to want to shout at Primark shoppers?

I mean really, just how many shoppers without a conscience are there? There really is no justification for shopping somewhere that treats its garment workers so badly and has continued to do despite years of campaigning.

Primark are thriving in the economic downturn making workers lives worse and worse as they struggle to keep up with orders. Being poor is no excuse, I can?t afford to buy new clothes but I?d rather my few quid went to Oxfam than ABF and their cruel trading practices. So tell me, why do people shop there? The quality is terrible too, how is it a bargain if an item of clothing lasts ten minutes?

I?m not just reading the Daily Mail by the way, researching things like this is my job, the working conditions have NOT improved and it?s just making me angry! AIBU to think more people should care?

shout at shoppers?? thats abusive....yabu

ZeppoMarx · 22/07/2010 15:43

yabu
Primark aren't the only guilty ones and some prople really do have no choice. I'm lucky to have fab charity shops, but 'being poor is no excuse'? I guess you'd have us all buying free range meat too. The poor can be vegetarian eh

baiyu · 22/07/2010 15:43

Ok, not actually shout at them I'm rather mild mannered really, just ask them nicely why they choose to shop there?

'researching things like this is my job' - well go and do it then - don't start a thread to do it for you.

domesticdiva · 22/07/2010 15:44

There are better things to focus anger at, maybe the manufacturers themselves rather than the shoppers sorry but YABU.

Rockbird · 22/07/2010 15:44

YABU. It's down to the individual to care or not care. None of your business.

I don't shop there, they only make clothes for tiny skinny people so I'm out but as far as I've seen from other people, the quality seems to be as good as anything you'd get on the high street.

baiyu · 22/07/2010 15:44

I would actually, I only eat meat once or twice a week as that's all we can afford.

ZeppoMarx · 22/07/2010 15:45

Have a medal

GypsyMoth · 22/07/2010 15:46

if you asked my 16 year old and her mates then they wouldnt have a clue.....most teenagers wouldnt, and ALOT of them shop there

you're wrong to assume we should all know the history of every shop we purchase items from

baiyu · 22/07/2010 15:46

I am doing my job and I do get angry at the manufacturers, I'd just like to know how people justify children making their children's clothes?

YABU

Shout at Tesco shoppers if you like. Tesco procurement activities with small companies and farms is shocking.

Shout at everyone who drives a car. Because the small value components will be obtained from low cost economies. The companies with whom the car companies and their suppliers have contracted with will have sub-contracted that work out several times. At the bottom of the pile is a shocking factory making components for a few pence an hour.

Ditto computer products.

Ditto mobile phones.

It is the effect of globalisation on a massive scale, and it is abhorrent, however shouting at people who are buying knickers for a pound, whilst having a wholier than thou attitude re Oxfam, isn't really going to help much.

MissAnneElk · 22/07/2010 15:47

I don't shop at primark because I don't like it - you're right the quality is poor but YABU because many other retailers do the same and charge higher prices.

ZeppoMarx · 22/07/2010 15:47

Where do you shop then baiyu? I'm sure you know the absolute ins and outs of their manufacturing practices

HecateQueenOfWitches · 22/07/2010 15:47

why would anyone choose to shop in a place where things are only a few pounds?

Because they only have a few pounds.

I'm sure that, given the choice, they'd prefer the expensive gear. I don't think anyone with pots of money shops in Primark instead of next or

baiyu · 22/07/2010 15:47

I just think people should question where they shop that's all, I'm not assuming everyone knows.

OP posts:
MoonUnitAlpha · 22/07/2010 15:47

Just Primark? Anyone else we should be boycotting or are all other companies beacons of virtue?

TheCrackFox · 22/07/2010 15:47

I would imagine all high street shops have their clothes made in sweat shops. At least Primark pass on those "savings" to their customers.

runnybottom · 22/07/2010 15:47

And how exactly do they differ from every other shop? They DON'T.
I can't afford to have all my clothes hand woven from organic hemp by elves.

ReasonableDoubt · 22/07/2010 15:48

It's not just Primark, it's half the high street. Primark are probably the least worst, because they don't mark up their sweatshop goods to ridiculously high prices.

scrappydappydoo · 22/07/2010 15:49

YABU - Primark aren't the only bad ones you know - expensive labels which are just as bad. Agree with domesticdiva - redirect your anger

ZeppoMarx · 22/07/2010 15:49

Made by elves?
I must start a campaign at once. Stop elf cruelty now.

GypsyMoth · 22/07/2010 15:49

lol runnybottom...

GeekOfTheWeek · 22/07/2010 15:51

YABU and patronising.

baiyu · 22/07/2010 15:51

Alright, I'll share my anger around You're dead right, they are not the only ones by a long way, but right now along with Asda and Tesco they are the worst.

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 22/07/2010 15:55

Are you only angry about shops where working class people frequent?
