So who has met a sleb properly, to speak to? and how did you meet them?

I suppose for me it's various Doctor Who personnel due to my peripheral involvement with the "franchise" - Sophie Aldred, who was lovely, and Tom Baker, who didn't disappoint as he was mad as cheese. (My mum also taught him French for a while.) And the luuuuurvely Nicola Bryant who has a dazzling smile!

I was in the company of Will Self for a while at a book do. He didn't really say anything I remember.

Mine aren't especially stellar, so I hope for more from you lot!! No glancing encounters - proper conversations only!

Ended up rather hazy towards the end.

I met Ben Shepherd at a wedding (does he count as a sleb?). He was lovely although I was very drunk. His wife had gorgeous shoes on.

Kate Garraway and I both had overtired and stroppy toddlers at a craft fair last christmas and had a "aren't they a nightmare" kind of very quick chat. She seemed nice and much thiner than she looks on telly. Nice jeans.

OMG, there is a GMTV theme going on here

Oh, and i met Jimmy Paige and Brian May at a charity do. They were both lovely and I had a normalish conversation about the young guitarists. DH just stood there with his mouth open (JP is a Go in his eyes).

Amanda Redgrave and Peter Firth made a film in our house when I was 10/11. They used the house as locations for 2 settings, the flat where Amanda was shagging her lover and teh small bedsit where Peter was shagging his.
Cue lots of wakling around in dressing gowns in high heat and odd 'noises' coming from the house while we had to play outside.
She was beaten up in teh film and they had to keep touching up her black eye in
our back garden (and the make up ladies gave us all really bad facial injuries) and Peter kept sliding my sister and I money to sneak off to get them all icecreams.
Really, really nice people, would come home from school and they would go out of their way to say hi and chat to us all.

stoppingat3 · 05/10/2009 21:00

My children go to school with Beatrice Mccartney so we "know" Paul to say hello to and general chat, He very friendly but does seem like he's switched "on" all the time.
Heather also seems nice but more reserved.

stoppingat3 · 05/10/2009 21:02

I've met Gordon Brown. We chatted about our children for a few minutes. This was at a drinks reception at Number 10.

Also met Matthew Wright at the launch of a photographic exhibition. I was introduced by a journo colleague. He let me run my fingers through his hair when I asked if it was real (it looked odd). Lovely guy.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/10/2009 21:06

And I met Vanessa Feltz in the lift at a hotel we were both staying at. She complimented me on how gorgeous DS1 was.

QwertyQueen · 05/10/2009 21:07

I met Richard and Judy - doing some design work for them... they were so lovely it was quite incredible!

What counts as a sleb anyway? Do politicians count? 'High profile' journos who are on TV and radio a lot?
Do any of you listen to the Today programme? One of their former presenters is on my pub quiz team. She used to do BBC 6 o'clock news too.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/10/2009 21:13

Ooh, how could I forget! I interviewed Tony Blair, me and one other reporter, for about 15 minutes.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 05/10/2009 21:20

I met Robert Plant in a pub in Hay-on-Wye two years ago. I didn't recognise him and when he came over to talk to us and mentioned he had been at a local music festival I asked him if he'd seen any good bands . . . .

He was, er, headlining!!!!!

He didn't seem to mind (I was mortified when one of my friends told me cos of course I recognised him straight away when she mentioned Led Zep - just didn't expect him to walk into a pub I was drinking in!) and came back to our hotel bar when we were kicked out of the pub - he bought us a couple of rounds of drinks and chatted to us for a couple of hours.

We were all far too cool to ask him about Led Zep!!

Monty100 · 05/10/2009 21:22

I met Bob Geldof in a restaurant about a year ago. I saw him inside. Me and family were out the front in the conservatory, there was no-one else there, to my astonishment BG was just leaving the restaurant and stopped and started chatting just sort of 'how are you?' He was really down to earth. I'm ashamed to say I went all girly and shy!

He is sooooo tall. Never realised before.

lucykate · 05/10/2009 21:26

thom york, radiohead. he is very good friends with a couple we know. dh has spent the evening in a pub with him. he also dj'd at a wedding we were at, played abba for me.

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2009 21:29

I had tea with Johnny Ball a couple of years ago.

We were both at a "Science Day" at a local high school. But compared to the fire service starting and puting out chip pan fires, and the local BBC radio station and their outside broadcast kit, no one was really that interested in me and my "Come and be a Civil Engineer, it's great" stall.

Anyway the main act of the day as it were, was Johnny Ball. The kids were completely unimpressed, and mostly too yound really to know who Zoe Ball is even. Me and all the thirty something teachers were just swoonimg around Johnny's feet. We all had a cuppa in the staffroom and Johnny and I talked about light bulbs.

Babysat for Charles Dance when I was a teenager. Obv not for him, for his child.

Whoooooooseyfruit · 05/10/2009 21:29

my very good friends dad is Colin from the Brittas Empire. He's lovely. He's really good mates with Lorraine Chase, haven't met her though.

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2009 21:34

Oh and my sister used to work for Diana Ross's husband and the office fax machine had Chris Bonnington's number in it (her boss, Arne Naess, was a mountaineer and pretty famous in his own field, although sister was employed in his shipping buisiness). Sister is a fashion plate , soul music luvvie, the rest of us (me and 2 DBs) do loads of outdoor sports. She was very impressed. She used to ring me up and swoon when Diana had been in the office!

TeamEdwardTango · 05/10/2009 21:35

Stoppingat3, I know Paul too! I went to school with his son James!

I spent a lovely half hour with Marti Pellow when he popped into the surf shop I was working in.

And recently had a stroll around a hotel's gardens with Mark Owen whilst our boys played together.

elvislives · 05/10/2009 21:37

I once dropped carrots on Barry Took (he used to do Points of View). Had quite a long chat with Boney M.

DS was in a panto with Toyah Wilcox. I was trying not to approach her but she yelled hello to me across the road.

I was in a panto with Brian Blessed. He is mad but really lovely.
