Do you keep medication in the bathroom?

If so, why?

Growing up I wasn’t aware of any medication in the house, it’s likely that’s because there was none, but I have just seen someone mention on another thread that meds may be kept in a bathroom and I do recall seeing this on TV.

So, the s that the ‘norm’ and I just didn’t know? When i first had my own place I just kept any meds in the kitchen, and I still do now.

Not a lot of room in the bathroom. OH keeps his dossette boxes in the bathroom. I keep meds by the side of the sofa (evening ones), on the bedside tablet (the morning ones) and then in the kitchen which are decanted into a box in my handbag every day for the ones I need throughout the day.

Nevermissabeat · 01/11/2026 08:17

No. Partly because it means someone who needs them might need to wait. I keep them in the kitchen. No one has regular medication in this house though. It would only be cough lozenges, plasters, decongestant etc.

Paracetamol and ibruprofen is hidden and handed out when needed. Teen with MH issues.

Keep ours in kitchen apart from dh’s prescribed meds which he takes first thing which are in the bedroom.

Yes, safely away in the medicine cupboard.

DeeDeeSharpWhatKindOfLadyNSoul · 01/11/2026 08:25

We would need a cabinet the size of a small suitcase
Kitchen.

CawsPobi · 01/11/2026 08:27

No, mostly it’s in the kitchen. Out first two houses didn’t have a bathroom cabinet.
My daily medication and some paracetamol is in my bedside table. When the children were small I kept calpol, the neurofen syrup and the magical medised in my bedroom before they discontinued it.

longtompot · 01/11/2026 08:58

In the upstairs bathroom cabinet we just have Rennie and Buscopan. The other medications, pain killers etc, are in a lockable wall cabinet in the kitchen

We have a LOT of meds! We don't keep any actual medicines in the bathroom. I have a small drawer in the bedroom for one-off meds (like codeine, ondansetron, zopiclone etc.) We have a top cupboard in the kitchen for all our regular prescription meds, paracetamol, cough mixture etc. - full! And the cupboard under the basin in the downstairs utility/shower room contains bandages, plasters, sterile dressings and wipes, antiseptic etc. plus a stash of disposable vomit bowls.

I personally don't because there's not enough space. I have a bag for my months supply and a hamper for other stuff or excess that's just on a shelf.

It's considered the norm in UK and USA as far as I know to keep them in there. I think often it came from having a lockable medicine cabinet. For safety. Or having an en suite so your meds would still be private.

Kitchen. My parents keep theirs in the kitchen too. Never thought to keep it upstairs in the bathroom.

No, in the kitchen. Bathroom is upstairs and not a convenient place for us at all.

Us too, it stays in a high up kitchen cupboard out of the way. I keep my prescription meds in my bedside drawer though.
I always thought it was an American thing keeping it in the bathroom cabinet, seen it in too many movies. 🤭

reluctantbrit · 01/11/2026 11:57

Kitchen has a box with things like plasters and painkillers plus all medication DH needs on a daily basis.

All other items are in the wardrobe in the bedroom.

ScaredButUnavoidable · 01/11/2026 12:00

All medication is kept in my bedroom.

Betterversionofme · 01/11/2026 12:04

Kitchen. One narrow wall cabinet (out of easy reach of children) has a key lock.

Nannyfannybanny · 01/11/2026 12:06

I don't know anyone who keeps medication in the bathroom. Most tablets etc say "store in a cool dry place ". This is NOT a bathroom!Daily medication is in a nice tin in the kitchen, high up. Anything that might be required is in plastic storage boxes high up in the wardrobe.

CherryKerry · 01/11/2026 12:08

No, not growing up or now. Medication kept on the top shelf in a kitchen cupboard.

BertramsSister · 01/11/2026 12:09

No bathroom cabinet in my house. Mine live in the kitchen. Some on dressing table ( no children here)

Harrysmummy246 · 01/11/2026 12:15

Majority are in the kitchen cupboard, with the exception of Calpol for ds at night, and my SSRIs, which have to be on the dining table if I'm going to remember to take them it seems (thanks to untreated as yet ADHD)
Ds is very sensible though and they are put away in the case of child visitors

DoAWheelie · 01/11/2026 12:16

I keep it full time in a little bag that has handles to go on the back of my wheelchair. That way everything I need is in one place and I can just grab it to take with me whenever I leave the house without the risk of forgetting anything I might need.

This is only as I have a huge number of different prescription meds though, if I just had occasional use things like paracetamol etc I'd keep them in the kitchen.

Swallowing pills and liquids feels weird to do in the bathroom as I'd never consume any other food/drink items in there due to germs. A kitchen feels far more appropriate.

MeowDoku · 01/11/2026 12:16

The generic stuff yes, paracetamol, Calpol etc I have to take daily prescription medication which lives in my bedside table as I take it as soon as I wake up so I don't forget

Rituelec · 01/11/2026 12:19

Bathroom and kitchen

Seawolves · 01/11/2026 12:27

Painkillers for me are kept in my bedside drawer.

My little boy has a cupboard in the kitchen for his meds that are in use. New, unopened bottles live in his bedside cupboard and some are kept in a bag under his bed.

His milk powder is kept in a separate kitchen cupboard, this week's syringes are kept in with his current medications and the bulk of his feed pump supplies are kept out in the garage. I have click lid boxes on top of the kitchen cupboards with feeding lines, feed caps etc so I don't have to go out to the garage each time I need to change his line.

Emergency meds are kept by the front door (rescue medication for prolonged seizures).

Nothing is under lock and key because there's only me and him in the house and he's non-mobile.

MrsSlocombesCat · 01/11/2026 12:29

My mum did and I used to find it odd. She had her tablets in there but had to get a drink from downstairs to take them. I have always kept mine in the kitchen.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 01/11/2026 13:10

Ours are in a cupboard in the kitchen. My medication is in my bedroom.

Waitingforaprick · 01/11/2026 13:20

I have so many they're on a shelf in my wardrobe. Bathroom is not a good idea, the steam and heat can ruin medicine. I only keep plasters, tweezers, toothpaste, spare brush heads etc in a bathroom cabinet.
