Discovered I was a creative 'muse' for an old flame 30 years ago. Feeling completely thrown

I recently uncovered my university diaries from the mid-1990s and have been completely thrown by what I found when reading my contemporary self. Back then, while navigating a difficult long-distance relationship with the man who is now my husband of 24 years, I had a brief, incredibly intense, and angsty six-month affair with a co-worker. He was an international student, deeply introspective, and far more worldly than me. I always assumed I was just a passing, conventional interlude in his life and that he’d forgotten me. However, on finding my diaries, out of curiosity I looked up his adult career - he became a successful screenwriter and director - and I was shocked to discover that one of his major, internationally broadcast TV drama series relies directly on the exact, highly specific relationship dynamics, conversations, and emotional conflicts we shared, even down to naming a core character after my husband. I am happily married and have no intention of disrupting my real life, but processing the sudden realisation that I was a defining creative muse for a successful television production decades ago has reopened a closed compartment in my mind. I am struggling with a surreal wave of nostalgia and really need a space to process these feelings, as I can't talk about this with anyone in my real life.

You can remember it all in forensic detail 30 years later? How would he know your husband’s name?

Because the OP was in a long distance relationship with the man she later married when she had her angsty six-month fling with the future auteur — presumably she spoke about him to him at the time, so he knew he was in a love triangle.

Thank you. I was confused by the post because I thought I'd made it clear. I didn't remember every tiny detail until I read my diaries. But he knew about my boyfriend from day 1, and that was the cause of most of the angst. I was never going to leave my boyfriend. Maybe he has a good memory, as a writer? Maybe he kept his own diaries? I don't know, but he definitely knew the name of my boyfriend because we argued about him daily!

This. I think you’re being a little bit melodramatic with the ‘defining creative muse’ stuff, OP. Writers are magpies. We’ll use anything. My third novel has a lead character based on a friend of mine and DH’s, based on me imagining what he’d be like in an extramarital affair, one of the main settings is a friend’s grandmothers house that I visited once or twice in the 80s, there’s an archaeology dig based on one I worked on as a student in the 90s, and the main character”s highly technical job is the job of a close friend who has talked me through it in detail, and corrected the MS where necessary.

I agree with this I was a bit weirded out to read the debut novel of an old uni friend and find I was a main character in it. It was very obviously me from the name (mine!), distinctive physical description and specific details of our friendship. But what was weird was that it was obviously her story, not mine, and I was just featured in it. A reminder that we are all just passing in and out of each other's lives. Don't overthink it, OP. Good for you that you have built a life you love with your DH. Treasure it.

I had someone make a portrayal of me in a novel that was very derogatory and some of it made up. But I was a somewhat incidental character.
