Is it normal for a young adult to take a teddy and a comfort blanket on a plane?

Seen this a few times while travelling. The staff just stick the fluffy toys and blankets in the overhead locker so defeats the object. Maybe just try biting the seat in front of you to calm your nerves or take some valium. I'm a nervous flyer so just havd a couple of drinks.

Thinking about it, a Teddy and a blanket sounds to me like much more mindful and in a way mature solution than having a few drinks.

I think this.

Probably not "normal", no, but possibly more evolved than drugs and alcohol.

I doubt anyone would let such a harmless thing bother them.

Calliopespa · 27/10/2026 19:03

I mean a bear approaching the size of needing his own seat could be a problem, but other than that, live and let live.

All the posters thinking it’s totally normal for a NT adult to bring a teddy on a plane…..

Im sure they’d be thinking differently if it was the Pilot bringing along their Teddy for comfort.

Singapore airlines give passengers a complimentary teddy so can't be that unusual

Imagine being this hateful, intolerant and judgemental.

Exactly. Also imagine being so unimaginative you canot even envision a scenario where someone might do this.

(See also, the poster I recall from years ago wondering why nappies went up to adult sizes and opined that clearly some people were shit parents who needed to be more firm with their child).

So, you’re suggesting alcohol and class-C drugs instead of a blanket and teddy bear?

Oh FGS, unclench! You’ll do yourself a mischief

Not normal, no. Sounds like part of the general infantilisation of adults who think acting sad/vulnerable will get them extra care and kiddy gloves from others (not including learning disabilities etc)

Your ableism is showing. I don’t have learning disabilities and I take my own blanket. I also have my childhood knitted doll on my bed.

Because they can't have odd objects blocking the gangways in case of emergency.

How are books, phones, iPads, any different to teddies and blankets OP? They would all cause an obstruction in the event of a crash.

EmmaB1309 · 27/10/2026 19:09

Yeah cos alcohol, Valium and chewing the furniture is better than a harmless stuffed animal and a blanket! 🙄

It's infantile behaviour. Soon they will take a teddy to work to protect them from the bad manager or anyone telling them what to do.

Had that on a thread a couple of weeks ago about a young woman who had to have her support plush toy at work.

Ofcourse it's weird as fuck unless you have a severe disability where you're mentally a child but everyone loves to be selfrighteous and show off how inclusive they are.

Today, however, she started walking around the office with a stuffed toy. She brought the toy-a crocheted horse- into the meetings and had it on her lap, with the head poking onto the table while she was typing, and was hugging it to her body when walking back from meeting rooms like a child and talking to other team members.

Nooooo. I’d really struggle not to laugh at that!

If you put a blanket over you, you are impeding the crew from seeing if you are buckled up. I think that's why they put the blanket in the overhead locker for take off.

I have flown many times for many years and most airlines provide a blanket for all passengers on long haul flights. It is there waiting for you when you get to your seat and available for take off if you want it.

I couldn't care less about teddies or blankets that other passengers might want to take. They have zero impact on me.

Have you been on a plane? They just ask you to push it aside so they see the belt (most people do this anyway when they see them checking) or tell you to fasten the belt over the blanket.

Hellohelga · 27/10/2026 19:19

Didn’t someone post last week about an employee carrying a soft toy around the office and talking in a baby voice? Also a post about adults in petting farms queueing up with children to pet rabbits. Infantile in the extreme.

I really couldn't care less. I actually think it would be really cool to have a teddy pilot insta showing all its travels :D

ChaToilLeam · 27/10/2026 19:34

Blankets are pretty standard as planes get chilly, I usually take a big scarf that can double as a blanket if I need it. I would find it strange to see an adult with a toy but presume they had it for a reason and put it out of my mind.

As for petting zoos, I'd queue up any time to pet cute animals. Can't walk past a cat without saying hello either.

Zaza2020 · 27/10/2026 19:37

I must have been living under a rock. But i have never seen an adult on a plane with a teddy. A blanket on long haul - yes!! It takes all kinds.....

But the passengers can hold them.or put them on the floor under the seat in front. I've never seen a flight attendant take a blanket or teddy off anyone on a flight..
I don't see why it should bother you if it helps someone with anxiety

Have you seen the thread where the OP's colleague brings a support teddy to work and in to meetings?

I wouldn't be able to keep in a giggle if I saw that.

Careful. You will be accused of being a hateful bigot 😅

I would insist on my pilot bringing his teddy into the cabin in order to provide invaluable advice and guidance in case of an emergency.

I am not sure what business it is of yours? maybe just try keeping your beak out?

Lokiswife · 27/10/2026 19:49

I'm 46 & take a build a bear axolotl anywhere I go overnight. I have the whole collection of them on my bed too. Rather them than a moaning misery man any day!!!

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/10/2026 19:50

The airlines issue their own standard blankets which are quite thin and compact and not looking like duvets which I have seen. That one was stored in the overhead cabinet during takeoff and landing along with the big stuffed toy.

What is a Teddy going to tell you during a flight? It's OK we're not gonna crash. It's just a bit of bad turbulence during a flight. I used to have conversations with my teddy when I was about 5. Sometimes I used to beat him up to vent my anger. I wouldn't want to see a 24 year old in front of me on a plane punching a teddy.

Punching your teddy is weird at any age…
