Is it normal for a young adult to take a teddy and a comfort blanket on a plane?

Seen this a few times while travelling. The staff just stick the fluffy toys and blankets in the overhead locker so defeats the object. Maybe just try biting the seat in front of you to calm your nerves or take some valium. I'm a nervous flyer so just havd a couple of drinks.

Punching your teddy is weird at any age…

And quite disturbing.

I always travel with a blanket - planes are cold. My sister travels with a teddy instead of a travel pillow as that’s what she finds more comfortable. Neither of those things have ever been put in the overhead cabin.

Same here! Always travel with a blanket as planes are so cold. Have never had it taken off me. Have been asked to move it so the cabin crew can see my seatbelt is done up. I don’t know who the op is flying with!

If you put a blanket over you, you are impeding the crew from seeing if you are buckled up. I think that's why they put the blanket in the overhead locker for take off.

You put the blanket on then put the seat belt over. Sometimes the staff even give you a blanket! I’ve never seen anyone take a pillow, teddy, iPad, book, or any object off a passenger and put it the overhead locker, unless it was a bag that didn’t fit under the seat.

What a load of tosh!

I think the OP may have consumed too many flight drinks!!

Barney16 · 27/10/2026 20:03

I take a blanket because planes are cold. I can't see why it matters really what people have with them to make them feel comfy. I would rather sit next to someone with a teddy than someone drunk tbh.

It doesn’t sound like you have ever been on a flight tbh. People use blankets, long haul flights provide them and a cushion. No one is putting teddies in the aisle. Or beating up teddies

MildlyOvercaffeinated · 27/10/2026 20:03

OP, are you on Valium right now? Are the teddy and blanket in the room with us…? 👀

Have literally never seen or heard of crew removing comfort items from passengers to put overhead before now. Seems a very strange and useless thing to do when ideally you want passengers docile and compliant for a flight.

Strange how alcohol and drugs are ok even though they do affect us all, not just the user

whereas the bear is seen as off even though it affects no one else

yes It’s unusual- but should it be so ? Wouldn’t society be better for more teddies and less booze ?

Absolutely.

Totally harmless behaviour being ridiculed with labels like "infantile" from people who consider adequate to deal with their own nerves by alcohol.

I take it as a sign of new maturity - take care of your own nerves without drinking in a way which doesn't impact anyone else, even when some drunks would judge you just because they wouldn't have the guts to do the same.

questiontime1234 · 27/10/2026 20:12

A blanket, yes they have to take that as it can impede exit in an emergency, even in business class. A life sized stuffed animal maybe. Plane teams have never removed a small stuffed animal from my children and we fly a lot.

If I was sat next to Paddington I’d ask him why he talks with a posh southern accent when he’s from Peru.

Oh I know the answer to this.

It's because he and Uncle Pastuzo learned English by listening to the recordings Montgomery Clyde left with them in preparation for their big family trip to London - which never happened because Uncle Pastuzo sadly dies and Aunt Lucy didn't feel up to it.

The flight crew had probably been warned that there was a Teddy Abuser on board ... so they were being stashed for safety lest the OP started bashing them.🐻

OneandFiveOnly · 27/10/2026 20:25

it seems normal for people to judge healthy coping mechanisms whilst swallowing class c drugs and alcohol to cope….

Smallestshadow · 27/10/2026 20:29

Why do you think they’d be punching the teddy? 🤣🤣

Disturbia81 · 27/10/2026 20:30

You sound like the type of person who judges adults who love Disney. Not my thing but let people do what makes them happy if it doesn’t harm others. We need more innocence in the world.

The question wasn’t whether people can do it, but rather is it normal

It’s obviously not.

OP said at 16:41 she used to vent on her teddy aged 5 by punching it.

JLou08 · 27/10/2026 20:41

A teddy and a blanket sounds like a healthier coping mechanism than alcohol and drugs.

DrNeededInInflatorRoom · 27/10/2026 20:44

It’s not hurting anyone is it? If it makes someone feel more comfortable then what’s the harm? One of my dc is 12, not a young adult but not a little kid anymore either, and still takes a comfort toy away with them, I’d never tell them they couldn’t no matter their age. It’s a help to them, I don’t care what others think and dc doesn’t seem to either. Children grow up far too quickly anyway.

To suggest alcohol and drugs are a better coping mechanism is madness. It might be a more normalised and accepted way of coping but there are many more risks associated with them. Perfectly reasonable that someone might not want to take pills or drink alcohol and would prefer something like a comfort item instead.

Maybe report it to the police for furry abuse. I was joking of course.

What?! Most long haul flights hand blankets out, they don’t take them away.

XenoBitch · 27/10/2026 20:51

How does this affect you?
During my theatre nursing days, we would have adults come in with teddies etc.
If it keeps you calm and happy, then that is all that matters.
I think it is mean spirited to sneer at other people's coping mechanisms.

Singapore airlines give passengers a complimentary teddy so can't be that unusual

They do WHAT? I didn't get a teddy last time I flew Singapore. I shall complain.

PurpleTurtle81 · 27/10/2026 20:54

I don't think it's normal but wouldn't give two hoots if somebody did, each to their own!
