Is it normal for a young adult to take a teddy and a comfort blanket on a plane?

Seen this a few times while travelling. The staff just stick the fluffy toys and blankets in the overhead locker so defeats the object. Maybe just try biting the seat in front of you to calm your nerves or take some valium. I'm a nervous flyer so just havd a couple of drinks.

I have a teddy. It travels the world with me
Its been to some amazing places
He has a name and has a facebook page with over 2400 friends (who are all soft toys)

Does that upset you? Shame

I'm a big believe in 'if it doesn't harm anyone else then it's fine'.

If you put a blanket over you, you are impeding the crew from seeing if you are buckled up. I think that's why they put the blanket in the overhead locker for take off.

In my experience they will just ask you to move the blanket so they can check you're buckled up.

Same as they would if your clothing had covered the buckle.

Unless its an enormous double blanket or they were in the exit seats next to the door where you aren't allowed luggage on the floor/ your lap?

I always used to travel with my small lucky stuffed "B the bunny" - took it to exams as well. Had to give it up when I became disabled in my 50s.

It was a teeny bit embarrassing when I was pulled in by Special Branch at Heathrow and they examined it very suspiciously - prodded B and took her for an additional scan.

Imagine being this hateful, intolerant and judgemental.

So, you’re suggesting alcohol and class-C drugs instead of a blanket and teddy bear?

Lol, sounds good to me!

maxslice · 27/10/2026 18:16

But the person knows they are right overhead if they need them. It’s unusual, but if they have a lot of anxiety about flying or are ND and it helps them without bothering others, I see no problem with it. I’m a TERRIBLE flyer. But I ask the flight attendant for a gin and tonic that I use to wash down half a Xanax. If I thought a blanket and a stuffy would help, I’d take them too.

I’d love a link please

We bought them about 15-16 years ago pre kids, we went to France and found Europe on a mini cruise and it was absolutely Baltic and we bought them on the ferry from one of the shops on there.
I’ve just had a google, and I can’t see anything quite like it but it’s basically a microfibre fleece so really warm but not bulky, in a poncho design and they’re ankle length and they fold into fleece bags.
they were quite expensive I think about £40-50 at the time and we questioned ourselves but they go on every holiday with us and they wash up really well so money well spent xx

If you take valium and alcohol you impede the crew getting you out safely , is this another one of your wind ups

What is a Teddy going to tell you during a flight? It's OK we're not gonna crash. It's just a bit of bad turbulence during a flight. I used to have conversations with my teddy when I was about 5. Sometimes I used to beat him up to vent my anger. I wouldn't want to see a 24 year old in front of me on a plane punching a teddy.

Some people are nervous flyers. A lot of ND young adults are intellectually the same as their peers but emotionally several years younger. Their development is uneven.

Fidgety31 · 27/10/2026 18:25

Blankets are provided on long haul flights so the staff are not going to be taking your own blanket off you !

FidgetSpinners · 27/10/2026 18:26

Tee hee it's like I'm back in the 90s when everyone laughed at everything at everyone's expense and no one got offended because everything was funny. I miss those days so much.

Ohthatsabitshit · 27/10/2026 16:25

Why are staff taking anything from passengers?

If you're unfortunate enough to be stuck by the fire exit you can't anything under the seat in front of you or next to you on the seat. I have it, but it's good for tall people I suppose as there's more leg space.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 27/10/2026 18:29

Personally I would far rather sit next to someone with a blanket and teddy than someone who's been mixing drugs and alcohol.

Not that fond of flying myself and the anxiety is made worse when people around me are obviously under the influence.

Mosaic80 · 27/10/2026 18:49

I wouldn’t really be bothered either way. If it provides a bit of familiarity or comfort then I’m all for it.

My Dd has a lot of soft toys, she is early 20's, and one little teddy she has had for about 20 years has travelled the world with her, she now leaves him at home because he is fragile, but she says she doesn't know what she would do if anything happened to him.I've never been a big advocate of stiff upper lip, and I think it can only be a good thing if folks are happy to show their softer side

Are you being serious? A teddy cant talk....as a 5yo you would have known that. You might have spoken for the teddy but you knew it was you talking, right?

A teddy is a good substitute for a pillow and noone tells you it has to fit in your tiny bag, lol.

Lots of people have neurodiversity, they may find teddy's comforting - my DD does.

I need a blanket on a flight, I find planes get very cold.

What is it that you are objecting to?????

Nylonflares · 27/10/2026 18:53

No, it’s weird

a blanket is ok

It might be ND but more likely it’s an adult who refuses to grow up . It’s not their fault though, poor lamb

AtIusvue · 27/10/2026 18:57

All the posters thinking it’s totally normal for a NT adult to bring a teddy on a plane…..

Im sure they’d be thinking differently if it was the Pilot bringing along their Teddy for comfort.

They tell you to fasten your seat belt over the blanket if you intend sleeping, for observation purposes

brownbootsandhats · 27/10/2026 18:59

Strange how alcohol and drugs are ok even though they do affect us all, not just the user

whereas the bear is seen as off even though it affects no one else

yes It’s unusual- but should it be so ? Wouldn’t society be better for more teddies and less booze ?

ThisZanyCoralShark · 27/10/2026 18:59

How do you get valium for a flight these days?

why do you care? I take a blanket because im cold on planes. And i am autistic and like my own blanket.

If someone started punching their teddy, I’d find this funny.
