To think if Ian Huntley gets compensation

he should give it to the government to pay towards the prison service?

This has made me so angry so apologies if its long and ranty but ffs
This evil man killed two innocent children and now according to the news he is likely to gain at least 20k! I'm sure I've read somewhere that if someone on benefits wins the lottery they are expected to pay back some money, why should this be any different? I wonder how much taxpayers money is going towards keeping him behind bars? What a shame his attacker didn't finish the job! Ugh disgusting vile evil man, whats he going to do with that money anyway?!
Sorry ladies I did warn you, anyway I feel better for having got that off my chest!

He shouldn't get a penny.

He shouldn't even be there, in cases like this where its 100% obvious he murdered 2 innocent children people should be hanged.

Thats my honest opinion.

Clear cut cases like this, the ripper, bradey and Hindley etc they really should hang them.

People talk about death sentances not being smething a civilised society would do, but our society is not a place for child murderers.

AlaskaNebraska · 01/08/2010 10:05

he has the same right to be protected from harm as anyone else

edam · 01/08/2010 10:20

The prisoner who slashed his throat may well be a murderer, a rapist, a wife-beater... do we really want to leave it to criminals to dole out punishment to other criminals?

Huntley has been punished according to the law. We don't have lynch mobs in this country, thank God.

I don't really want him to get compensation BUT the prison service has to be accountable for keeping prisoners safe, otherwise it's mob rule. (Actually a prison governor I know says prisons work on the basis of mutual consent - there are more prisoners than officers and plenty of the prisoners are violent thugs.)

Marjee · 01/08/2010 10:28

I don't believe in the death penalty, as much as I despise that man for the disgusting crime he committed. I think we should feel proud to live in a civilised society which refuses to stoop to his level.

What makes me angry is the double standards and the lack of common sense.

People who have paid their taxes all their lives and done nothing wrong except for getting old have to use their savings and assets to pay for care. Just like every free law abiding citizen has to pay for the roof over their head, food and public services. Yet he receives everything for free, having done the most wicked thing possible. If he gains any money, through compensation or any other way he should be expected to pay for the services he receives just like anybody else!

AlaskaNebraska - he should not have the same rights as anyone else - he KILLED two innocent 10 year old children FFS WHY should he have the same rights as you or I? WHY????

I bet you would feel significantly different about this if those girls were your daughters.

AlaskaNebraska · 01/08/2010 10:32

no I do believe prisoners have rights.
Even if they had " killed my daughters" I dont believe vengeance is the best reaction.

ChippingIn · 01/08/2010 10:33

Edam - no we don't necessarily want to leave it to other prisioners to dole out punishment and when things like this happen it should be looked into and 'sorted out' to prevent it happening again. However, compensation should not be an option.

You can have accountability without compensation.

Marjee - I don't see it as 'stooping to this level' the only reason I don't think capital punishment is a good idea is that I don't trust our justice system to get it right 100% of the time. I do agree with the rest of your post though!

AlaskaNebraska · 01/08/2010 10:34

its interesting on this thread how angry you all are. I belive in the UN charter of human rights. I am sure you all do too really.
?Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
?No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

And the fact that he didnt respect it will in NO way affect my belief in it.

mrsruffallo · 01/08/2010 10:39

I don't see why the compensation should be financial, especially if he is in prison for the rest of his life.
I don't see how denying him a cash pay out equates to a denial of his human rights either.
I am sure there has been an internal inquiry and the staff on duty have been suitably chastised, and that is enough of a consequence in my eyes.
It's obviously the suggestion of his lawyers, whom I am sure are trying to make a packet out of this.

mrsruffallo · 01/08/2010 10:42

I can understand why people are angry.

ChippingIn · 01/08/2010 10:45

AlaskaNebraska

Yes I am angry - I am angry that a piece of shit like this even has the opportunity to claim for compensation, let alone receive it.

NO I do NOT believe everyone has the right to life - I don't believe murdering scum bags like IH deserve the right to life - he forfeited that when he killed two children.

I don't want to send this thread spiraling in a different direction, but no, as it happens, I don't believe in your second bullet point either, but that's for another thread, another day.

So could you please refrain from making stupid statements such as I belive in the UN charter of human rights. I am sure you all do too really

MrsC2010 · 01/08/2010 10:50

So if someone murders a murderer in prison what happens to that person? They have taken a human life, do we then start determining who is worth punishing over, or do we decide they 'did us a favour' as seems to be advocated by some on here? Who becomes this moral arbitrator with a God-like say over human life?

Pioneer · 01/08/2010 10:58

I am sure that there are many many people who do not believe in the UN Charter of human rights.....

electra · 01/08/2010 11:06

YABU - his crime is irrelevant. The state has a duty of care - he is doing what is within his rights in that context.

A society can be judged best upon how it treats those who are difficult to like or sympathise with. Thankfully in this country, everyone is treated humanely whatever they have done - ie the state rises above the crime that person has committed.

That is how it should be. Perhaps some of you would prefer your children to be raised in a society where people are marched into an arena and publicly shot, often without a fair trial.....like China?

It's that anger that I don't want anywhere near our criminal justice system. What happens to people who do the worst things in our society has to be decided in an objective way.

Considering he's tried to commit suicide before, the best punishment I can think of is to make him live out every second, minute and hour of every day of his sentence, he shouldn't be able to escape taking responsiblility for his crime like the coward we know he is.

ChippingIn · 01/08/2010 11:24

Electra - the state has a duty of care, if it failed in this duty it has an obligation to find out how and put measures in place to stop it happening again. I do not agree that a murderer (or anyone else in prision for that matter) should be able to claim compensation - it should NOT be his 'right' to do so.

Where has anyone on this thread given you any cause to say Perhaps some of you would prefer your children to be raised in a society where people are marched into an arena and publicly shot, often without a fair trial.....like China? ??

Marjee · 01/08/2010 11:39

Electra please read the thread! This is such an emotive subject and the majority of us are mothers so of course people are going to be calling for violent revenge but that is not the point!

What I am trying to say is that he should use his money to pay for the services he receives the same as everyone else in a civilised society (which I am proud to be part of)! I was furious when I posted last night and should not have made the comment about wishing his attacker had finished the job so apologies for that, of course I would not like to live somewhere where human rights are blatantly disregarded.

OP posts:
electra · 01/08/2010 11:46

Calling for 'violent revenge' is not the answer nor is it reasonable! I'm a mother too. I want my children to grow up in a civilised society, thanks.

My comment about China was in response to various baying for blood. It's a knee jerk response. Understandable for people to instinctively feel that way, but should the law be fashioned on it? I don't think so.

Riven 'How come people like him in prison who get attacked can claim thousands and thousands but schoolkids subjected to violent and non-stop bullying get bugger all?'

The two things are separate issues, aren't they?

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/08/2010 11:48

I'm perfectly calm, and have no hesitation in saying that I'm sorry his attacker didn't finish the job. Fingers crossed for next time.

electra · 01/08/2010 11:48

Oh and the answer to that is probably that for school kids to get compensation the LEA would be the ones sued, and we all know how unwilling they are to part with their cash don't we?!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/08/2010 11:49

The LA/LEA's would only be sued if it happened on school grounds in school time. Outwith school you'd have a hard time getting compensation from anyone sadly.

ChippingIn · 01/08/2010 11:52

Electra - even if I was 'baying for blood' which I'm not, if you actually read my posts which are about the compensation.... it still doesn't mean I would want 'blood' without a fair trial? Why are you mixing all 3 points up?

  • Fair trial
  • Sentence
  • Compensation

You comment on Riven's point being 2 separate issues, whilst doing the same thing yourself?!

Marjee · 01/08/2010 11:54

Electra where exactly have I said the law should be fashioned on people baying for blood?!

lady007pink · 01/08/2010 12:20

Chippingin - that was meant to be a joke! Just like our justice system....
