to think excess baggage charges are insane when you look at the size of some passengers?!?!?

Am sure I'll be flamed for this but......

I was charged for 1kg of excess baggage the other day. 1 fucking Kilo!! Isn't it about time airlines started weighing passengers and their luggage together and then charging excess weight rather than jusy excess baggage?!?!?

LOL, Grace. There is a Pirate Day?

seenyertoeslately · 18/07/2010 03:59

I though pirates travelled by boat, not plane.

ragged · 18/07/2010 05:11

I sort of agree with OP, but the obvious way to do it is to do it is by volume; if your bum is too big (fat around) to sit entirely within a standard seat you must buy a 2nd seat (or pay for upgrade to bigger seat). And otherwise treat luggage allowances as a separate matter.

It's not fattist, it's just asking people to take responsibility for themselves and their own needs (being wedged into a too-small seat is unpleasant and most pose its own extra safety risks).

If everybody knew those were the rules we'd all shrug and get on with it.

HonestyBox · 18/07/2010 05:53

How big does your bum have to be to not fit the seat? I wonder what percentage of people would have to actually book another seat? Does anyone know someone who has had to do this? In terms of weight of passengers, I guess the airlines have already figured into their fares the differing sizes of passengers and expect a spread of weights. Weight of luggage is rightly the same for everyone.

ragged · 18/07/2010 13:33

This article estimates that up to a third of British women and ~20% of the men are too big to fit comfortably and safely into economy airline seats .

ItsGraceActually · 18/07/2010 13:55

Indeed there is a pirate day www.yarr.org.uk/ - 63 days to go, me hearties. You can set your facebook language to English (Pirate), did you know?

Anyway - I'm sorry fer hornswagglin' yer vessel, mateys, I be off afore ye keelhaul me!

Rocklover · 18/07/2010 16:57

I better find out when the OP is flying and not get on the same flight. She'd be disgusted at me being a size 16 and weighing more than 10st 3.5 lbs.

In fact, why not put all us larger people in an underground bunker somewhere and feed us gruel so that we're no longer a drain on society!

Yes I have been on diets and lost weight many a time and no it's not always easy. You're the type of judgey person I will make bloody sure my kids DON'T turn into.

bumpsoon · 18/07/2010 17:50

Im fat and would be happy to be weighed at check in as long as they did it weightwatchers style with a little screen ,and then the check in girls and boys could be dual trained and do a bit of lipo if you come in too heavy

agedknees · 18/07/2010 18:10

I just put all my luggage on the back of my broomstick.

Works for me.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/07/2010 18:20

I'll join you in the bunker, Rocklover - and I am waayyy bigger than you, so you'll look positively sylph-like beside me.

Ewe · 18/07/2010 18:31

This is just a stupid argument.

Luggage weight and passenger weight aren't comparable. A passenger takes up one seat (usually) and pays for one seat. Luggage is an entirely different matter, you're given an allowance of 20kg which is pretty high in my opinion and can then pay to take more luggage or skis, bikes, golf clubs etc.

Luggage is extra work and will incur costs to the airline and an element of risk, there are people lifting these bags, 20kg is judged to be reasonable limit and I am sure from a H&S perspective the risk of injury to the worker increases as the weight of baggage does. These sorts of concerns simply don't exist when it comes to passenger weight.
