Just posted on another thread about this, it's awful isn't it. It doesn't make me feel christmassy in any way, they would be better to let ChatGPT come up with something.

PressedThistle · Today 08:11

Thanks, I hate it. What did she even get them? A disco room? Confused

NobodyEvenCares · Today 08:15

Man I would kill for their marketing budget

SliceOfMammasPeachPie · Today 08:17

And she breaks something in an independent shop and runs off.

It is a horrible advert -
I hate that the kids are horrible (I genuinely don't know any that are allowed to behave like that)

I dislike that the parents are shown to be weak enablers

I dislike that it is a woman worrying about the presents (we hear a man saying lunch)

I dislike that it reinforces the idea that JL is for post rich older women.

And I really dislike that only money can make a relationship

Zoopet · Today 08:22

It's a shit advert.

TurboGirl2 · Today 08:27

Not a fan of this one at all .

Lookingforwardtospringnextyear · Today 09:18

I've not seen the advert and I' not clicking the link to watch it because I want to avoid it as long as possible.
This weekend I had the misfortune to see the Sainsbury's Christmas ad. It was long and boring the first time i saw it and now I've had the misfortune to see it several times it's excruciating.
I honestly don't see what good these Christmas ads do. Do they really have any good effect on sales? Because to me they just succeed in annoying people.

Skybluecoat · Today 09:26

What’s the actual present? The disco room is a temporary set up in Granny’s house…

TwitTwoodiniEscapeOwlogist · Today 10:09

Buy them things to make them love you. Not a great Christmas message at all. (and even that mercenary message didn't work as she failed to find them a good gift in JL) And I usually love a good JL advert, (I think the penguin one is my favourite.)

Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman · Today 10:14

Yeah I’m not a fan of one at all. Also what’s with going from gifting £25 cash each to
spending presumably hundreds to kit out the room. It’s bizarre

IDontDrinkTea · Today 10:17

I don’t really understand. Are JL selling tatty streamers to make a disco room? The disco room doesn’t seem to be something they actually sell in the shop

sparklymistletoe · Today 10:18

I don’t like it at all. So you have to spend a massive amount of money (that room wasn’t cheap to kit out!) for your grandchildren to hug you and give you the time of day?

KrampusWasRight · Today 10:23

Dreadful parenting from both generations.

Those kids should have been bought some wellies and chucked outside in the rain and only allowed back in when they could behave, just like we were. Jumping on the sofas? Really? “They just need something to do.” FO. I take it they had a long car journey, stuffed full of sugar and then unleashed. Would you do that to a dog? No. You’d walk the dog, give it wholesome nutritious food and then tell it to shut up or lock it in the kitchen when it was whining.

And that’s how you treat children at Christmas.

comoatoupeira · Today 10:30

The people who are asking "what did she even get them?" are being a bit daft - she decorated a room for them to have fun in, it's about the gift of an experience and spending time with someone you love (and the point is you can go to JL to buy decorations).

I just watched the last 10 years of ads on their website and I think this year's is one of the better ones. However, I agree about the parenting of the kids!

My favourite one is the one where the dad is preparing to foster a teenage girl, and learns to skateboard so that they have something to talk about when she arrives. 2023 or something?

TheNightScentedStock · Today 10:43

Absolutely dreadful-granny having to accept her house and furniture being disrespected and having to buy affection if she wants it to stop.

It would have been a better advert if KST had kicked all four of them up the arse, ordered them home and then put her feet up and ordered herself lovely items from JL while drinking a brandy and toasting herself on having a peaceful Christmas without her horrible scrounging, unmannerly, family.

KrampusWasRight · Today 10:46

And KST is thinking why couldn’t she have married Giles The Gilet and live in Richmond? But no, she married Ben the FinTecBro, they live in Canary Wharf and there isn’t a play park for miles. We can’t eat dairy, gluten or carbs when they’re here, Christmas Morning oat milk chia seed mango smoothie can go f itself, where’s my piggingfirkinblanket and don’t get me started on Christmas pudding. But Haribos are alright, are they? Where’s the gin? All for me because they don’t even firkin drink. FML. When are they leaving?

But that doesn’t compute with the children we are shown. Gentle parented kids who are trying to shake money out of a card are very excited about a disco for twenty minutes? They can’t even take it home?

Monty the penguin had more credibility than that!!

yes, I think it would make more sense if the house was more boring and less magical in the first place. They clearly found her study a bit magical already!

EverybodyLTB · Today 11:05

I had high hopes for the beautiful, stylish, and poised KST to bring something wonderful to this dull and anticlimactic genre… boo hoo!

Kids are total brats. Total, total brats. As pp said, a great idea would have been gorgeous Granny to take herself off to JL and buy herself something - maybe a cashmere scarf, fabulous perfume, or some other treats for herself.

They could have turned it around like in Motherland when Julia goes out for the evening and is feeling down about being taken advantage of and unappreciated, expected to magic up Christmas for them all. When she gets back home, her family have done everything she was due to do, ie decorated and prepped the dinner and laid the table. They could have done that, both sides could have gone to JL, the stupid permissive parents could have felt guilty and dragged the kids to John Lewis to decorate and lay the kitchen as an apology to their grandmother for rocking up and being nothing but rude. KST meanwhile was in another JL on the other side of town buying herself jazzy presents. They all come back to the house happy and realise what Christmas is all about, The End. Win-win!

ClaudiaWrinklemum · Today 11:11

What a pile of shite.

KrampusWasRight · Today 11:13

Granny should have gone to JL, cleaned them out of wellies, warm jumpers, nice thick cords, rain macs and warm hats, then taken them out for a walk in her not inconsiderably small garden and taught them how to play Pooh Sticks in this year of the centenary of Winnie the Pooh.

That disco room will last 5 mins before the novelty wears off and then they’re back to trashing her furniture.

CorporalJohn · Today 11:16

No Christmas ad has ever beaten the M&S one with the 2 Christmas fairies from a few years back. Magic and Sparkle!

I’m really warming to these re-writes, I love yours! I now have an almost overwhelming urge to go to JL and touch cord and rainmacs. They could have done all that you’ve written and then on the Christmas morning opened some sort of precious 100 year anniversary Winnie the Pooh or WTP Lego or something modern and cool to round it off and give them more adverts for the actual stuff that I assume they want to sell us. I’m pretty sure I didn’t see a single purchasable item in that ad.

Crunchymum · Today 11:23

Yep it's shit!

Terrible advert, terrible message!

PinkNeonSign · Today 11:25

I don’t mind it, KST and Sam Fender, an excellent combo! x
