to think excess baggage charges are insane when you look at the size of some passengers?!?!?

Am sure I'll be flamed for this but......

I was charged for 1kg of excess baggage the other day. 1 fucking Kilo!! Isn't it about time airlines started weighing passengers and their luggage together and then charging excess weight rather than jusy excess baggage?!?!?

potoftea · 16/07/2010 14:34

I actually agree with youJustShaggingForNow in a lighthearted way though. I often think it would be a fairer way of charging.

The reason you pay more for extra baggage is because the extra weight costs more in fuel. So then obviously the heavier the passenger the more they cost the airline.

And its not about the airline judging whether you are overweight or not, or have a healthy bmi, its the idea that you and all your coats, baggage, handbag etc. stands on a scales and the total weight is counted. Would also mean that there'd no longer be a need to wear your heaviest clothes and stuff your pockets with heavy items.

It would actually be the fairest system, and would encourage me to loose weight before going on holidays.

potoftea · 16/07/2010 14:35

Not sure why my asterisks didn't work. Sorry

FakePlasticTrees · 16/07/2010 14:39

A friend of mine took a small plane for a flight in Africa on her year out, and in order to calculate the fuel required, everyone had to stand on scales holding all their baggage. She said it was rather upsetting for some of the larger members of the party. (and that she was very glad that she hadn't completely filled her big bag, so it looked like she had more baggage than she did )

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 14:41

thankyou potoftea finally someone gets my point. Think everybody else on here is just having a bit of a sense of humour failure this afternoon!!

Do I need to make it any more clear I'm not being fattist

OP posts:
JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 14:42

FindingMyMojo - seriously?!?!? Perhaps you should try FindingYourSenseOfHumour!!

OP posts:
OrmRenewed · 16/07/2010 14:43

Oh I don't think we are - I think most of the responses were humorous. But I don't think your OP was entirely. Was it?

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 14:46

Ok - not everybody on here but rather a few. There were some very funny responses but some were dreadfully serious!

Of course I know that there is no way anybody would implement the whole combined weight thing but excess baggage is damn irritating.

OP posts:
Mingg · 16/07/2010 14:48

How much extra did you pay for that 1kg?

FindingMyMojo · 16/07/2010 14:49

I'm with ORM.

Gotta great sense of humour thanks, but bigotry ain't funny. I don't believe you were trying to be funny in your OP. You were genuinely pissed off about your overweight charge (as most people are) and then you got all "fattist" & thought it would kick off a good rant. It didn't but many MN'ers gave very funny replies pointing out/laughing at the ridiculousness of your OP - they were funny, you weren't.

I am 6 foot. Does that mean i should pay more than shortarses?

Perhaps you should pay more for your mouth?

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 14:54

I said weight, not fat. Are you going to have a go at GetOrfMoiLand for being "shortist" too??

I am going to hazard a guess (and get shot down in flames no doubt) that those who got stroppy about it and decided I was "fattist" are overweight and sensetive about it.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 16/07/2010 14:54

What annoys me is the people who seem to get away with taking a massive bag on as handluggage and then take up all the overhead locker.

That is incredibly irritating!

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 14:58

well I think you're being fattist and I'm just over 8 stone, size 8 and 5ft tall.......

posieparker · 16/07/2010 14:59

I agree with you OP, even though you were joking....seems to me there's talk of getting rubbish weighed, perhaps we all should pay for what we use. And Getorf used an offence term not a descriptive word.

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:01

where did Getorf use an offence term

OrmRenewed · 16/07/2010 15:02

I think it was 'shortarse' but not sure....

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:03

FFS - I'm not being fattist. Did I or did I not mention the fact that I used to be overweight myself?!?!?

I was discussing weight. Muscle weights more than fat so how long before someone jumps in and accuses me of being "muscleist"!?!?!?

OP posts:
stubbornhubby · 16/07/2010 15:03

some airlines are making people who are too big for a seat occupy and pay for two seats.

toccatanfudge · 16/07/2010 15:06

oh.....................

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:06

stubbornhubby.... you just pulled the pin on a grenade with a very short fuse there - take cover!!!

It is true though that airlines are having problems accommodating their more cuddly passengers.

IFancyKevinELevin · 16/07/2010 15:12

How about this scenario then JustShagging:

We Flew Premium class to Cuba two years ago, having paid an extra £350 each for the premium cabin with wider seats etc etc. Half an hour into the flight two morbidly obese women (around 20 - 25 stone each) were moved into the Premium Class cabin, because they couldn't fit properly into the economy class seats.

I bet you'd have been spitting into your complimentary mixed nuts, wouldn't you!

JustShaggingForNow · 16/07/2010 15:13

LMAO at cuddly. Since when did MN become so PC?

OP posts:
IFancyKevinELevin · 16/07/2010 15:16

My pet hate is being slavish to the one bag, fits in the tester thingy rule, and then watching everyone else board the Easyjet flight with Haversack, wheelie case, handbag, laptop bag and dutyfree carrier.

I even got made to repack an emergency purchase of a box of tampax I had in a Boots carrier bag last week as it was excess luggage to the "one item rule" according to the sneering faced, orange fleeced harridan at the gate!
