Hiya

Just cannot contain myself and need to announce to the world! We've been trying for a family for over eight years, and FINALLY we will be meeting our lovely daughter (13 months old) tomorrow!!!!

Hooray!!!

I will finally be a mummy!

Oh, and I need a bit of confidential advice... I'm very lucky because DH was around to save the day, but I've been successfully avoiding pooey nappies until now

DH decided that today was the day for me to tackle one, so I gritted my teeth, decided to man up and go for it.

Oh. My. God. It was disgusting.... I managed to open the nappy up, and scraped some of the sticky poo off her with the nappy like I've been shown - but the smell was overpowering! I gagged and actually felt like I was going to throw up, tried to carry on, but then had to run away! DH sensibly took over, and finished the job, but I feel so guilty...

How am I going to cope with these? I'm thinking well-ventilated area (may even make sure the fan is on!)and hold breath before starting, but what else can I do? When DH goes back to work, I can't just drive her to his office for a bum change, can I?

I suppose you are at a small disadvantage, because newborn poo doesn't smell and gets smellier as they get older so you can build up an immunity.

Best advice would be do it as often as possible - the day will come where you even cup your hands for your DD to vomit in to without batting an eyelid!

Lionstar · 27/06/2010 16:49

LOL, you'll get used to it. And even proud of them in time (yes truely )

LadyBiscuit · 27/06/2010 16:53

Ahh what a lovely story - I also have filled eyes. You will get used to the poo. Honest

Lotkinsgonecurly · 27/06/2010 16:54

Just read the last 3 posts from you. Managed to cry at the frilly sock. I do hope you manage to last until Tuesday, but then she will be yours 24/7. Am nosey, have you got adoption leave sorted ? / Given up work for the moment?

Re the pooey nappies, you get used to it. Just grin and bear it.

Washables are actually easier and less smelly than disposables imo. But may leave that for a month or two!

FabIsGettingFit · 27/06/2010 16:56

You will get used to the nappies. Don't worry too much.

You are so lovely to share all this with us.

Enjoy.

pumpupthevolume · 27/06/2010 17:01

None of you are helping - I wanted there to be a magic way to not have to do the poo stuff. Good job I love this tiny girl!

Yes, on adoption leave for a year. Actually finished work a few weeks ago and am amazed at how meaningless and distant it feels already.

SportingDarkGlasses · 27/06/2010 17:14

You have to smile through the poo - that will help

No gagging or looking horrified is allowed

It gets easier - promise

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 27/06/2010 18:33

My dh would gag through a poo change where as because i did on the whole them all it just became a non issue - the more you do the less it will matter. DH used to just pull his t shirt over his mouth and nose and go very very quick. Good luck

itstooruddycold · 27/06/2010 20:27

Lol at the poop dilemma - I find what DS eats makes a difference, if he eats lots of good quality food, fruit and veg and meat then they don't smell bad at all but as I found out when we were on a camping holiday, the jarred food I gave him made him absolutely reek!! Like the worst rotten wheely bin I have ever smelt!!
So maybe she doesn't have a great diet yet....or maybe you just have to get used to cleaning up poo.
Good luck and I too want to say thank you for sharing this special time with us all on MN, I can't wait to get online at night and see what you three have been up to during the day! I see a book coming....

Italiangreyhound · 27/06/2010 20:27

pumpupthevolume thanks for updating us. Sorry for the confusion, I confuse myself at times! It is wonderful to read your news.

I second that. Pull the neck of your top up for thr first few but you WILL get used to it. And then one day they will come up to you and say 'mummy, biiiiig poo poo. Clever boy'. And you have to clap and cheer.!!

PlumBumMum · 28/06/2010 13:03

Ahhhh you are doing brilliant and bitterandtwisted is so right about you'll be surprised ath things you will be doing in no time at all.

In saying that I can't cope with another child with a big green boggie nose I gag automatically, gagging now thinking about it

trumpton · 28/06/2010 13:18

just for you

piprabbit · 28/06/2010 16:22

What you will soon realise is that your child's poo is endlessly fascinating. Soon you and your DH will be endlessly discussing colour, consistency and frequency as well as general stinkiness.
Is that a stomach bug, or too much fruit in her diet?
How many days can she go without pooing before you call the GP?
How many dirty nappies in a day is too many?
Why has it gone a funny red colour, is it blood? (phew just sucking on an inkstamp...)
Why has it got funny pea green lumps in? (phew just eaten a crayon...)
How on earth did she manage to squirt it so far up her back that it's in her hair AND on her socks?

And yes, these are all conversations I have really had.

Good Luck and enjoy every minute - before you know it you'll be potty training.

piprabbit · 28/06/2010 18:46

Meant to wish you and your family all the very best for tomorrow...

Italiangreyhound · 28/06/2010 19:16

Pumpupthevolume I hope you will get used to the poo, I think you do after time. I have an almost super human sense of smell, it is like a super hero power! But rather a curse than a blessing, I have to say! So I smell everything. I suggest to change her near an open door or window if you can for fresh air, but not one where she could fall out of course!

Pumpupthevolume do you mind if I jump in and ask Hester please (who I saw on this and on another thread), a question? Please can I ask, did you have a birth child when you adopted and how easy was that? Please tell me some things if you can on the positive adoption stories thread I just started, please, and if not, no worries.

Thanks

chaostrulyreigns · 28/06/2010 22:32

All I can say to you pumpup is:

Tamarra Tamarra I Love Ya Tamarra, You're Only A Day Away.................

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 29/06/2010 11:39

chaostrulyreigns · 29/06/2010 12:28

Let us know how it goes with moving day for the pumplet please - I am on tenterhooks waiting for another weep.

aspiegal · 29/06/2010 13:42

I too have been lurking (why am i such a sucker for threads which make me cry?!). I hope today goes absolutely fantastic. You definitely will never forget this day. Congratulations

RunforFun · 29/06/2010 13:54

What a lovely lovely story. You write so eloquently about this experience which is so personal to you but you are kindly sharing with us. Somebody said earlier you should write a book, so much more interesting than Joules or Tess imo.

Have a lovely lovely day today

and pop back later to let us know how you are getting on.

Much love
