Dreadful parenting from both generations.

Those kids should have been bought some wellies and chucked outside in the rain and only allowed back in when they could behave, just like we were. Jumping on the sofas? Really? “They just need something to do.” FO. I take it they had a long car journey, stuffed full of sugar and then unleashed. Would you do that to a dog? No. You’d walk the dog, give it wholesome nutritious food and then tell it to shut up or lock it in the kitchen when it was whining.

And that’s how you treat children at Christmas.

😂

IdiotCat · Today 11:28

'You can't always get what you want?'
What?
Horribly behaved spoilt and entitled kids.
Useless parents.
Buying things to make children love you.

The doggy on wheels was the only thing I liked about the whole ad.

Voltaroldemort · Today 11:32

It's the worst John Lewis Christmas ad ever.
To get the ICE QUEEN GODDESSS Kristen Scott Thomas and then have her bumbling about in slavish muddled deference to some bratty spoilt kids is really daft casting.

I would have had her instantly fixing them with an icy stare as soon as they came tumbling so rudely in to her house. And giving them the lovely
John Lewis gifts when they were finally sitting down nicely, cracking them a warm smile as she did so.

Really offensive to see her thrust into a silly old little old clueless granny mode.

KrampusWasRight · Today 11:38

The PP was right. What is this advertising? Where’s the product placement?

Voltaroldemort · Today 11:38

IDontDrinkTea · Today 10:17

I don’t really understand. Are JL selling tatty streamers to make a disco room? The disco room doesn’t seem to be something they actually sell in the shop

Yes, this too. The room looks like planet-destroying Amazon tat from China.

I seriously wonder if they have made their ad as terrible as possible because terrible gets more engagement than good. We are doing exactly what they wanted us to do.

FoxxyP · Today 11:39

Horrible, bring back the little dragon.

SpringSparrow · Today 11:45

Kristen Scott Thomas is 66. The pull along toy dog came out in 1966, when she would have been 6 years old. Wouldn’t she have been too old for it? Thought the pull along dogs were aimed at toddlers?!

WhoWhereWhenWhyHow · Today 11:46

Horrible advert, horrible parents and horrible kids

EasternStandard · Today 11:48

Terrible ad. KST far too good and glamorous to deal with bratty, ungrateful kids.

TheNightScentedStock · Today 11:50

EverybodyLTB · Today 11:05

I had high hopes for the beautiful, stylish, and poised KST to bring something wonderful to this dull and anticlimactic genre… boo hoo!

Kids are total brats. Total, total brats. As pp said, a great idea would have been gorgeous Granny to take herself off to JL and buy herself something - maybe a cashmere scarf, fabulous perfume, or some other treats for herself.

They could have turned it around like in Motherland when Julia goes out for the evening and is feeling down about being taken advantage of and unappreciated, expected to magic up Christmas for them all. When she gets back home, her family have done everything she was due to do, ie decorated and prepped the dinner and laid the table. They could have done that, both sides could have gone to JL, the stupid permissive parents could have felt guilty and dragged the kids to John Lewis to decorate and lay the kitchen as an apology to their grandmother for rocking up and being nothing but rude. KST meanwhile was in another JL on the other side of town buying herself jazzy presents. They all come back to the house happy and realise what Christmas is all about, The End. Win-win!

You should send them that idea-for a price because it's a good one, although no doubt they will already be looking through this board for reactions and ideas.

hotcrossbrum · Today 11:53

KST needs to get on the Emotional ReEducation naughty step with the over-hugging grandparents from the Irish ‘always ask for consent’ ad.

Watch out, Santa, you’re next.

Madamefroufrou · Today 11:55

CorporalJohn · Today 11:16

No Christmas ad has ever beaten the M&S one with the 2 Christmas fairies from a few years back. Magic and Sparkle!

or the famous 2002 M&S one with celebrities,
Sean Bean “men bearing gifts” swoon
so long ago, so memorable -

this one is dire and not even Mick singing,
the suspension of belief involved in Grandma dressing a room on
Christmas Eve and playing what on a record player ?! The Inkspots?

why call children in for lunch and not Grandma?
who ventures up into a dusty loft wearing a cashmere sweater
what happened to the shaggy dog?
holes you could drive a bus through

fatphalange · Today 12:05

I was ready to defend the advert as soon as I heard KST was in it and judging by the fact I usually love JL ads. Then I watched it.

WildWindySeascape · Today 12:17

I like the fact that everything looks so beautiful in the ad, John Lewis is supposed to be aspirational and I love seeing a beautifully curated Christmas look. I also love that it’s about the older generation trying to connect and be relevant to the younger generation. Yes the kids seem like brats but it’s not really about them.

Notonmyland · Today 12:25

KrampusWasRight · Today 11:13

Granny should have gone to JL, cleaned them out of wellies, warm jumpers, nice thick cords, rain macs and warm hats, then taken them out for a walk in her not inconsiderably small garden and taught them how to play Pooh Sticks in this year of the centenary of Winnie the Pooh.

That disco room will last 5 mins before the novelty wears off and then they’re back to trashing her furniture.

Fortnum and mason have him.

Rubbish and.
Di John Lewis have anything for £25 or less?

prampushingdownthehighst · Today 12:37

Always great to hear the wonderful Stones classic though
I liked it, like the message it sends too

BluebellBeth · Today 12:53

I wasn't impressed this morning but now I've had time to think about it, I quite like it. I feel the message is children prefer our time and attention rather than random gifts? Grandma didn't seem to have a close relationship with them, they didn't want a hug, she was a bit oblivious to her toy dog being too young for them and didn't know how to entertain them, she didn't want her study played in and she had no idea what to buy them because she just doesn't seem know them that well. Then she realised they adored her study, which isn't something you can replicate with a gift, so dressed it up, let them in to have fun, joined in with them, started to build that relationship and the children were thrilled with that and it was much better than any present she could buy them.

Although I'm not sure JL would be doing their sales much good with this message lol

I'm planning my Christmas social advert for my gift shop. It's going to feature father Christmas's arms and a wicker basket as he goes around the shop selecting things. I've got the white gloves already. Budget about £20!

This with Christmas bells on.

KST laser beam stare and the kids would have been silenced.

[A meaner granny might have taken the £50 in the ungrateful kids' cards and had myself a nice afternoon- coffee at JL cafe and a treat from the beauty counter. Left the kids to their iPads. Coughs]

Never had so much talent been so utterly misused.

Comvit · Today 13:15

Awful.

Bazillionaire family with spoilt feral children enabled by incompetent parents, all against the backdrop of boring, slow music.

topcat2014 · Today 13:16

On JL, I would hate the idea of being a distant parent, but you could see how it could easily happen if you live 100 miles away etc. You're not going to be popping round for tea after school. Even so, the children are not 2, so the dog thing is jarring.

Hoppinggreen · Today 14:01

Its awful
Badly behaved kids
Shit parents
Breaking stuff in a shop and running off
Bribing kids to love you
And WHAT is the present? A room?????

thisismeithinkorisit · Today 14:04

glad it's not just me. so much back story right? is this the first Christmas they've come? why is the relationship so strained? there's obviously big issues with the Mom and Daughter that have never been resolved. why didn't they bring anything to entertain the kids with before Xmas Day??

Boring and crap as usual. Haven't been good in more than a decade. Why is there always this big fanfare for the John Lewis Christmas advert?

Emperor’s New Clothes Syndrome. Such a hoo-har about naff all. Even the lunchtime news on ITV featured it. I don't know ANYone who cares. 🙄
