Anyone else stopping completely in 2020?

Drybird2020 · 30/12/2019 03:30

I don't mean moderating or cutting down, I know that I can't control my drinking this way and I need to stop.

I have stopped for periods of time before and enjoyed the peace of not thinking about alcohol, or stressing about my consumption, or negotiating with myself about whether or not to get a bottle of wine on the way home on a Wednesday night.
There's no point in doing dry January, because I will just use it to justify a wet February.

There used to be a series of threads for total abstinence, think it was in Relationships but it seems to have tailed off. I could really do with a place to talk about this, but with an emphasis on being dry, not moderate. And if nobody else is keen I can use it as somewhere to witter away to myself. Smile

Hey everyone just checking in and reading through all the updates, reading this keeps me motivated.

My stats are day 16, 53 units saved -£59 saved (and spent on junkfood) and 3742 calories. Although this is a rough estimate as some weeks I drank ALOT more than others and the money should be doubled for my OHs drink too.

Feeling good, I'm hoping to start eating better and exercising more soon but not yet as I'm still having wobbles now & again and wanting wine but the notion soon passes!

Just finished another thriller book called 'I looked away' by Jane Corry very good twist I read it in 2 days! Excellent read

Hope everyone has a nice evening,, tonight i am having my usual Pepsi max and some hot McCoy crisps Grin

Saltypotato · 16/01/2020 20:45

Hi ladies

I'm still here, just struck down with a bug the last few days. At least I haven't wanted to drink!

I'll catch up and check in tomorrow.

Hope everyone is still enjoying being AF xx

Canadeeio · 16/01/2020 21:06

Hi all, just checking in to say hello, after a bit of a wobble I'm now on day 6 (@Growingboys comment of borrowing tomorrow's happiness for today has just really resonated with me). Sleeping better than I've slept in years and although still feeling very tired it's like a 'good' tired rather than feeling exhausted. Also feel clear-headed which has been wonderful. I'm really thirsty though!

Spongeface · 16/01/2020 21:21

Must be something in the air... Or something about Thursdays. Am fed up and want a drink. I won't but I am fed up. £99.67(?!) Saved(must be more.. again was an average) Calories saved 50000000 calories eaten- even more. Times thought about having a drink - 7 or so since 4pm.
Not long in from work and have had 6 slices of toast thick with pate. I used to have wine and vodka for tea! Really having to mind my self of the point of this tonight. Carrying on. Well done everyone else. Wish we felt better.
Oh and you smooth operators!!! Jealous! I'm all bunged up!

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 07:02

Those stats (everyone's stats!) Sponge are fantastic. Well done. I'll post mine later.

WFH today but also have a ton of chores to do. Normally I'd be all hyped up as it's Friday, thinking about drinking later, but I'm not interested at all.

I've rediscovered bitter lemon and drinking lots of that. I'll be cruising the soft drinks aisle later, rock star that I am (not)!

Dr's later to see if they can give me something for my nose.

Happy Friday everyone!

TreesSandSea · 17/01/2020 07:26

Hi all! I lost you - busy week - and haven’t had time to read all the updates. Day 19 af today.
Now this is back on threads I’m on I will catch up later..

dottydolly72 · 17/01/2020 08:34

Morning all, amazing sleep last night! @Spongeface wow to those stats!! The weekend always brings thoughts of a tipple or 10 but I'm determined to stay strong.

Happy Friday all xx

HowlsMovingBungalow · 17/01/2020 08:45

Morning.

My AF app doesn't include calories ( thank feck! )
Day 25
Money saved £175
Hours I would've spent on drinking 125hrs ( total of 5 days)

Sorry to hear that some of you are struggling. It is good to remember HALT - Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired - all major itchy trigger points.

Boots20 · 17/01/2020 09:28

Happy friday everyone, here's to another sober weekend Brew

I've found a girl on youtube called 'Charlotte rose Coyle' she is 5 years sober I think and I find her videos very inspiring, she attended a rave and managed to have an amazing sober night dancing the night away and explains she has never felt more free in her life, I found her so relatable and inspiring.

I'm off to the gym now hope everyone has a great day, I'll be checking in over the weekend for motivation Grin

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 09:45

Quick stats update:

22 days AF.
54 units saved - this seems too low! I estimate closer to 90 so need to adjust my settings on the app.
£58 saved
3659 saved (this has to be more, because of all the crap I'd also eat!)

Happy Friday folks.

StillDumDeDumming · 17/01/2020 09:53

Just reporting in that daily boozer dp is day 4. This will definitely end tonight. But still it’s really lovely. I have a cold and lost my voice and I’m supposed to be leading a workshop at the weekend that involves singing. Off to mainline vocal zone!

StillDumDeDumming · 17/01/2020 09:56

Sorry also @Spongeface there is most definitely a point to this. And @Boots20 dancing sober is my favourite thing- it’s so much better than pissed dancing.

I have mythical weight loss. But I think this might be the cold!

Spongeface · 17/01/2020 10:46

Thanks everyone. Feeling better about it today. HALT is what I'm going to remember. Off for that stomp along the beach today after a smashing lie in.
It was a wibble wobble. Thanks for listening and understanding. Day 20 here.

asilikeit · 17/01/2020 13:18

I haven't been posting regularly but I still here! Today is day 16 and my app tells me I have saved £95 and 5402 calories which is a bonus! I'm trying to loose a stone and a half that I put on from October last year onwards - opening a bar is not good for anyone's waistline - coffee, cake and alcohol is very tempting when you are tired and stressed!
I can see a huge difference in my face and eyes - I'm so much less puffy and blotchy which is great.
The biggest hurdle I am finding is people telling me that I don't need to completely quit just moderate better - this is something though that I really don't feel like I can manage well at all. So at the moment I'm just staying dry as long as I can with the intention to keep going! I do feel so much better for it. However one of my close friends is staying with me on the 1st feb and that will be as hard weekend to navigate I think!
Keep going everyone!

Spongeface · 17/01/2020 14:06

Just got my first jigsaw for the weekend :)

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 14:16

Fist bumps Sponge. I love a jigsaw! I'm on my 5th since giving up.

I do them in the space between DS coming home from school and DS from work - when I would always normally drink.

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 14:16

DP from work I mean!

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 15:49

Result (of sorts)!

Went to Dr who has prescribed me antibiotic cream for my nose. Texted friend (pub lunch tmrw, I'd be panicking about what to tell her), said I might not feel like drinking/dr said best not. Hope she's not offended.

She replied of course not, no problem at all!

So first social hurdle handled!

Spongeface · 17/01/2020 16:34

Well done @housetornado! First obstacle jumped! So pleased for you what a lovely friend. Hope you do feel better.
Yes inspired by your jigsaws... Only problem is it is off jelly beans so I had to get some of those to eat with it.

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 17:23

Thanks, Sponge! I def feel better!

Jelly beans?! You're a jigsaw masochist!

winezero · 17/01/2020 18:11

The Naked Mind podcasts!

You MUST listen, especially if you're craving a drink tonight (Friday 🤦🏻‍♀️)

There are so many episodes, absolutely crammed full of information (I haven't read the book yet). Will certainly keep you motivated. Well done, everyone.

Saltypotato · 17/01/2020 18:33

Is anyone else bulk buying fevertree tonic?! I actually think its more expensive than alcohol... 🙈

HouseTornado · 17/01/2020 19:49

Thanks, winezero, will do.

Salty I don't like tonic, but I love bitter lemon. And ginger beer! The feverfew do look delicious, though!

I did buy myself a nice new mug today for my herbal teas! Woo!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 17/01/2020 20:03

I currently doing a bottle of fever tree a night too.

iamyourequal · 17/01/2020 20:43

Hi All. I’m on OJ & soda tonight but do love a nice Fevertree too, on the rocks. Friday nights aren’t the easiest, are they? I think I would actually be fine myself, but I’m aware I’m less chatty sober, so DH probably thinks he has a wife with nothing to say anymore. Will need to work on my sober conversation skills! It’s been a while...
