been having lessons for months now and decided to get one put in at home!

its amazing for fitness and so much fun, i have really toned up since doing it and i am thinking of possibly teaching it from home if i get good enough. and dp enjoys watching me practise although i reckon the novelty will probably wear off soon

my mum did a bit of a "cats bums mouth" when she first saw it though and dp darent even tell his mum i have got one! haha

"Whether you have any problem with prostitution, exhibition, whatever, is completely up to you, but you cannot dispute that doing pole dances for money for strangers is still selling your body."

And there are places where a ballet dancer or a clothing model would be considered a prostitute for using her body to make money.

There is a vast difference. Pole dancers work in licensed premises, controlled by the local authority, looked after by on-site security, for themselves, not a pimp and are never physically touched by the patrons (something clubs enforce for the sake of their licenses).

You don't have to like it, support it or appreciate it, but don't try an lump all things you morally object to in the same basket.

toccatanfudge · 18/07/2010 15:23

did the Tango really come from the brothels of Argentina??

NotHereThanks · 18/07/2010 15:31

It's cool but only if you have a red brick bar and a large wagon wheel in your living room too.

Tasteless shite.

thelunar66 · 18/07/2010 15:40

toccatanfudge - yes... Argentine Tango orginated in the brothels of Argentina. Although apparently the men did used to actually dance with each other for practice, as there were not enough women around.

toccatanfudge · 18/07/2010 15:40

to get back to the topic - for gawds sake make sure it's more secure than this one - christ I thought it was going to fall over!

Well not quite 'originate' as such... looks like they used brothels to practice the dancing as not enough women partners available.

toccatanfudge · 18/07/2010 15:44

get you've never seen pole dancing like this though - omg - he must have padding round his nuts otherwise they'd be bruised to hell

toccatanfudge · 18/07/2010 16:00

look OP just call it a chinese pole and dance/exercise around it and you'll be fine

PuppyMonkey · 18/07/2010 16:10

My niece has one in her living room, she's 25. She posts pics of her and her mates on it on facebook which I think is the tackiest thing ever.

AnyFucker · 18/07/2010 16:25

eww, PM

she should know better at 25, tbh

silly cahhhhh (no offence ), not dissin' your faahhhhmlee

sallyseton · 18/07/2010 17:01

Of course it's her choice. But she has asked if she's being unreasonable, and I think she is being. I, and I'm sure a lot of others, would not voice this opinion if we knew someone who had one in rl.

The act of owning a poledancing pole doesn't equate to thickness. However, there has been a wider cultural change in the last few decades of women conforming to degrading and objectifying standards of behaviour- read 'living dolls' by natasha walter. It is a flawed book, but she has some good points. She describes going to an event in a nightclub put on by a lads mag, where young women parade suggestively on stage for the chance to appear topless in a magazine. The winner is decided by the level of cheers she receives. Is it these women's choice to participate? Of course. But I dont think anyone could argue that it is extremely misogynistic and degrading. Why do these women participate in events like these, or have breast implants, or hypersexualise themselves? Because it seems like their only route to success. Because their sense of self worth depends on the male gaze. The women who go down this route generally have fewer options open to them in life.

Feminism is not about the choice to dance around a pole. It is about equality. It is about changing cultural norms that are unequal and keep women down. I'm sure there were a lot of men who would have liked to see women swinging around on poles in the 1940's, but the social norms of the day prohibited this. Nowadays, after the sexual revolution, it can happen- does that make it somehow empowering?no, it bloody doesn't.

Every woman deserves empathy, respect and equality. So does every man, come to that. I am angry at the society that has degraded women, not the women themselves.

toccatanfudge · 18/07/2010 17:13

I guess the way to equality is to learn to do the Chinese pole moves instead (and maybe then transfer onto the shorter pole?)

superv1xen · 18/07/2010 18:28

toccatanfudge - OMG at the chinese pole dancing guy!!!!

Excellent post sallyseton.

Hmm
AnyFucker · 18/07/2010 18:58

sally...good post x

Mumcentreplus · 18/07/2010 19:07

Tis totally naff..like a fake erupting volcano made of cherry coke and pop rocks exploding on the hour!...plus more but I'm sure its been said....

PosieParker · 18/07/2010 19:32

Just checking: The general consensus is that breast implants are misogynist, then? Only I have considered it as, since having four dcs, my breasts are somewhat lesser. Seems to me the question is: Am I socially programmed, and therefore conforming to male attitudes, to want younger, fuller and larger breasts or do I just want my old ones back?

Totally agree about objectification of women, almost 'if you beat 'em join 'em'.

AnyFucker · 18/07/2010 19:42

I dunno about breast implants being misogynist

They are naff though (IMHO)

If your tits are seriously bad (like mine are, after 2 kids and ballooning from a 34B to a 36HH with each pg ), then I might consider having them lifted...but implants ? No

Do you have them, PP ?

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/07/2010 19:45

i really think this is overthinking the issue! do whatever makes you happy as long as its not hurting anyone else. that goes for breast implants and poles in living rooms.

im slightly in awe of the upper body strength it takes, having just spent 6 months in a gym trying to develop upper body strength for a fitness test.

maybe i should have tried pole dancing first! (not really!)

PosieParker · 18/07/2010 20:31

No, not yet...my mother has had fabulous eye surgery, she had her bags and bit under the eyebrow removed (well not completely) and she looks so much better. So I would have breast implants, not huge as I only had 'b/c' cups before but then I had a 22" waist. I would only do it if I could afford very good surgery and it was thoughtfully done.

FanjolinaJolie · 18/07/2010 20:38

My SIL has one in her living room.

Just lovely, seeing the DN's baby pictures with stripper pole in the background.

It's really tacky and I wish she would get rid of it, I expect she's hanging on to the memories of her crazy single days.

upahill · 18/07/2010 20:41

Ok Ok Let me ask a question.

Me and a mate are thinking of taking a course of 6 pole lessons. Not for titilation or to increase our sexual prowess. I want to do because I'm in awe of the moves that can be made and I want to try something new. It is simply fascinating. I was seriously impressed by the youtube by toctanfudge!

So by having 6 lessons prancing round a pole for my own fun a bad thing?

FellatioNelson · 18/07/2010 20:44

I might have fabulous eye surgery too, one day. I don't think I'd go for the full face lift though, as although people undoubtedly look better/younger in some respects, they look decidedly odd in others. We have become accustomed to 'the look' so we don't say 'My God, doesn't she look great', we say 'Look at her - she's has surgery.' I have genetically very heavy lidded/droopy eyes though, so the thought of a brow lift and bag removal appeals.

Also would consider a boob lift but never implants. The thought of being 84 with perky rock hard tits is appalling. The trouble with all these things, is that done well they are fantastic, but they have become so ubiquitous amongst people with no taste and style that nothing is subtle - everything is pumped up and chiselled down beyond reason, and all these women have ended up looking identikit, and faintly trashy.

littlesez · 18/07/2010 21:41

I personally wouldn't have a pole in my front room, but each to their own. If/When your children are old enough to understand they will probably think yabu

But as for pole classes YANBU

I do not like that women pole dance in strip clubs in underwear and heels, and find that very sad. However going to pole dancing classes for fitness is not the same thing IMO.

I did 2 pole courses (pre-baby) and really loved it. It was in a sports centre, with no men around at all and dressed in our fitness gear. It was such good fun, no slutty moves or fanjo flashing! no sliding up and down as if it were a giant cock, although bean bags at the bottom would have come in very handy for the couple of bumps I had It was really great for fitness and much prefered to do that than go to the gym (yawn)

I can understand having a pole at home because the classes are bloody extortionate! but wouldn't do it myself.
