to think excess baggage charges are insane when you look at the size of some passengers?!?!?

Am sure I'll be flamed for this but......

I was charged for 1kg of excess baggage the other day. 1 fucking Kilo!! Isn't it about time airlines started weighing passengers and their luggage together and then charging excess weight rather than jusy excess baggage?!?!?

Careful IFancy - you're being fattist!

however, they should have been charged!

Actually, in the olden days of air, passengers were weighed, and if they were too fat, they were not allowed on.

Airlines have to make very exact calculations about the weight a plane is loaded with in order to work out how much fuel it needs. An increase in the average weight of passengers has genuinely led to an increase in the fuel needed. Sorry if this offends anyone, but unfortunately physics is physics.

And indeed, overweight passengers may have contributed to an air crash:

My parents were put sitting beside a morbidly obese woman once on a flight from New York to Dublin (aprox 5 hrs). She was spilling over into one of their seats and they couldn't even get up to go to the loo because it would have been so difficult to get past her. The air hostess gave them a free glass of wine each as an apology, but the whole situation was very unfair and she shouldn't have been allowed on the flight.

mrsgordonfreeman · 16/07/2010 15:21

BTW, I don't think that airlines particularly care if the extra weight is muscle, height or fat.

We're all just annoying, noisy, fidgety cargo to them.

IFancyKevinELevin · 16/07/2010 15:21

Should they? Or should airline companies stop making Victorian people sized seats and charging extra premiums just to feel the blood flow in your legs! if you want to reserve the aisle row for long legs on a lot of flights it's around £75 per flight!

I'm a size 14-16 (after being a size 22 year before last so I sympathised with the ladies they were awfully embarrassed) which is supposed to be the average UK woman, and I have to suck my gut in to show the hawk-eye stewards that my seat belt is done up.

They aren't comfortable for the majority I feel...

posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:23

shortarse is offensive.....fucking hell can you imagine if I said that an obese lady on a plane , using more fuel, was a lard arse/fat arse?

IFancyKevinELevin · 16/07/2010 15:25

Perhaps it would be taken tongue in cheek posie as I think that's how the poster meant it TBH.

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:26

Posie - I think you'd have to leave MN forever and possibly also never show your face in public either!!

OP posts:
posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:29

I've never had a problem with my height, taller than Kylie (used to have her figure only with breasts!!), shorter than Madonna but do get a bit shorty shirty when people have a go at fattist comments and then say something belittling (can a girl not use a pun?) about another physical attribute.

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:29

oh - I never realised it was offensive

posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:32

Anything followed by arse is generally not nice!! except nice arse/great arse!!

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:34

well I'm a shortarse and proud of it

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:34

very envious of your figure Posie...... and your way with words!!

OP posts:
posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:37

Just....now four c sections later I cannot be compared and the breasts have buggered off to past it land, too. Although if I run past the mirror on a dark night I do pretend!!

posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:38

When I met my DH he could fit his hands around my waist!!

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:39

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:40

mind - I didn't have any norks back then - I do now though - my children did at least do one thing for my figures

loopyloops · 16/07/2010 15:40

YABU - Surely fat people need more baggage as they have bigger clothes?

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:42

:D

Got to stop thinking back......

before dc1...6 1/2stone, day before 12 1/2 stone.....OMG!!!

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:45

hehe - I know that feeling - I put on 5st with DS1 as well.

Mind looking back at photos of me pre-chilren I don't actually look that great..........I look very skinny and boney and horrid (gawd knows why I drank like a fish and gorged on pizza most nights LOL)

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 16/07/2010 15:46

I found your OP upsetting and offensive, JustShagging. I'm glad you found it easy to lose weight - I have struggled with it for years, alongside struggling with depression and low self-esteem.

I was feeling good, because I'd just got back from the gym (third time this week) but now I am wondering if I should bother at all, because the world is clearly full of people who would rather I didn't exist at all.

Now that I could manage quite easily.

posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:48

Staying, that's very unfair.

posieparker · 16/07/2010 15:50

Toc...I know what you mean, at my lowest I was five and three quarter stone, my very small ears stuck out, eyes popped out too and I permanently looked like I was on ecstasy.... still worried about being in a bikini, had a six pack too!!! Also had cancer scares because I had nightsweats and shakes (der due to hunger!!)

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:52

Staying

Well done for 3 trips to the gym this week. Really impressive. This thread was absolutely not meant to be anti overweight people, just laughing at the ridiculousness of paying 1kg excess baggage when if I;d weighted 1kg more I wouoldn't have been charged. It seems that a few people have taken this the wrong way.

nowhere in this thread does it say that you (or anybody else for that matter) shouldn't exist at all.
