Rapists who were chemically castrated in the US went on to sexually assault people with implements instead. So I can't see that it will work with paedophiles.

carrie, it's not our job to convince you. Because what you want it is a guarantee that any system can control the fallability of human behaviour or its remit encompass its myriad manifestations. Where human behaviour is concerned, you will never find that.

You can find reason and logic and statistics and civilisation though and what you have to do is try and trust in that.

It's very difficult to separate your anger towards the crime from the debate surrounding it. I appreciate that.

OP you are talking rubbish about the teenage sex scenarios in my opinion and obviously dont have teenagers - I suspect you will amend your view when/if you do.

Regarding paedophiles. The actual, proper type who desire children almost as a sexual preference, for want of a better description, and who have gone on to abuse children to fulfil that desire - a lifetime of custody would, if nothing else, make the world a safer place for children so on that basis I dont disagree, though I acknowledge that there are logistical problems with that due to lack of facilities etc.

I dont agree with lethal injections for anyone. Particularly as a punishment...its giving them the easiest and most peaceful death ever (I'm assuming its like having a general anaesthetic and never waking up). Even a terminally ill person who gives their consent doesn't have that right in this country.

A paedophile is an adult who is sexually attracted to children.

Child abuse is the abuse of a child.

Actually, I do agree with lethal injections for the terminally ill who request it but that's another debate.

as a victim of sexual assult when i was just 2 years old i am going to say there yabu. there is always a grey area.

my 'attacker' was just 15 years old himself, i knew him very well. what people didnt know was that he was being abused and was too scared to say anything. he acted out and abused me, but being a chatter box and never listening when anyone said 'dont tell mummy or daddy' i went to my mum and told her what had happened.

the police were called, he was arrested and questioned, where it came out what was happening to him.

he was just 15 and had been being abused since he was 5 years old.

i still have contact with this person now, he is a good person who just needed help.

Child abuse is a general term used for any abuse to children, whether physical or emotional.

Paedophilia is specifically where an adult engages in sexual activity with a minor.

If you are a paedophile, you are also a child abuser, but being a child abuser, does not necessarily mean you are a paedophile.

and just to clarify the man in my situation although technically not a pedophille, had been given that label, at the time it all came out.

maresedotes: paedophiles are people who are sexually attracted to children, not necessarily child abusers. In fact, they are very likely to have been abused as children themselves. If they do not act on this desire, then they are not child-abusers. They are to pitied imo, not condemned.

Child-abusers may or may not be paedophiles. In other words, they may have always been sexually attracted to children, or they may just be rapists who target children because they are weak.

Paedophilia is also erroneously used to describe what people are talking about above (the 18yr old and the 15yr old). Etymologically and legally I think it's prepubescent children that are implicated.

just found out recentley that someone we grew up with has sexually abused over 20 children.
he seemed like a totally normal bloke, hes young, not ugly, just seemed nice and normal.

Never knew about medication being needed to. I do think something more needs to be done as I think some of the sentences doled out for horrendous crimes are nothing more than a slap on a wrist, but I don't really know what should be done.

As for 16/17 year olds serving 10 years for sex with a 15 year old. Blimey, we would be locking up half the teenage population.

It is quite hard enough now for a child to confide in someone that they have been abused, especially if it is someone close to them. How much harder do you think it would make it if they knew their abuser would be killed?

What about wrongful convictions?

Why is it worse to sexually abuse a child than to, for example, stub cigarettes out on them, beat them and starve them to death? Or sexually abuse an adult with learning difficulties? Or traffic women and force them into prostitution? Or are you going to be killing an awful lot of people?

well perhaps the lethal injection is going a bit too far, incase of wrongful cases/mistakes.
and really it's too much of an easy option for the abuser.

I never think it is right to take a human life or to perform any invasive proceedure on anyone.

I totally believe in rehabilitation and I say that as a victim of sexual abuse as a child.

Child abuse is horrific and absolutely, utterly, categorically wrong. But it must also be pretty hellish to be attracted to children, and many people who abuse children were themselves abused. It doesn't excuse them one bit if they hurt anyone, but you can't judge someone before they've acted.
