Does fanjo hair prevent swimming, MP? picturing poor lady swimmer being dragged underwater by the huge weight of her sodden pubic beard

abraid · 19/01/2009 08:43

I never understand why women want to shave off so much pubic hair unless they're prostitutes.

I trim mine with nail scissors, shave the bits that might show under a swimming costume. Job done.

I rather like the picture

but then I'm not massively offended by pubes.

SpongeBrainedHalfWit · 19/01/2009 08:53

abraid - that's rather offensive to suggest that women who remove all or most of their pubic hair are prostitutes or somehow 'loose' in morals.

Some feel it is cleaner to have no pubes, some prefer th elook, some prefer the feel. It's not rocket science. To berate someone for taking all or most of their hair off is as bad as berating them for leaving it to run free.

But in a changing room of a swimming pool you'll see 20 proper muffs

I don't get this idea that this is somehow odd

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 19/01/2009 09:13

I live in a muslim country. In all our parks we have a special section for women and children only. I always think of Mumsnet when I see a sign pointing to the Lady garden.

abraid · 19/01/2009 09:13

Shaved pubes originated in the sex industry/prostitution. Punters like shaved pubes because they remind them of prepubescent girls.

It's a reasonable question to ask why women who aren't in the sex industry why they feel the need to shave it all off. Men (ie, non-prostitute-using/porn-fixated) certainly never used to 'expect' women to do it.

I know a fair few single women who are not in a sexual relationship of any sort who remove all hair. It's not always about men.

SpongeBrainedHalfWit · 19/01/2009 09:23

Quite right, Reality

Ancient statues may not have pubic hair but the current fashion for shaved pubes comes from greater access to porn images rather than from people wandering around the British Museum and saying. 'That's interesting, that goddess has shaved her pubes. I'm going to try that at home'.

Seems most people are agreeing that the Madge photo is 'normal' - and there are only a few people (in fact one as far as I can see) who have pointedly said it was 'disgusting'. Glad to hear so many sane opinions.

I can remember how I gained the impression that hair on legs was wrong: boy at school teased me.

I can remember how I gained the idea that hair underarms was wrong: my sister's idiotic teengirl magazines.

I can remember how I gained the idea that a naturally bushy bush was wrong: Mumsnet.

In every case it was a foolish external pressure.

I'm moderately happy to epilate my legs -- because I don't like the hair there. But the rest stays.

FairyMum · 19/01/2009 10:42

I think its a much more beautiful photo than the recent ones I have seen of Madonna. And her hair is completely normal.

is it just me or does she have a moustache ?

she needs to wax that

petrovia · 19/01/2009 10:56

Crikey

This is horrifying - I read the first several posts and was amazed how badly some of us have been conditioned. She has a normal bush - as far as I know - I can't believe people are so affected by the media image of what we should look like that they have to gang up and say nasty things about another woman's pubic hair.

Let alone fuss about shaving off bits of their own. I mean the odd trim here and there to neaten it up is Ok but FGS what is the issue? It doesn't really matter surely?

Some of you ought to think long and hard about whom you are doing it for.

Fwiw I think I would laugh more at someone with a shaved fanny beause they had obviously succumbed to some kind of pressure to look that way, at great pain and/or expense.

I think shaved pubes are poncy and self conscious
