Morning all

I don't mind being outed tbh. My family don't mn (suspect sil may do but doubt she would be on this board and read enough individual posts to work out who I am), I don't think any of my friends do either though a few internet friends from old forums may recognize me.

Had 3 bottles of bud last night, the small 250ml ones so happy with that. Dh fell in at about 11.30pm. Very drunk but not buggy, passed out within minutes. Just made us bacon butties and he's gone for a little lie down 🤣🤣.

We are supposed to be doing stuff on the allotment today, can't see it happening tbh. I don't mind, want to deep clean the bathroom and do the ironing anyway.

I love hearing about different foods. Where I live you are lucky to see anything beyond the usual staples of Indian, Chinese or Italian. The thai restaurant is considered to be very cosmopolitan and exotic.

Am making a very traditional sunday dinner though. Roast chicken, Yorkshire puddings, roast carrots and parsnip, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and kale and cabbage and french beans from the plot. Then going to have a lovely soak in my deep cleaned bathroom, get my pjs on and finish my book.

I'm coming to yours for lunch, Frouby. Grin

Yes I tend to think we are among friends in this board. The thing that pisses me off is that anyone can advance search your username and find all the different threads you have commented on. That should be allowed imo but I started a thread in site stuff and no one else agreed with me. Am too lazy to faff about name changing though. I just hope I am not that interesting.

Well, who knew cold water was such a killer?! I shall switch to mulled wine at every meal and live forever!

Frouby we went to a great Eritrean restaurant in Sheffield at Easter. There's are a few of them close together near ponds forge. They don't look like much but ime the best restaurants look something akin to a crack den.

I'd love to hear more about your life Leaving. It sounds fascinating. And yours Dion. It's lovely to hear ds@ found his niche. Can I ask a random question. Does your dd go to a single sex school? Our nearest (state) secondary is single sex and I can't decide what I feel about it.

leavingAqaba · 15/09/2019 12:24

Eritrean longest? Interesting, what is it like? I'm guessing northern Ethiopian style perhaps with Italian element? I've been to Eritrea, a very long time ago. The only meal I really remember was fish cooked on the side of a road by Yemenis, they stuck it on the side of barrel shaped clay ovens. Bloody lovely. Yemenis run alot of restaurants in the middle east too, is it true of London? My biggest lesser known food like is Burmese, I cook it too once or twice a week. That's a bit hard to come by in the UK even in London. Apparently, it's because immigrants from Burma in the 40s and 50s had mainly medical backgrounds.

leavingAqaba · 15/09/2019 12:27

Single sex state schools? Honestly, I had no idea that was a thing.

Frouby · 15/09/2019 13:16

longest we rarely go to Sheffield these days, it's a good 40 mins away and we don't go out out very often at all. I need to invest in some new cook books for winter, I might look at something completely different.

Me and my friend often cook and we all stay in. She does starters and sides and puds, I do the main course. We are doing an Italian night next time, purely because I make an awesome lasagne and she wants some 😂. But might suggest something more random next time.

The best restaurant I have ever been to in Sheffield was at the bottom of the wicker, near the arches. It was an Indian cafe. Was very dubious when the then boyfriend took me. Literally like a greasy spoon cafe, where you got your own cutlery and stood and ordered at the counter, then they shouted you when it was done. The food was absolutely amazing, completely different to what you get from a normal takeaway or restaurant.

We are spoilt where we live, we have another amazing Indian restaurant 10 mins up the road, and a thai restaurant across the road plus various chain places. It makes going 40 mins away unappealing though we should.

Could maybe start getting the train in though, might suggest that to dh. Can get a lift to station then a taxi home I suppose.

Leaving, to my uneducated palate it seems quite similar to Ethiopian but I shall undergo further research. Not tried Yemeni cuisine but I shall now seek it out. Ditto Burmese, though yes, it's not one I have come across much.

Single sex state schools definitely a thing in London, for girls anyway. If I can get my head around it as a concept there are quite a few to choose from, whereas we are in a bit of a dead zone for decent mixed sex schools. It doesn't arise for a couple of years but trying to get my head around the options as I think you have to apply at the end of year 5.

Frouby, yeah, is hard to be bothered trekking far if you have decent things locally. There's a good Sri Lankan restaurant in Watford which is about 40 mins too and I have considered taking the girls but still not managed it as seems a bit of a weird journey to do.

leavingAqaba · 15/09/2019 13:56

longest I don't like injera, at least the type they serve in Ethiopia, then I found out that outside of Ethiopia they adjust it to western tastes and it's fine. Still prefer the sides and stews to the big grey sponge bread. My eldest is Ethiopian and we often used to take him when he was little. Sri Lankan is a bit too gratuitous chilli heat for me, likewise Thai sometimes.
I would feel weird about a single sex school just given that we all have to exist together as adults anyway in the end (I think it is more important to me than the academic advantages it can bring to girls or perhaps given I only have boys I'm trying to capture the girls as good influences) There are always a bunch of factors with schools that need to be weighed up, right?

Dionysa · 15/09/2019 13:56

Leaving, I think it varies depending on where you live. There aren't any ss state schools near me, but it would probably have saved me a fortune if there were!

Frouby, will lasagne survive in the post?

I have sent you a DM, Longest, as my school ramblings are so lengthy that I didn't want to inflict them on the rest of the thread!! I think my short reply would be my reply to Leaving. Grin

leavingAqaba · 15/09/2019 14:06

frouby save me a seat please. Love a Sunday roast.

Frouby · 15/09/2019 14:32

Seats saved for dion and leaving. I do make a lovely roast. And it's the only meal we usually all eat together which makes it even nicer.

I enjoy cooking, especially new things and stuff from different cuisines. Though the more I cook the more I realise how similar they all are. Most have a range of stews, a curry or spicy dish, seasonal veg dishes and then a variation of rice/pasta/potatoes/grains plus different breads. All seem to involve some kind of slow roasted meat or fish and all have soups somewhere in there.

Am debating a lamb tagine this week. With possibly a veg one for dd. Haven't had one for ages, dh isn't a massive fan but am fed up of pie and mash dishes.

leavingAqaba · 15/09/2019 15:31

Funny you should say that frouby, I was watching this programme about traditional cuisine of Corfu the other day. At one point I was yelling at the screen “that’s a bloody lasagne with the wrong pasta” Grin

Frouby · 15/09/2019 16:10

Lol it is leaving, have made greek lasagne before. I did a think layer of ragu, topped with cooked pasta shells, mixed with an eggy white sauce that set because of the eggs and then topped with cheese. Think it has something weird in it from memory, cinnamon maybe? Or perhaps nutmeg. Something warm and spicey anyway.

I only made it once, we weren't fans.

The problem with cooking dishes you aren't familiar with is you never really know what it's supposed to taste like. I used to make thai red curry having never really jad one apart from M and S ready meals and I was a bit meh about it. Then we moved here and started having regular thai food and now I love it and can do a really good red or green curry. Have yet to attempt pad thai but it's on my list of things to do.

Dh isn't that adventurous though, I usually have to butter him up with the promise of meat and potato pie one day, followed by something new the day after. And he is very much a meat and 2 veg man, with a curry on the weekend, followed by a sunday roast.

I ought to cook more veggie dishes for me and dd, she's getting more adventurous and not as fussy. And the poor neglected little bugger is so grateful if I cook a veggie dish she will eat anything. She has plenty of options she can cook for herself, I think it's just the fact she doesn't have to cook she likes.

^^ I want!!!!!

I think you sum it up, Frouby, with "I enjoy cooking". I bloody don't.

All are out tonight, so I am having a cheese toastie and gin

Flossie44 · 15/09/2019 18:16

Dinner looks amazing frouby!!

Hope you all ok.

I can now own up to why I had to delete a message the other day. I wrote a long post. A post explaining my dad was mega poorly in hospital having had a sudden cardiac event. He nearly died. Had 2 stents fitted as an emergency on Friday. I’ve been a mess!! It happened a day after dd needed her epipen at school!! Anyway...I wrote this, then realised my poor sister was in New York and my mum didn’t want her knowing!! She was on a mega important business trip. It was so hard as she’s my best friend and I tell her everything. I couldn’t tell her and had to lie when she text me how I was!! Anyway, she knows I’m on here so I had to get it deleted quick!!
She now knows!! So I’m back in the room!!

Will read back and be back here later x

Dionysa · 15/09/2019 18:38

Hugs, Flossie. xx

buckeejit · 15/09/2019 19:48

That looks yum! I'm also intrigued by the Burmese food. We have nothing good near us, an occasional pop up using local stuff. Last year I bought dh the Persiana cookbook for Christmas & it's Vg. Changed the way we cook rice forever! I would like to find another cookbook that gives fairly simple lovely flavoursome food.

I have been AF for 6 day's now! Minor miracle. I was dithering last night but decided it was too late to bother, however it's now Sunday, my favourite day for drinking & we have the first fire of the year on & id really like a glass or 2of red wine. Won't do it though as I would have to drink the whole bottle & am working tomorrow. Will be good for me to remove the association of fire & red wine though.

Booked a few days in London in Nov so lots of scheduling to do & deciding what lazy 6 yo dd can do with dh & fil while I take ds to Harry Potter world.

Dionysa · 15/09/2019 19:51

6 days. Bloody Hell. That would be a major miracle for me.

Waterandlemonjuice · 15/09/2019 19:59

Flossie I’m so sorry about your dad 💐

And Frouby about your MIL 💐

Buckeejit, 6 days is awesome

Waterandlemonjuice · 15/09/2019 20:03

Drank loads Friday Saturday and am drinking now. Finally took ds back to uni today, 5 hour round trip.

Dd is away so we are childfree !!!!! but only since 5pm. So far we’ve roasted a chicken, had a long chat and now I’m waiting for dh to join me in bed, woo hoo.

Aiming for 4 days AF this week, not sure if I’ll do it. Saw MIL yesterday and she seemed a bit better but, ultimately, she has organ failure so I’m not sure what will happen next, really hoping she recovers, I so love her.

buckeejit · 15/09/2019 22:28

Bloody hell @Flossie44 - hugs to you, that's stressful. Sorry my phone hadn't updated your post earlier. Hope things are getting better.

I'm aiming to do this week AF until Friday. Will need to drink next weekend or my tolerance will be too low for wine club the week after! Not too bothered if I crack after tomorrow though. Lots of early nights ahead for me.

When I start to think of the money we would save by drinking substantially less.... I did say a while ago I was going to give myself £2 spending money for every AF night. Might try to reinstate that & find something I want to aim for as a victory purchase!

longestlurkerever · 15/09/2019 23:20

Oh Flossie, i am sorry to read that. Sending hugs and the warmest of wishes. And to water re MIL.

Had nice day at friends' reunion party. Was pretty moderate and did not keep drinking when i got home so a minor win. Do feel horribly overweight looking at photos of the day though.

leavingAqaba · 16/09/2019 06:10

How stressful flossie sending you hugs. How is he doing now?
water is your MIL any better?

My DH loss his mum nearly 3 weeks ago, less than 24 hours after we arrived back home from Europe to put the kids back to school. I stayed here with the boys while he went for funeral and arrangements. DH has 4 siblings and they had a week together which I think was really useful for them. She was a complicated women.

buckeejit red wine and open fire, I wouldn't resist that. £2? At least a fiver surely??

Flossie44 · 16/09/2019 07:23

Water - ahhhh the feeling when you’ve dropped them at uni!! You miss them a tinsy but but the feeling of being you again is quite lovely too. Sounds like you had a lovely evening.
So sorry mil is so poorly. It’s really heartbreaking.

Buckeejit- I agree, deffo more than £2!! What’s your victory purchase going to be?

Longest - ahhh a reunion sounds lovely. I hate looking back at photos too. My arms seem to have take a life of their own!! I never knew you could get cellulite on bingo wings. Wtf

Frouby - you’re lamb tagine idea made me chuckle..the fact dh isn’t keen. We’ve now actually got an expression in this house called the ‘lamb tagine face’. I made one once. It was gorgeous. Did it in the slow cooker for hours. Dh is a steak and mash bloke but he agreed to try it!! Omfg he pulled so many faces while swallowing it, it was like I was forcing yellow penicillin medicine down his throat!! Pathetic!! Kids loved it but weirdly I’ve never made it again as felt I’d kill him if he did that to me again!!

Home last night after 9hr round trip to see my dad. Was so glad I did. He looked bright. But it’s deffo been a roller coaster of ups and downs!!
