to wonder why person in front on plane always puts their fucking seat back the minute we take off

Im not talking long haul or night flights. Im talking day flights of a few hours duration. Theres precious enough leg room and the airlines cram us in like sardines - and I have 32ins legs meaning I practically get knee-capped by the seat in front as it is. But thats not bad enough - oh no - I get the only person on the plane - and I know this cos Ive looked round and checked !! who absolutely has to put their seat back the minute we take off. So now I've got cramp, I'm starting to lose all feeling in my legs - I cant reach down to get some light entertainment or pain relief !! out of my bag without cricking my neck - the inflight movie is pointing towards my pelvic area because of the angle of the seat in front and to cap it all Ive got some fucking complete ignorant arsehole strangers head in my lap for the entire flight.

People don't tend to do this to my husband - they look at him getting on the plane, unable to stand up straight and look at him with sympathy trying to fold himself into the seat and cut him some slack thankfully (I think he beats the 36 inch legs - he's 6 foot 7).

Thankfully we only ever do short internal flights (I hate hate hate hate hate flying - I like gravity when I'm on the winning side of it) up to Inverness to see the relatives which is an hour and a bit maximum.

Suda · 09/08/2010 11:23

Im firmly on the side of the people behind these ignoramus.Cant we just bring back garotting - can you still buy garotts in a fetish shop maybe. You could always argue - well it had garott function on it Grin

ChippinIn - to be fair i just think MayorQuimby has his tongue firmly stuck in his cheek - bit like his knees firmly stuck in the seat really - dont think he s angry and petty at all - very funny though.

I understand your pain. I'm not especially tall but have very long femurs.

On one flight to Lanzarote (4 hours) some cow put her seat back and then had the audacity to complain about my knees in her back. I told her that , short of amputation, there was very little I could do.

madmn52 · 09/08/2010 11:59

Also I cant undertand this thread running through by some posters i.e. - why should they be uncomfortable by not reclining to make the person behind more comfortable. Lets start from the top again shall we !
You and the person behind get on the plane and you both have exactly the same leg room and air space in front of you etc - even Stephens at that point right - then you in front decide - ooh no Im not comfortable - so I know what I ll do - I'll take over some of the space from the poor unsuspecting bastard behind me and then I'll have more and he'll have even less. Mmmm - very fairHmm.

x-stich your last one was so funny - having Mr and Mrs Oblivious in front AND behind - did the words -'surrounded by idiots' spring to mind.

I suspect we'll just have to agree to disagree.

However, sorry I don't understand - how does having the seat in front reclined stop you getting up to go to the loo? I've never (on any flight) not been able to get up because of a reclined seat. I've crossed my legs when the person on the aisle seat is asleep (and one one occasional climbed over them to general hilarity) but I've always been able to get out.

stleger · 09/08/2010 12:16

I'd pay extra to fly in planes with non reclining seats. Are you listening Michael O'leary and Stelios?

Suda · 09/08/2010 12:16

And dont even start me off on armrests Angry

madmn52 · 09/08/2010 12:29

bedubabe - I know what you mean - I have never been completely unable to get out of my seat because of a recliner. But I do agree also that it makes it more difficult because of the angle of the seat in front - you have to sort of stand up and lean back at same time and so have to hang onto the seat in front - bit like rock climbing - Mmmm .. pickaxe - now theres an idea Grin

xstitch · 09/08/2010 12:40

I could't stand up, the seat in front was resting on my knees to stand up would have resulted in the top of the chair hitting my stomach. Not a good idea in the circumstances. That was before I could even consider climbing over the person next to me. The person next to me and in front of me would have been a severe risk of being hit or kicked accidently if I had attempted it. Remember I had been unable to move for over an hour so my legs had already gone to sleep rendering acrobatic/Houdini like manouvres almost impossible.

Maybe I am ignorant and will probably be told so but I still fail to see how my actions (or more lack of action) was inconsiderate or rude towards any of my fellow passengers.

bedubabe · 09/08/2010 12:43

Wow that's a very reclined seat!

Well no you weren't being inconsiderate or rude. Did someone refuse to move their seat up to let you get out? I agree that's inconsiderate.

millimurphy · 09/08/2010 12:47

Amongst all the accusations and counter attacks, it is easy to loose sight of the real culprits here - in this case the airlines. They want to maximise profit and so cram in as many seats as inhumanely possible. How about mass letters of complaint, boycotting of the worst space offenders and maybe a couple of internet campaigns (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube - whatever you favour)? Bad press and advertising for them is more likely to get a result than arguing whether or not you are entitled to recline your seat.

And you can only do about 80mph on the autobahns. Any faster and the police start to gesticulate at you wildly and yelling in a funny language...

xstitch · 09/08/2010 12:50

Yes bedu. I asked if they could possibly raise their seat enough just long enough for me to get out to the toilet. The answer was no I can't you selfish fuckwit. I didn't wake them up to ask, I used please and I didn't ask that the keep the seat up despite the pain by that point it was causing. I then had four and a half hours of increasing pain trying not to have an accident.

domeafavour · 09/08/2010 12:51

yabu

just recline your own seat and you have the same amount of room

that's what they are there for.
i can't believe that people think it's ok to kick or put your knees in someone's back!

coraltoes · 09/08/2010 12:51

it is because of the petty people who kick reclined seats, poke knees into them, that i fly business class long haul. I dont care about the price, as long as I can pop that flat bed down and sleep I can happilly forget about all the twits who seem to think they are the only ones with rights to enjoy a flight in comfort.

bedubabe · 09/08/2010 12:51

millimurphy - airlines will cram in so many seats because passengers aren't willing to pay extra for more leg space. There are few airlines at the moment making significant profits.

If we were prepared to pay more to travel on a flight with fewer seats the airlines would provide it. Instead the airlines (eg BA) who did provide more leg room have had to lower their fares and squeeze more seats in.

Which are the ones without a speedlimit? I thought it was autobahns!

bedubabe · 09/08/2010 12:53

xstitch - completely out of order (them not you). Personally, I would have got cabin crew involved and loudly requested a potty :)

xstitch · 09/08/2010 13:02

I wasn't being petty with my knees being on the chair in front. The whole reason from me not moving was because to do so would be dig them in more. It was physically impossible to move my legs back any further due to my own seat and the life jacket under it being in position. At no point have I said I am the only one with rights in fact I did not go to the toilet, I tried best as possible not to place my back against the back of my chair due to the person behind having her feet on the upper part of my upright seat. I didn't drink anything for the entire flight so that it wouldn't put extra pressure on my bladder. I declined the meal because there was no room to sit it anywhere and would have contains fluids. If that makes me a petty twit with no consideration for the comfort of others then god help us all.

What more could I have done to increase the comfort of the others on the plane?

madmn52 · 09/08/2010 13:03

No Domeafavour - neither do I - thats why we've moved on to garotts and pickaxes - do keep up Grin
