Female celebs we don't "get", part 2. Dita von Teese...

Following on from the Agyness Deyn thread, I'd like to know what other people think about Dita von Teese. I keep seeing pictures of her everywhere, and whenever I look closer, it seems like there's something wrong or missing with the picture. Has anyone else noticed anything strange about her that I could be picking up on?

The air brushing I would guess

PeriodicalCicada · 01/12/2008 21:45

LOL! I think she is beautiful - I have her Burlesque book and the pictures are just gorgeous. She does wear a corset permanently, so maybe her waist looks unusual in pictures?

Ronaldinhio · 01/12/2008 21:55

when she's actually interviewed I imagine that she was awkward and plain as a child and that a good backstory, fake breasticles and makeup have changed that

She is a miacle of modern makeup

decent business woman for exploiting a niche though

Are they fake? I have seen (ahem) quite a lot of her in RL, and they don't have the classically fake look... I love the burlesque style too.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 01/12/2008 22:28

yes they are fake bitoffun, on her admission

very good fakes, that was my point

WotsThatSkippy · 01/12/2008 22:29

I don't get her at all.

I don't get most female celebs, though.

trixymalixy · 01/12/2008 22:30

I think she's gorgeous!!

i think she is not the most typically beautifull woman but her style and her persona are stunning.

she has a confidence that cannot fail to be beautifull.

i wish i had an ounce of her self assurance and inner confidence i really do.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 01/12/2008 22:33

she is beautiful

BennyAndJoon · 01/12/2008 22:37

I am not sure she is beautiful

she is polished and always fully made up and all that - but that is her job - she has time for that.

she has a nice body, but is this another thing of the unobtainable ideal unless you eat one salad leaf a week and have a personal trainer?

WotsThatSkippy · 01/12/2008 22:38

Oh, I'll have to get my claws out, I do apologise. I see her as nothing more than a moderately attractive 30-something woman who strips for a living and calls it 'art'. It's all smoke and mirrors, that burlesque nonsense. I see sexier women on the school run.

Miaow.

Piffle · 01/12/2008 22:38

hrh
You do appear as summit very special my dear
Or should I say your eminence

I quite like DVT (?) for exploiting something rather than it exploiting her.
I'd not steal her style per se but think she carefully holds an image and is very professional.
And polite and not arrogant like most pointless slebs
Hiltons,
Lohan
Etc

Oh piff you do say the nicest things.

wintera · 01/12/2008 22:56

I quite like Dita Von Teese to be honest. I think she is very attractive and glamorous. I like that old fashioned glamour look! Its refeshing. Would much rather see pictures of her than some orange perma-tanned blonde nymphet any day.

glasjam · 01/12/2008 23:01

I think that burlesque is bandied about these days as a justifiable excuse for some tasteful "spreads" in the Sunday supplements. Granted there is something of an art in trying to hide your fanjo behind a fan, whilst on a trapeze, wearing nipple tassles - I don't dispute that it is titillating and if it floats your boat fine. I find it all a little false. I've seen DVT on This Morning and other innocuous daytime shows talking about the tease and good, old-fashioned glamour. I've also seen some of DVT's bondage stuff and Playboy bits - believe me, no fans involved.

Not saying that there is anything wrong with it at all - some of the images are truly striking. But all this pretence of it empowering women and how we could all do with cinching in our waists, layering on the red lipstick and putting on the tease makes me feel decidedly uncomfortable.

She looks damn fine in a dolly fashion in all the gear but God, "Hello?" is there a real, woman in there? I can't begin to imagine what her day-to-day relationship with Marilyn Manson must have been like? She can't have been baking cookies in the nude whilst wearing six-inch stilletoes every day could she?

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 01/12/2008 23:07

I agree glasjam

I am kind of neutral on the whole porn/lapdancing/stripping debate (so don't let's get onto that, you MN'ers ) but lets not be under any illusion that burlesque is not just a fancy kind of stripping
