Lots of lovely attitudes shown on the 'is breastfeeding a middle class thing' thread.

How smug can you get?

Hands up if you are working class and not a stupid, uneducated, druggie, selfish, malnourished and mindless waste of space.

Hmmm, difficult one.
I was definitely raised working class, but as I am now educated and have aspirations, a car and a house, I think that makes me middle class. Or am I still working class? In which case I raise my hand too.

Oh you can come in Eleanor. You are SO not a smug twat.

Honestly if people said 'these are the attitudes of Indians' against those statements on that thread, they would be hung.

But darling the plebs. They obviously don't understand the benefits of breastfeeding.

Sorry, thread about a thread, and what the hell am I doing on a breastfeeding thread anyway? My daughter is 14! But bollocks some of those comments are so offensive.

Ignorant cows. May they choke on their cupcakes/trip over their LK Bennett slingbacks/insert middle class cliche here.

I'm working class. I like drugs, but I can't afford them now and I have children so those days are behind me. I don't have a degree, but plenty of other qualifications inc. A levels and an NVQ and a GNVQ. I am going back to college in Sept now that DH has lost his job, to learn a trade, possibly fitness and nutrition. I am not selfish in the least. I love cooking, so no I wouldn't say I am malnourished. I know more about nutrition than dd1's school seem to . I work and have have two very bright, considerate children so I don't think I am a waste of space. Can I put my hand up?

Tortington · 13/07/2010 11:05

do pringles count as nourishment?

if so

those middleclasses with their altruistic paternalist outlook. the 'i'm so better than everyone else, but such a good person' POV. ooh i buy the bbig issue and give money to amnesty.

ooh im so poor i can only afford pasta to eat in the dining room of my 300k home. ( which is nothing in London doncha know, i might as well be poor.

i'm jesting obviously

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2010 11:06

I am a professional, have a masters degree, own my house, shop in Waitrose, but am still middle class.

Think it is an upbringing thing. I am as common as muck, no use pretending

OP posts:
DuelingFanjo · 13/07/2010 11:07

most people who claim they are working class aren't really anyway IMO.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2010 11:08

Bet none of them work, the lazy sods (incites riot with WOHM/SAHM slant)

OP posts:
ProfYaffle · 13/07/2010 11:08

There are lots of admirable features of working class culture, dismissal of all of it out of hand drives me mad. Should I not read the bf thread then?

dorie · 13/07/2010 11:09

What constitutes as Working Class?

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2010 11:09

Oh no read it ProYaffle. It is full of gems such as 'working class mums I have known don't want to breastfeed because they want to go out and take drugs of a Friday'

OP posts:
loopyloops · 13/07/2010 11:09

GOML did you mean working class? I'm really confused now!

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2010 11:10

Oh no I did mean working class as in lower classes, plebs, proles, NOT working mums.

OP posts:
Tortington · 13/07/2010 11:10

i think the true test is whether you say fuck in a sentence and no-one gives you a second look

"where's my fucking keys?"

"wehre the fuck did you leave 'em?"

whereas middle classes it would go
2 darling, have you seen my keys?"

"next to the stilton and fois gras darling"

UPPER Working Class! Upper. Sheeesh.

loopyloops · 13/07/2010 11:14

GOML I meant the above comment:

[ I am a professional, have a masters degree, own my house, shop in Waitrose, but am still middle class. ]

I'm sorry to say this, but I think that makes you middle class. I need to look up what the definitions are....

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/07/2010 11:14

Another definition of the working classes (from Jilly Cooper, bless her) is that the middle classes will save money for something concrete and sensible, such as a depoist on a house, or school fees.

Working classes will save money all year and spend it on a fantastic Christmas.

This is actually true of my family when growing up.

In truth, think will define it as people who (traditionally) had low paid menial jobs, always counting the pennies, no way of saving, being down trodden and exploited historically.

OP posts:
ShirleyKnot · 13/07/2010 11:14

When did being working class change into "Feckless scum"?

Time was when the working classes were appreciated for doing the shit jobs that no one in the middle classes could wanted to do.

Bestb411pm · 13/07/2010 11:15

@ Custardo Sounds about right to me!
