Things you learned about life from MN

I grew up before the internet and reality TV, so all you could know about people came from fiction, and the world around you.

I never knew any cocklodgers growing up.

All the men (and most of the women) I knew were uptight, tortured workaholics - which wasn’t great either, and the men still demanded a disproportionate amount of emotional and administrative and domestic support from their female partners.

But until I joined MN I had no idea how many men out there take no pride in a work ethic or professional identity, and feel no responsibility to pay their own way. And it is SO common on here - across class and education levels and cultures and nationalities. All these freeloading men! I never knew!

I also had no idea how much variation there was in couples’ approaches to money. Long-married couples with strictly separate finances who insist on being paid half for a pint of milk. Families where all child related costs come out of the mother’s earnings & the father’s money is all his own. Couples where it’s totally normal to talk about money, and couples where it’s completely taboo.

And sex! I’m in awe of the people who have sex every day even when their fastidiousness requires them to cover the bed in special sex towels beforehand and boil wash the sheets immediately afterwards and hose themselves down with disinfectant before and after.

I also had no idea how all-consuming elder care was until my own experience brought me to the Elderly Parents board, and I discovered a whole massive parallel universe of ageing parents whose ‘independence’ comes at vast emotional, professional, and financial expense to their daughters.

What other different realities have people had their eyes opened to on here?

As a serious question, do you then carry floss, toothpaste tubes, sanitary protection, cotton buds etc around until you get to a bin?

Well yes but we have bins in all the bedrooms. It isn’t much stuff, mostly cotton wool. I haven’t used sanitary protection for a while, I water floss so no dental floss. A toothpaste tube once in a while. My friends are my age and my daughters wouldn’t leave SP in any bin when they visit. They wouldn’t leave it in a bin in their houses either. They know where the outside bins are.

How utterly amazing women can be to one another and how unutterably vile and that anyone with a hairless minge is married to a raging paedo.

Sanpro no longer used in our house unless DD is home, and yes, I just take the other bits into our bedroom, opposite the bathroom, to put in the bin.

We do have a bathroom bin BTW and it goes into the bathroom every time DD is home or when we have guests.

Never! It’s not healthy to sleep with pants.

Of course it's not unhealthy

We don’t have bins in either of our bathrooms. Why? It just never occurred to me. I just carry any bits out with me to the nearest bin when I leave. It is a while ago, but I wouldn’t have left used sanitary protection in the bin for someone else to smell or dispose of.

How’s putting it in another bin any different?

Macaroni46 · 01/11/2026 09:40

Flipperthepriest · 01/11/2026 09:25

I also learned the carrying thing on here. Made slightly more sense when I found out some people apparently don't pre-separate bathroom bin rubbish and would be going through it for recycling. But frankly even then it's less odd to just put the shampoo bottles straight into the recycling in the first place and not have a norm of people carrying used sanpro around.

I agree. Just can’t get my head round it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Heyhelga · 01/11/2026 09:48

Think the recurring theme for me i take off MN is that some people need to have drama in their life. Some people perhaps seek out drama without even realising it and some people perhaps intentionally go out looking for drama.

The astonishing levels of ageism there are on MN (towards people over 70). Makes me very scared for the future....

I’m sure they do. But why would they be spending their time watching videos of people pronouncing things in different accents?

If you had a TV watching up you would have seen Coronation Street and Eastenders and Father Ted, etc. and you'd know that people pronounce things differently. You'd also be able to recognise and understand accents different from your own.

Yes, plus accents can change from village to village/town etc within a couple of miles so you would surely hear different ones in your daily life unless you literally never went anywhere!

And the love of Boden. I wouldn’t recognise any of these brands unless they had a big label on the front but people get very aerated about it 🤣

Actually try over 50! People talk about the 80s and 90s like they were Victorian times!

Mongojustapawn · 01/11/2026 12:38

Go out and see and experience the world. Take all written here with a grain of salt. This is just one perception. I find all of this entertaining and informative but its just one view in a vast world of views. Take what you read and if it alarms you verify. Understand what you see is more a reflection of you. Life has always been this way, but we have the freedom to create our own word if we wish.

DriveInSaturday · 01/11/2026 12:40

10 pages in and nobody has mentioned two of the things I've learned.

The adoption board has wise and supportive posters who are happy to share their experienced advice. I've learned how trauma affects adopted children and why you need a different approach to parenting.

MLMs are the other thing that Mumsnet introduced me to. What a nasty business model. I know there are MLMs that target men, but so many of them target mums who need extra money.

There's a very funny, current thread about marrying young in the 1990s.

If you believe everything on there then "living in sin" was absolutely forbidden and women could not have their own bank accounts or get a mortgage.

It's bonkers.

Yes i saw that 🙈 That was the attitude my mother faced in the early 70s, not the 80s and 90s!

Eh? How is it unhealthy.

Sesquipedahlia · 01/11/2026 13:31

@Charliepingpong, that thread was weird.

Very strange being effectively told by (clearly much younger) posters that I couldn’t have a bank account, or sex before marriage, or live with a boyfriend in the 1980s when I was an undergraduate and then in London at the start of a professional career!

CharliePingPong · 01/11/2026 14:36

@Sesquipedahlia

It's like people were talking about the 1890s. I got married and had two children in the eighties. I'd had a bank account and had lived independently since the 70s. There's a lot of batshittery on MN, but this one is right up there with the best.

Ha! I was living in sin with a bank account in 1978!
