Do you keep medication in the bathroom?

If so, why?

Growing up I wasn’t aware of any medication in the house, it’s likely that’s because there was none, but I have just seen someone mention on another thread that meds may be kept in a bathroom and I do recall seeing this on TV.

So, the s that the ‘norm’ and I just didn’t know? When i first had my own place I just kept any meds in the kitchen, and I still do now.

Our downstairs toilet is basically a pharmacy. Regular small cabinet with mirror over the basin stores plasters, germolene, insect bite cream that set of thing. The metal locked cabinet over the toilet cistern has the bulk of DD2 meds.

legacy from when she was about 15 and very mentally unstable. For some reason she ate anything and everything including on one occasion 6 dissolve in the mouth calpol tablets. She wasn’t attempting to end herself just ravenously hungry. On an occasion she ate an entire pack of dried fruit. The resulting upset stomach was epic.

That’s a really weird thing to know about pretty much everyone you know.

But, the question was why?

The regular things I take I take last thing at night, so they live in the en suite cabinet. General household stuff like paracetamol, lives with plasters etc in a kitchen drawer.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/10/2026 22:32

We don’t have a cabinet and wouldn’t keep meds there if we did.
I’m only on thyroxine, that’s taken first thing in the morning so obviously it’s on my bedside table. DH has lots, tablets and various eyedrops also in the bedroom.

OTC meds like antihistamines and paracetamol are mainly in a bedroom drawer.

I keep mine in a box in the living room, as I take them morning, lunch time and evening. Then there's the meds that's in each of my bags and laptop bag. Then the meds in my case (I travel frequently for work). I do take 11 prescribed meds though.

I assume a bathroom cabinet was traditionally used:
-because its high up and out of reach of children
-where you might go if you'd cut yourself and needed to wash a wound before dressing it
-less likely to mix up liquid medicine bottles with drink bottles like you might in a kitchen cabinet

Growing up, my parents, both my grandparents, aunty all had meds/first aid in the bathroom cabinet. Ours are with the first aid kit in the utility cupboard. The dog first aids things are in a box next ours.

SatinHeart · 31/10/2026 22:51

Our bathroom doesn't have any high enough cabinets so our medications etc are all kept in the top of the spare room wardrobe out of sight and reach of our young DC. None of us have any daily meds though.

WearingBeautifulShoes · 31/10/2026 22:54

Unopened or rarely used meds either in bathroom cabinet or a kitchen cupboard, wherever there's room. Tablets I take first thing in a morning on bedside table. Tablets I take early evening are on the kitchen top as I'm usually in or near there at the time.

tmsbird · 31/10/2026 22:59

Bathroom cabinet, kitchen and my handbag.

Octavia64 · 31/10/2026 23:04

I’m disabled.

my evening meds are in the bathroom to remind me to take them when I brush my teeth in the morning.

morning meds are in the kitchen to be taken with breakfast.

the stash of meds is in a kitchen cupboard. Too big for bathroom.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 31/10/2026 23:07

You need water for tablets, and English bathrooms are not generally fed from the rising main. And glasses and spoons aren't normally kept there.

ILoveKits · 31/10/2026 23:11

Bedside table for daily meds
Old vanity case for stocks of prescription meds, including pain relief.
DD looks after hers, in her bedroom
Vitamins/supplements are in the kitchen.
First aid kit is in the kitchen, plus cold remedies
Pa k of ibuprofen and paracetamol in my bathroom.

EerieDemeanour · 31/10/2026 23:16

Kitchen, same for my parents and my PILs, so you can have a glass of water with your tablets. Would never have occurred to me to put it in the bathroom although I think my parents might keep plasters etc in theirs, their prescription stuff is definitely all in the kitchen. We also have some in our bedroom, mainly creams, hydrocortisone, antihistamine, things like that. But all tablets etc are in the kitchen.

It’s not that weird when I’ve been in their homes and seen the very obvious medicine cabinet on the bathroom wall.

Takeapause · 31/10/2026 23:23

Ours is split between kitchen and adult bedrooms. Children’s meds high up in kitchen like Calpol etc. everything else is in a hidden drawer in our bedrooms.

Greenspaceskeepmecalm · 31/10/2026 23:25

Kitchen cupboard or bedside table for me. Daily medication/vitamins need to be in sight or I forget!

Applestroodle · 31/10/2026 23:25

Yes. Why not?

FlowersInPots · 31/10/2026 23:31

Ours are in a plastic box in one of the utility room cupboards so they’re out of sight and each. If any particular medication is in use because one of us is ill they get moved to a cupboard in the kitchen/on the worktop (like now, LO is a bit unwell so we have Calpol and cough medicine out) so they’re easier to grab
as needed.

DM keeps hers in a drawer in the kitchen as does my dad.
No idea about anyone else.

CrushingOnRubies · 31/10/2026 23:31

Yes most meds in the bathroom. There’s a box of paracetamol, the dog’s meds and a first aid kit in the kitchen. Everything else is in the bathroom. Where else would it go??

justonemorestitch · 31/10/2026 23:41

Growing up we had a medicine cabinet in the bathroom.

We keep ours in both the kitchen and bathroom; the kitchen has a section with everything and we keep duplicate painkillers and first aid essentials in the bathroom.

photodiva · 01/11/2026 00:19

How odd. All our medication growing up was kept in the bathroom. So why do I keep all ours in the kitchen? I have absolutely no idea!!

Newmeagain · 01/11/2026 00:34

I keep medicines and first aid supplies in the kitchen.

PickAChew · 01/11/2026 00:40

No, in the kitchen where it's drier, there is more room (3 of us with prescriptions as well as the routine stuff) and there are cups and glasses.

I keep a few in my bedside drawer to take first thing.

DrMarkSloan · 01/11/2026 08:03

No, all our medicines are in the kitchen in a box at the top of a very tall cupboard. Its a huge box as it also includes plasters, antihistamines, bandages etc. Theres way to much to fit into our bathroom cabinet.

menopausequeen · 01/11/2026 08:05

I keep anything daily in the kitchen as it might need to be taken with a meal. Other things like parsing the bathroom upstairs.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/11/2026 08:06

I keep my HRT in the bathroom to remind me to use it every morning. If I had other daily meds I would also keep them in there. We keep general stuff (painkillers, antihistamines, Imodium) in a cupboard in the utility room.
