Teenager`s depression is ruining my life

I`ve been quite upset lately regarding my oldest child. Noticed upsetting and depressive behaviour in teenage girl, aged 17 (17y 9mth):

  1. says she is lonely all the time, she is actually quite social and extroverted, she actually has no friends or peers her own age. She is home educated and we live in a very small town where the other residents and what peers her own age there are (of which there arent many as most of the towns residents are middle aged commuters) tend to ignore her/leave her out. Theres also a dire lack of social spaces in our local area for youths- most kid or retiree orientated.

2)says she is ugly, apparently we cant get braces/teeth fixed on NHS (too late to join waiting list), cannot afford private. Noticed she has been eating noticeably less food (observed her cutting all food into quarters, now only eats three quarters of what I serve her, drinking large amount of water). Shes 5ft 4, 75kg and wears size 12/14 clothes.

3)has no idea what to do post 18. The idea was to send her to college next year, but she expresses just a generic (apprenticeship) or low payed retail jobs. Definitely doesnt want to go to university, going to be difficult with 1 gcse, even though she is doing english and maths functional skill level 1 this year. I told her to do freelance part time like me but hasnt favoured this.

Personally I think she has depression. I was considering talking therapy, is this the best option?

You again.

This is why homeschooling should be banned (unless there is SEN and everything else has been tried first and even then it should be very closely monitored).

Reading OPs other threads, her daughter clearly has some sort of undiagnosed SEND/ND, despite OP saying she doesnt.

There is an epidemic of kids like yours about to be launched in life. Those parents who took kids out to home educate and failed miserably. It is a choice and one which needs hard work - which many parents do and have well rounded and educated kids. You, OP, have not done this and as a result have failed your child. If you have done six hours of education five days a week why on earth does she only have two qualifications and not the two most important ones? I really hope
she goes to college and is allowed to grow and make her own decisions.

Well said.

I’ve always felt a lot of it is about the parents’ neediness and Munchausen-by-proxy claims the child ‘can’t tolerate school because they have anxiety/ASD/PDA’.

It’s going to be an absolute shitshow.

It’s a chicken and egg situation.

This is a child that has been isolated from society, not brought up normally. How do we tell what is ND and what is trauma and a lack of soft skills from being locked up with her mum all day? She sounds like she desperately wants to live a normal life and make friends.

My heart breaks for her if I’m honest

It's not depression, it's your neglectful parenting.

JacknDiane · 30/10/2026 19:56

Poor kid.

socks1107 · 30/10/2026 19:57

I’ve known a few young people with parents like
you that shrink their world. Read what others have said and get her into college asap. You’ve neglected her needs growing up and you’ve only yourself to blame but you now need to take the advice and let her be a young adult with a future

Did you ever think that you might be ruining hers? I’ve read your previous stream of consciousness rants. That poor, poor girl. I hope she escapes you and goes on to have a wonderful life.

BusyExpert · 30/10/2026 20:10

I have just read some of your previous threads. All I can say is how deeply sorry I am for your daughter. You have failed your daughter at every level. No wonder she is depressed.

Bestfootforward11 · 30/10/2026 20:16

I do recall a previous post although I can’t remember all the details. Your DD may or may not have depression, it is not possible for anyone to say on an online forum with limited info. I am assuming you want to help your DD move forward in a positive way. Can I ask, what steps have been taken since your last post? There is no magic solution but action must be taken to see what things might help. I think previously, it was suggested she apply to college, has she done so? Could she do volunteering or get a part time job? Has she been assessed for SEN? Have you been to a gp? Have you tried getting her into exercise eg walks every day, jogging, yoga (can do for free, lots of stuff online). What kind of food is she eating each day? Does she have hobbies? I am not sure of the precise circumstances but if you want things to be better for your DD you need to be proactive.
Re dental work, if it is something that is impacting your DD and is needed, then look into costs (payment plans are possible) and find extra work if you need to to be able to pay for it.

Daughter's depression ruining your life?
Take a long, hard look at yourself.
From someone who's still healing at 48.

Arlanymor · 30/10/2026 18:42

Last time you posted she had two GCSEs, did she lose one down the back of the sofa?

In another thread it was 3 (French, Spanish, computer science).

She's probably got four now... the last one being MIU (making it up!)

bt1234 · 30/10/2026 20:37

You are incredibly selfish. Her depression is ruining your life?? You have created this situation.
I feel so sorry for your children. Why have you not got her on waiting lists for dentists/braces. I would suggest encouraging her to go to college, get your other children into school, then you need to work full-time, up skill yourself and pay for a private dentist for your child.
And please do not make your daughter feel bad for being depressed, this is your fault, not hers
I encourage other posters to read the previous threads from the OP

itwasntme2019 · 30/10/2026 21:22

have you ever wondered if you’re the problem?

Hotdogsandfries · 30/10/2026 21:26

Wow!

SylvanMoon · 30/10/2026 21:41

I feel so sorry for your daughter and hope that she can find a path out of what you've provided for her. I sincerely hope that something happens to make you see some sense and stop this tragedy from also befalling your son. As others have said, you have not done a service to either of your children, despite whatever prompted you to make the choices you have. If you truly love them, please set them free and allow them to go to school, get genuinely valued qualifications and friends. You are not able to provide any of this for either of them.

Leo800 · 30/10/2026 21:43

School would have provided peers and a social life for her. Why has she only got 1 GCSE?

Terfedout · 30/10/2026 21:58

Jasus what have I just read. This thread and your last one are appalling.

Some people should not be allowed to have children. And this is why I don't agree with homeschooling as a rule either.

Your daughter is inadequately educated, isolated, and overweight. This is all on you. And you say that she is ruining your life?

Glowingup · 30/10/2026 22:13

I know a few people who have home educated their kids and who claimed at the time that they were taking it seriously and doing lots of learning. None of these children have ended up with more than a few GCSEs and are working menial jobs here. Home education should be banned unless the parents fork out for private tutors. This poor girl’s future is bleak because her mum chose to believe that primary school teachers were violently assaulting pupils and instead decided to ruin her daughters life.

jamdodger3 · 30/10/2026 23:01

My Dad remarried and had 3 children now aged 19, 18 and 17.

Once she had the 3 children she wanted, she divorced him.

His ex wife sounds just like you OP.

She stopped all 3 kids going to school at 7, 8 and 9 and were “homeschooled”. To cut a long story short, my 19 year old sibling spends 23 hours a day in her room, has no friends other than ones she talks to on internet, she starves herself then binges for months then starves herself then repeat, she’s aggressive, has depression and anxiety but is too anxious to take ANY medication because she is convinced drs are trying to poison us. She has 0 GCSE’s. She can’t drive because her Mum keeps all of her PIP money to pay bills.

My 18 year old sibling just goes out drinking and doing drugs all the time, also no GCSE’s, started a hairdressing course but didn’t like being told what to do so quit.

My 17 year old sibling with ADHD regularly rips doors off the hinges, puts holes through their walls, stays in playing violent video games 24/7, also has no friends apart from online.

I’ll just add that my Dad spent his life savings on court for 5 years to try and get custody of them until two of them was convinced to lie and say that my Dad was violent towards their Mother on a regular basis (not true).

None of them can handle real life, none of them have true friends, none of them have jobs. They’ll be living with their Mother for life because of the damage she has done.

My Dad is broken because of it, all these years later, still. He is remarried and has been for 10 years. I can’t even count the number of times they’ve come down to stay for weekends and caused some huge drama, one time they lied and called their mum to pick them up and said my dad held a knife to the middle one’s throat in the kitchen. Luckily, what they didn’t know is that there is a camera in the kitchen as a pet cam for the dog when they pop out for a couple of hours, which showed them playing around with knives and my Dad was fast asleep next to his wife.

Yet, he still tries with them because they are his kids.

It’s sad to see/hear/read about parents who don’t do everything in their power to ensure their kids are educated, brought up without inflicting anxiety and trauma.

All I know is that my 2 children can be anything they want to be, they will always be told and encouraged by me and their Dad, my DH, that you can do anything you put your mind to. SCHOOL is hard, SOCIALISING can be hard, LIFE can be hard but what good are we doing by removing any and all stress from them? They won’t grow into adults who know how to function. It’s sad, really sad.

This is so tragic and I feel so very bad for you and your DF. I feel even sadder that the OP will be unable to see herself or her children in what you've so poignantly described.

Going through your threads this can’t be real? Switching between how your daughter is depressed based on your failings and then picking a swimming costume. Her not going to college because the kids are snobs because they have straight teeth, is it snobby to not neglect kids? Having a £350 weekly food budget, while working part time, but can’t afford dentistry for your daughter, although the thread is about your son needing it?

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/10/2026 04:25

Yes, get her some talking therapy right now.

This will help her to figure a way out of how things are for her.

She’s almost an adult.

BeethovenNinth · 31/10/2026 07:16

Christ. what a pile in on the OP.

one of mine is learning at home. Despite everything I tried, I couldn’t get her back to school after she burnt out post lockdown. (Well she got back for a few months and the stress caused her to self harm so badly I had to pull her out).

I hate that she is home educated but we have no other choice. She would barely leave the house if I didn’t force her and every day - every day - I worry I have enabled her tiny life to become smaller

OP - I think your DD also needs out the house. Can you drive? What about local volunteering project - does she like kids or animals? Something once a week to give her a focus. I would start there to get her confidence and lift her

I am not sure if you say she has an eating disorder, if she is neurodivergent then they often go hand in hand. As she is 17, it becomes very hard to sort by you (as CAMHS is a shit show unless your child is basically dying). But I would keep an eye on that. I feel if she becomes happier then the rest will fall into place
