Is a waste of time? If people want to wear it then they will. Let them be!

Nobody gets to choose whether they're stared at or commented upon while in public. They can choose how they react if it happens, but they can't actually control the behaviour of other members of the public.

Jasonthunderpants · 21/07/2010 12:46

now I am the direct opposite. I walk round completly nude apart from some very dark sunglasses.
so you can see me but not my eyes,I have the same problem of nobody wants to interact with me

So a question for those who want it banned, is it because you are concerned for the women wearing the burkha? Or is it because it makes you uncomfortable in some way?

If it's the former, what do you think banning the burkha will actually achieve? Do you think that the ones being forced to wear it will suddenly be allowed to interact with others?

If it's the latter, do you think any clothing that makes people uncomfortable should be banned?

I'm not saying ban them, cos it would make it more popular! It's just bloody stupid.

I understand IT'S BLOODY STUPID! It's just a fashion thing at the moment, don't worry it will pass.

Go on bugger off then!

beertrickspotter Don't go, the rest of us are not trolls.

I don't think it would stop oppressive systems tbh, would be right behind it if it did! They just wouldn't let the women out where they could be seen, rather than giving them some freedom (and therefore, potentially, the ability to find help)

I know, currently having an influx of thunderflies and bluebottles through our flat - can't help feeling MN is having an equivalent problem.

I totally agree with you on the hypocrisy of it, wish there was an easy way to solve it. I guess the only thing we can do is leave as many ways of escape open to the women who are being mistreated because of it.

MrsC2010 · 21/07/2010 19:04

Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 made me laugh the other day, he was talking to a very typical Daily Mail reader who was objecting vociferously to the burkha because it made her feel uncomfortable, they all had 'steely eyes' and she knew they knew what she was thining etc etc. Anyway, he said that in that case he wanted flabby middle aged men stolling around the park in shorts and nowt else to be banned because they made him feel uncomfortable. She said that was ridiculous because there was nothing illegal about that outfit and we couldn't go around dictating what people could wear.

MrsC That's it exactly!

melikalikimaka · 21/07/2010 19:52

Ok, if we don't tow the line and agree with blah, blah, blah, we must be trolls. [have been looking this up, never heard off it]
