to think excess baggage charges are insane when you look at the size of some passengers?!?!?

Am sure I'll be flamed for this but......

I was charged for 1kg of excess baggage the other day. 1 fucking Kilo!! Isn't it about time airlines started weighing passengers and their luggage together and then charging excess weight rather than jusy excess baggage?!?!?

How much should we charge this bloke for his fabulous facial hair I wonder?

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 13:04

only if your combined luggage and bodyweight is over the average weight and 20kg luggage.

"it wouldn't just be fat people that got charged more, but tall slim people too"

Exactly! A tall slim person would weigh similar to a short fat person.

TigerFeet · 16/07/2010 13:04

If I didn't pluck my eyebrows I would resemble this man, good job I do or I could be charged for those too

Cadmum · 16/07/2010 13:06

I just had an interesting conversation with dh about this very topic. He is on his way back home and did manage to sweet talk his way out of paying for the extra 2kg that he has packed.

I understand that these rules are created to prevent people from going to extremes but does seem a bit ridiculous in the case of 1kg.

None of my dcs weigh anywhere near the same as an adult but even my dd2, who is only 14 kg, needs to pay full fare for a ticket so it so it does seem preposterous for the airline to levy an excess baggage charge for anyone in our family.

I know that weighing passengers is never going to happen but I am certainly relieved that most check in staff seem able to use their discretion when charging extra money. Sorry that you were charged this time justshagging

TigerFeet · 16/07/2010 13:07

That lass that was on masterchef, she'd have to pay a fortune for her beehive

scurryfunge · 16/07/2010 13:08

justshagging....did you raise this argument at check in? Maybe that's why they wouldn't let you off.

GeekOfTheWeek · 16/07/2010 13:09

Can we please stop giving ryanair ideas

Those with abnormally large bodyparts or excess body hair could be charged too.

Really though, to make it fair they should have bmi calculators at the check in desk.

"In the UK, a woman's average weight is 10 stone 3.5 lbs (65 kg)"

I have been on flights where they do just this weigh the luggage and the person (in central america on a very small but commercial plane) and charge more if you are larger... so don't say it will never happen. (I'm on the small size so it was fine for me).

OrmRenewed · 16/07/2010 13:11

Well in that case I am above average but my BMI is 21.9. So not overweight. As I say tall and reasonable slim.

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 13:11

scurryfunge.... I didn;t, I thought it would be safer to raise it on MN!!!

OP posts:
toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 13:13

so - I could have a huge luggage allowance then as I'm a light shortarse.............that'd really piss GetOrfMoiLand (sorry Get - you're post just happens to be above where I'l writing) wouldn't it as I take substantially more stuff than her.

Mind - I guess my children may get a smaller allowance as they're all strapping, top of the centiles lads..........

MmeLindt · 16/07/2010 13:13

No way is the UK average 65kg.

And YABVU and rather offensive.

Penthesileia · 16/07/2010 13:13

Don't be mad.

There has to be some measure to control the amount people attempt to bring onto a plane because there is limited room in the cabin and hold; and heavier planes consume more fuel which is expensive for the airline.

Obviously, low cost airlines take advantage of this, which is galling. And it is irritating if just cross the point at which excess is charged.

However, your point about the overweight. Sigh. Think about it...

Who decides what constitutes "overweight"? Will you have to fill in your height and weight when buying tickets, so that some kind of BMI calculator determines by how many kilos you exceed the "norm"?

What about the underweight, and children? Should they receive a refund, even though they take up a whole seat to themselves?

It's unworkable. Though I think you know this, and I am rolling my eyes at myself for even bothering to type all this out in reply...

OrmRenewed · 16/07/2010 13:14

Dh has no hair so I guess he could use that extra allowance to carry some of my baggage. Hurrah! Swings and roundabouts.

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 13:14

wow - average weight 10st............

does that mean that as I'm only about 8 stone I get to pay less????

Penthesileia · 16/07/2010 13:15

Basically, you are being fattist. Which, like it or not, is a kind of bigotry. So, YABU.

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 13:15

actually I'm an "below average weight" shortarse that usually travels extremely light...........I hope I'd get a big refund as I'd sure I'd be way under the combined weight allowance!

SirBoobAlot · 16/07/2010 13:16

Sorry, but this is such an absurd suggestion it made me laugh

OP have a and chill.

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 13:17

average weight of a UK woman I was pretty surprised too - the press have us thinking we're becoming a nation of fatties overweight people

OP posts:
TigerFeet · 16/07/2010 13:18

I wonder if people travelling on business claiming the flight costs on expenses would not be able to claim back the excess beer gut weight charges?

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 13:18

hmm - well I don't know many women who are only 5ft 4 either.........I'm 5ft and most tower over me, and most of the teenage girls from our church are close to (or even over!) 6ft!

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 13:18

can't have a it might put me over average weight and I want to be careful just in case RyanAir take up my suggestion!!!

OP posts:
sapphireblue · 16/07/2010 13:21
