Discovered I was a creative 'muse' for an old flame 30 years ago. Feeling completely thrown

I recently uncovered my university diaries from the mid-1990s and have been completely thrown by what I found when reading my contemporary self. Back then, while navigating a difficult long-distance relationship with the man who is now my husband of 24 years, I had a brief, incredibly intense, and angsty six-month affair with a co-worker. He was an international student, deeply introspective, and far more worldly than me. I always assumed I was just a passing, conventional interlude in his life and that he’d forgotten me. However, on finding my diaries, out of curiosity I looked up his adult career - he became a successful screenwriter and director - and I was shocked to discover that one of his major, internationally broadcast TV drama series relies directly on the exact, highly specific relationship dynamics, conversations, and emotional conflicts we shared, even down to naming a core character after my husband. I am happily married and have no intention of disrupting my real life, but processing the sudden realisation that I was a defining creative muse for a successful television production decades ago has reopened a closed compartment in my mind. I am struggling with a surreal wave of nostalgia and really need a space to process these feelings, as I can't talk about this with anyone in my real life.

Only you would know about what you argued about and the inner workings of your relationship at the time.

I was a muse for a boyfriend who dabbled in songwriting. It’s weird listening back and realising the songs were about us and it brought a lot flooding back.

i, like you, am very much happy in my relationship now. But it’s weird to think of the intensity and intimacy right there

I have had a university friendship turned into a movie with actual actors that people know. We are no longer in touch. It happened some years ago and it still gives me vertigo.

Huh? He wrote about his relationship with the op and conversations they had, and he knew about it because he lived it

No, the op wrote this:

What makes it so unmistakable to me isn't the outer plot, but the highly specific psychological arguments and internal conflicts that are lifted straight out of the pages of my private diary. It’s a very strange feeling to see your own private 21-year-old angst adapted for the screen

How does her ex know what she wrote in her “private diary”? Huh?

TwoFishBlue · Today 10:44

Have you read Yellow Face? Covers some of these themes (creative "stealing"; of course it isn't stealing but it feels ... weird? violating? (I guess it depends) for those of us involved without permission of volition.

KeepOnCleaning · Today 10:45

Thank you everyone for the different perspectives. To those who shared similar unsettling experiences of seeing aspects of your lives or your families' lives used as material, thank you, it really helped to hear I'm not alone in finding it a lot to digest.
I completely understand the skepticism about confirmation bias and patterns. If I didn't hold the literal written records of the very specific arguments, dynamics, and timelines in my hands, I would be skeptical too! But I know what we lived through, and I know how uncanny the parallels are.
Ultimately, I just needed a completely anonymous space to vent and let off a bit of steam about a very surreal wave of nostalgia. I have no intention of reaching out to him or letting this disrupt my lovely, stable real life.
For those who asked, I did tell my boyfriend after the affair ended. He made a choice, and it has never been mentioned again. You need to understand the context of an international relationship in the 90s. We were 21 years old, saw each other a handful of weeks s year, and spoke on the phone once a week. There was no what's app or facetime!

If you are around a writer, you are material. Everything is. I am always taking notes.

You're being very pendantic. He didn't read my diary. I remember the details now from my contemporary words. He didn't need to read my actual words because he lived the same experiences.

@HowTheLight i know, and I write too. I think there’s something about how close it is to what happened that is disconcerting particularly when it hits mainstream media and recognition and as a main character you had no idea. I am not angry but the closest thing I can describe how it still makes me feel is vertigo

Probably, in fairness, because they were both self-dramatising, introspective 21 year olds, angsting over their doomed love, as the OP suggests. He was probably keeping a mirror-image diary of hers with the same kinds of rumination!

No, I’m not being pedantic I’m being realistic. Your perception of what happened is unique to you, I strongly suspect you’ve watched the show and worked backwards to make your version of events in your “private diary” match the material.

It’s apparent to me you didn’t really get the responses you wanted to your thread and don’t appreciate being questioned on its veracity.

This. I think you’re being a little bit melodramatic with the ‘defining creative muse’ stuff, OP. Writers are magpies. We’ll use anything. My third novel has a lead character based on a friend of mine and DH’s, based on me imagining what he’d be like in an extramarital affair, one of the main settings is a friend’s grandmothers house that I visited once or twice in the 80s, there’s an archaeology dig based on one I worked on as a student in the 90s, and the main character”s highly technical job is the job of a close friend who has talked me through it in detail, and corrected the MS where necessary.

Pretty sure I’ve read this book but it’s not the 3rd one in the series though!

Fortuity · Today 10:56

To be clear, OP, are you saying that he has seen your private diary? Or that he has kept a similarly detailed record of the "very specific arguments, dynamics, and timelines"?

Fait point, most people would have read it back, thought “what a tool I was and what did I ever see in that eejit” 🤣

ThatshallotBaby · Today 11:11

@KeepOnCleaning I think I understand a bit what you mean. It makes you realise how differently we all perceive each other, and what is life defining for one person is not necessarily the same for the other. It’s an odd feeling to have on private,
let alone seeing it in the world, and I hope you are ok.

KeepOnCleaning · Today 11:17

@FancyPantsThatArentThatFancy I am specifically addressing this, because your assumption is entirely wrong: I haven’t even watched the show yet. It is a subtitled, foreign-language production that I only discovered existed a few hours ago after looking up his career.
The physical diaries in front of me were written in real-time in 1995 and 1996, decades before this series was ever conceived or broadcast. I am not 'working backwards' to match anything. The uncanny parallels are right there in the public themes of his career.
I came here to process a very sudden, surreal psychological jolt in total anonymity, not to debate the veracity of my own life history with strangers. I don't have anything to prove here.

Are you saying that your boyfriend was identified by name in an online interview about porn addiction, and/or appeared on camera? Why?

EX boyfriend 😁

Yeah, he was the one doing the interview, he publicised it on his Facebook page and everything 🤣 Pretty humiliating for his poor wife, but it's the sort of thing some evangelical Christians do - "how God changed my life" etc.

But you brought the nostalgia on yourself by reading your diary anway?

I don't see the difference.

Hmmm, this is a lot of insight for someone who claims they haven’t watched the show:

“and I was shocked to discover that one of his major, internationally broadcast TV drama series relies directly on the exact, highly specific relationship dynamics, conversations, and emotional conflicts we shared, even down to naming a core character after my husband”

Maybe stop digging op 😉

Ah, gotcha. I was wondering why someone would do that to themselves, but if the Holy Spirit inspired him to do it, then that’s of course an entirely different matter. Bizarre and exposing for you, though!
