!!!

I'm too chicken to ask them myself but always get the hostess to ask them to put it up.

Some plonkers put the seat down when you have your tray out eating your lunch.

YADNBU

tethersend · 08/08/2010 21:44

The person in front of you isn't about 7ft tall with an afro, perchance? Because I think it may be the same guy who sits in front of me in audiences.

mumblechum · 08/08/2010 21:47

No, that would be my ds, Tethersend (tho' the afro's just been trimmed).

MyMamaToldMe · 08/08/2010 21:48

Whenever we fly shorthaul and the person in front of starts to recline, I put my hands against the back of thier seat and just push back, so the person reclining does feel resistence, but doesn't know it is me. Generally they just give up, thinking the chair is broken. Grin

HaveToWearHeels · 08/08/2010 21:49

I was on a four hour flight to Turkey in June and had 9 month old DD on my lap. Inconsiderate numpty put his seat back as soon as he got on the flight. After about an hour of my daughter banging her head everytime she moved my partner asked him if he could put his seat up. He mumbled something and put it up, but after a trip to the loo he reclined it again, so I let DD kick the back of his seat for the rest of the flight.

madmn52 · 08/08/2010 21:52

maryz - I went to New Zealand once -12 hour flights - you guessed it - man in front had seat back all the way - when he went to toilet or stretch his legs or whatever- he was gone a long time anyway - I reached over back of his seat and put it upright - when he came back I wedged my knees up on back of seat and he kept trying to jolt it back again - but I stood firm - or my knees did I should say - will probably need knee replacements when Im older but at least I had my little moment of triumph - sad or what. I think we should get a slogan try and get the airlines to join in - we are a knee cap friendly airline - or - dont get a fine - no need to recline - sorry getting really sad now.

PinkyMe · 08/08/2010 21:53

Much as I hate this, the seat reclines so people should be able to use it like this. Blame the airline for squashing in as many as possible without leaving room for anyone over 5 foot.
Only time it shouldn't be done is when the light comes on asking you to put your seat upright (Meals, landing and take off)

madmn52 · 08/08/2010 21:59

tethersend - you are so funny - in answer to your question I would say yes - or at least the angrier I get the more obtrusive they become and by the end of the flight even a little old lady has become that 7ft man with an afro - but only in my mind !
