i'm sure theres alot of people on here that wouldn't agree, but why?

it's not like they can be cured.

and if they do something THAT bad, they shouldn't be allowed that chance to again

YABU ie you are being unclear but probably unreasonable too.

Are there any shades of grey in your argument? Any degrees of severity to the offence or are we assuming that paedophiles are one homogeneous mass?

coventgarden · 21/07/2010 17:25

as to the point of this thread and where the thought came from.

slushy · 21/07/2010 17:27

They can be cured it is called castration and it takes away their sex drive do you think those that volunteer for this before harming anyone should also be executed.

Personally think they should be kept in a mental institute as there is obviously something wrong until they are certified no risk like other mental diseases (in other words never) But I think it should be treated like a mental illness personally.

SirBoobAlot · 21/07/2010 17:30

YABU.

Its never that black and white.

Thistledew · 21/07/2010 17:31

So would you kill or lock up for life a 17 year old boy who had sex with his girlfriend the day before her 16th birthday?

Yes, there are some sexual crimes against children that are so inherently repulsive that you could not feel any leniency towards the perpetrator, but unfortunately there is no clear dividing point between those offences which are that repulsive, and those, as in the example above, which I think that no-one could really justify killing the 'offender'.

MrsGangly · 21/07/2010 17:33

Paedophiles are not all mentally ill - to suggest otherwise is to give them an excuse for what they do and to say that they could not have helped themselves.

Just because we don't like how some people behave or find their behaviour offensive does not make them mentally ill.

Those who are mentally ill deserve to be looked after and given appropriate treatment before being rehabilitated into normal society.

carriedababi · 21/07/2010 17:45

well there can never be a perfect system, but you have to draw the line somewhere and make examples to put others off doing the same.

i would say anything that involves actually abusing a child[touching etc]
taking a childs innocence, and probably ruining their life.
should result in life, meaning rest of life in locked away or lethal injection.

a 16/17 year old having sex with a 15 year old, 10 years in prison.

you have to draw the line some where, and an 18 year old having sex/legally raping a 15 year old would result in rest of life in prision as i would say 16/17 is the grey area if there has to be one.
and 18 and above black and white

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/07/2010 17:47

A paedophile may not go on to abuse children. There has been at least one case of a paedophile committing suicide because he knew his sexual attraction to children was wrong, and he was worried he may act on it.

You may as well be worried about "normal" males who have a sexual interest in women. Does this mean they will be unable to control their urges and rape?

You are confusing paedophile with child abuse.

Many people who abuse children are not technically paedophiles, for them it is about dominance and power, rather than sexual attraction.

GypsyMoth · 21/07/2010 17:48

and supposing our 'judicial system' got the wrong man?? what then?? thought this through have you...

Greensleeves · 21/07/2010 17:48

10 years in prison for shagging your girlfriend

you are a few drops short of a piss if you are serious about that

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/07/2010 17:49

Oh, and YABU and pretty scary as well..

GypsyMoth · 21/07/2010 17:51

and my sceptism comes from someone who has seen first hand what a paedophile did to an innocent 8 year old boy......i was one of first officers on the scene when his body was found.....i spoke to his murderer, the paedophile....it was not a nice sight and i think about it ALOT

TheBeast · 21/07/2010 17:51

So, a 16-year-old girl having sex with a 15-year-old boy should go to jail for 10 years? Or are we sexist on this forum?

What about a 15-year-old boy having sex with a 15-year-old girl? Both go to jail?

Booboobedoo · 21/07/2010 17:52

YABU.

And scary.

cestlavie · 21/07/2010 17:54

16/17 year olds having sex with 15 year olds being sent down for 10 years. We're going to need a lot more prisons... least it should solve the youth unemployment problem - they'll all be doing time!

Oh, YABU and possibly a little mad

5inthebed · 21/07/2010 17:57

Op, I can see where you are coming from, they should be locked away from the public for the rst of their lives, or until they re no longer deemed a threat.

But where do you draw the line? How do prison wardens/phychologists know tht tht person isn't going to offend again?

SomeGuy · 21/07/2010 17:59

i think people who rant on about paedophiles should be locked up, as their bonkers rantings create an atmosphere of fear and terror

Itsjustafleshwound · 21/07/2010 18:00

Why? - Because I like to believe that I live in a country which doesn't throw the human rights of criminals out the window. Regardless of the behaviour, you cannot go around murdering people you think 'deserve it'. If you want to live in a country like this, I suggest a one way ticket to Tehran ...

carriedababi · 21/07/2010 18:01

i knew alot of people wouldn't agree with me as people in rl tell my views are out of order.

but not one person can convince me, why they should be given a 2nd chance to do it again.
noone in rl has convinced me i thought maybe someone on here could make me see the light as such to the average thinking on the matter

ILovePlayingDarts · 21/07/2010 18:02

Chemical castration doesn't remove the sex drive, it simply removes the ability to DO anything about that sex drive, and there have been some worries about releasing paedophiles who are chemically castrated, as the medication needs to be taken regularly. Would you trust someone to take the medication?

TheBeast · 21/07/2010 18:04

You're not convinced? There's a surprise.

Thistledew · 21/07/2010 18:06

How about you convince us carrie?

How would you justify killing a 17 year old in a loving and stable relationship with a 15 year old if they decide not to wait the next day until her birthday before they have sex?

Let us know your thinking, and we might be able to relate it to ours.

ShesEverSoFamous · 21/07/2010 18:06

YABU, what about people lying about their age? I've seen it happen to a friend, she told him she was 17 and she was really 15. Her parents phoned the police but she wouldn't press charges, what would have happened if she had?
Some young girls do lie, I know my sister would never lie about her age but she is 13 and looks about 17.

thesunshinesbrightly · 21/07/2010 18:08

Yep i'm in favour for the injection!!

MillyR · 21/07/2010 18:08

OP, I don't want my children to live in a society that sanctions murder.

In order to live in such a society, I am prepared to accept the existence of predatory paedophiles and the risks that comes with that.

You either want to live in a less violent world and accept some risks, or you don't.
