John Scott was back because he likes dressing 'curvy' ladeez!

They had people on who are doing some sort of pageant, talking about how they were bullied for their weight issues in school and how this is giving them confidence.

He showed swimsuits that 'take 10lbs of you' swimsuits that 'go up to a size 32' and ways to drape a sarong to show off your 'curves'

AIBU in thinking that theres a difference in being curvy and being clinially obese?????
Yes its fine to not be a size 8, yes its fine to enjoy your food, yes its fine to wear swimwear whatever age or size you are ....... but calling these ladies 'curvy' One of them was clearly clinically obese, and he was celebrating the fact that these women could wear swimwear and embrace their bodies.

Sorry but you can embrace your body as much as you like, but being that weight is not healthy, its just as bad as putting super skinny size 0 models on there are saying how great they look in swimwear

dont know how I would have liked him to phrase it really, but i just thought why is he celebrating this.
You wouldnt have someone standing their smoking would you whilst we all ignore it and call it something else?

Maybe large ladies would have been better, because then youre neither being nasty or skirting the issue

Oh FFS........so now I'm not "normal" because the BMI charts say I'm obese?! Right.........I am now off to hide this thread before I get very angry and make myself some MN enemies.

mosschops30 · 05/08/2010 12:40

I use cigarettes for comfort when Im stressed or pissed off. I do it, then hate myself because I knwo its bad for me and could ultimately kill me.
But my decision to smoke when stressed is my choice, and I take responsibility for that.

Same as overeating, its killing me, but I dont expect anyone to not mention it!
You get tutted at for smoking in the street or outside of work or whatever.

Oh for god's sake. I am fat and currently on a diet ( 11 1/2 pounds down so far, thanks). I still need a fecking swimsuit. Fat people know they are fat, they don't need to be berated for it every minute of the day you know.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/08/2010 12:42

i think you get tutted at for smoking because other people have to breathe in the smoke, it's different.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/08/2010 12:43

anyway, mosschops, if you are not fat, why do you care so much if others are?

MovingBeds · 05/08/2010 12:43

no, someone would be standing there smoking, obviously

Big girls you are beautiful

Morloth · 05/08/2010 12:43

You know what used to annoy me? No gym kit in larger sizes. Probably because normal people don't want to see fat people in their gyms/pools. Not as though working out and feeling good about it would help or anything.

gorionine · 05/08/2010 12:43

"bollocks to sensitivity, maybe if we could say 'youre starving yourself to death and you look terrible' and 'youre fat, and youre damaging your heart so you need to lose some weight' this wouldnt be a problem"

Mosschop30, a lady can be obese and trying to loose weight at the same time, it usually does not happen overnight to go from a size 20 to a size 12, does that mean that until you are actually "acceptable" you are banned from the beach or swimming pools?

Iloveclimbinghills · 05/08/2010 12:43

I half watched it and did not get the impression they were saying Fat is fabulous now get yourselves a donut and wash it down with some sugared vegetable oil. I just thought they were acknowledging that the plus sized market is a big one and those ladies need swimming costumes.

mosschops30 · 05/08/2010 12:44

read the thread glasto its not about the bloody swimsuit its about being obese and being called 'curvy' instead.

There is a massive trend of normalising being overweight (as someone said).
Maybe if we didnt it would encourage people to lose weight instead of thinking that being over a size 20 is 'normal'

If larger women want to call themselves curvy or anything else, that's fine by me. What annoys me is that it's often said in the same breath as criticising slim women, implying that they have a lack of curves.

When not pregnant, I'm a size 8-10 and very curvy (which actually makes in hard to buy clothes, as most clothes now are cut with around a 6 inch waist to hip difference, whereas mine is 11 inches).

Women of all sizes are curvy, just like women of all sizes are more straight up and down. I don't see why women have to criticise each others body shapes.

MovingBeds · 05/08/2010 12:47

don't read the comments at the bottom though

I don't suppose it matters that mika is gay

mosschops30 · 05/08/2010 12:49

JUST TO RECAP:

I am not saying larger women shouldnt wear swimsuits
I am not saying that larger women dont want to lose weight
I am not saying larger women shouldnt use a gym or pool
I am not critising one shape in favour of another

What I am saying is that when someone is clearly obese and risking their health it is wrong to skirt round the issue and call it something else (whether thats 'heres jane shes a curvy size 6' or 'heres jayne shes a curvy size 32')
Why should it not be mentioned people are happy to point out when people are killing themselves through drugs/drink/tobacco but not through weight issues

OP posts:
nowherewoman · 05/08/2010 12:51

I don't understand what you think would be achieved by telling someone they are obese? If it was that simple, they would already have lose weight. You can't seriously think they're not aware if they're a size 32. There's obviously a lot more to it than that.

FindingMyMojo · 05/08/2010 12:52

OP you seem to be saying that there cant' be a fashion segment for curvy fat women without a lecture on how bad it is for your health to be overweight?

What exactly are you offended about? That skinny people are called thin/slim and not skeletal? That fat women are called curvy and not obese? On a fashion segment?

Just listen to yourself!

glastocat · 05/08/2010 12:52

mosschops30, I have read the thread and also watched the clip on This Morning. I am just pointing out that fat people get slagged off all the freaking time, WE KNOW we are fat, it is unhealthy etc etc, it doesn't have to be brought up in every single minute of the live long day ( although sometimes it feels like it!) A fairly light hearted swim wear clip is maybe one opprtunity to let us fatties feel that we can maybe venture into the pool looking ok, and not like freaks. I have some friends who won't go swimming at all because they haven't the confidence to wear a swim-suit as they feel they are being judged. I thought that was silly of them, looks like they were right and I was wrong.

Casmama · 05/08/2010 12:53

What are you the fucking vocabulary police - you don't like using the word curvy in this way then don't use it.

Iloveclimbinghills · 05/08/2010 12:53

I think you can say that someone is a curvy size 32, because there will be others who are a sraight up and down 32.

Society is very aware that someone who is clinically obese is killing themslelves. Television is full of programmes preaching that message.

I just don't think this television piece was the time to be reminding these women that they are unhealthy.

gorionine · 05/08/2010 12:54

That is called being diplomatic and aware that you can do more harm that good by always saying things the way they are.

And you should be very grateful for that OP

I can honestly say I have never pointed at anyone who takes drugs, smokes or drinks too much and I expect the same respect back.

MovingBeds · 05/08/2010 12:54

Swimming is GREAT for losing weight and getting fit aswell but how many overweight people actually feel comfortable donning a costume and actually going swimming?

I suppose you could always look at it that way? a softly softly approach

CerealOffender · 05/08/2010 12:55

i think if you are size 20, watching that tv segment might be quite nice and maybe encourage you to get a swim suit and enjoy going to teh pool with your kids or getting a bit of low impact exercise. i do not think it would make anyone thing hurrah lets eat more cake cos being curvy is so aspirational.

Iloveclimbinghills · 05/08/2010 12:56

I agree.

gorionine · 05/08/2010 12:57

So do I!

nowherewoman · 05/08/2010 12:57

Obviously weight and overeating is a complicated subject, but perhaps if these women started to feel a bit better about themselves, maybe started to do a bit of exercise wearing swimsuits they felt comfortable in, started to wear some nice comfortable clothes etc, they might just start to lose weight naturally.
