Discovered I was a creative 'muse' for an old flame 30 years ago. Feeling completely thrown

I recently uncovered my university diaries from the mid-1990s and have been completely thrown by what I found when reading my contemporary self. Back then, while navigating a difficult long-distance relationship with the man who is now my husband of 24 years, I had a brief, incredibly intense, and angsty six-month affair with a co-worker. He was an international student, deeply introspective, and far more worldly than me. I always assumed I was just a passing, conventional interlude in his life and that he’d forgotten me. However, on finding my diaries, out of curiosity I looked up his adult career - he became a successful screenwriter and director - and I was shocked to discover that one of his major, internationally broadcast TV drama series relies directly on the exact, highly specific relationship dynamics, conversations, and emotional conflicts we shared, even down to naming a core character after my husband. I am happily married and have no intention of disrupting my real life, but processing the sudden realisation that I was a defining creative muse for a successful television production decades ago has reopened a closed compartment in my mind. I am struggling with a surreal wave of nostalgia and really need a space to process these feelings, as I can't talk about this with anyone in my real life.

I would say that forbidden young love is a remarkably uniform experience. Discussion topics and emotional tension are similar, especially if both are intelligent and well educated. I found it surprising how familiar the relationship in Mill in the Floss felt! So whilst you may have been his muse, you're in no way unique and those experiences could be reflecting countless lovers. Sorry to tell you you're ordinary!

Agree, there’s a Barbara Vine novel that exactly describes a very strange time in my life. I remember reading it when I was going through the experience and being almost certain that an author I’d never met somehow knew everything about me.

It's always interesting to me that people think MN is anonymous. This is the kind of thread HQ will post on their Facebook page and which will likely be picked up by lurking journalists.

Everyone imagines their inner thoughts and "conflicts" are unique, but they're not. He'll have used a bit from all his relationships, and have had similar issues with all his other girlfriends because a) that's just how humans are and b) he's bringing his own issues into every relationship .

You're just recognising the hits and ignoring all the misses because our brains are wired for pattern recognition. I wouldn't read anything into it.

Summeriscumin · Today 12:52

I think I know how you feel. I'm very old now but was at university in the early 70s and made a lot of good funny supportive friends of both sexes. I was already seeing he who became DH so there was never any romantic interest for me in any of the men in our friendship group.

We all gradually scattered to the winds lost touch apart for a couple of female friends. One of these sent me a poetry anthology about 20 years ago with a bookmark. It was written by one of the men in our group and was obviously about me. I have a very distinctive name and he wrote the poem to a derivative of that name.

It was about youthful angst and unrequited love. It described my looks and a few places and it was unmistakable.

I didn't do anything about it but felt a bit sad for him. I haven't looked him up, there didn't seem to be any point but I'm glad his memories were good in that I was never cruel to him. I was totally unaware.

Wildgoat · Today 12:56

Is it not more likely he has simply done some work based on that experience, and he draws on life experiences rather than you’re his defining muse?

Shedmistress · Today 12:59

One of my exes still writes songs about me and I've not seen him since 1997. I see them appear on friends' timelines, the last one was literally my name slightly changed!

I mean dude. Get over it.

overnightangel · Today 13:01

What was the casting like? Did he/the producers cast some one who looked like your 21 year old self at all? And was it a flattering/unflattering comparison? Did she have any mannerisms you’d recognise in yourself ?

Right. It was only 6 months, a lifetime ago. I get that OP really wants to believe she's his special muse he was never able to forget, but - no.

She was literally poring over her old memories herself, and then went hunting for him, filled with melancholy longing, and now she's mistaking pattern recognition and standard life experiences for unrequited angst.

A brisk walk in the sunshine generally fixes these sorts of flights of fancy.

I think it’s highly unlikely that MUMSNETTER RECOGNISES YOUTHFUL ROMANCE BUT WITH FICTIONALISED PLOT, SETTING, PROFESSIONS ETC IN SUBTITLED OVERSEAS DRAMA is going to make the Daily Mail.

No, I think you’ll find trolls, creative writing wannabes and AI bots ruin MN. I’ll post whatever I want thanks, maybe stop trying to police and censor others?

Or maybe read the MN guidelines.

There are a couple of Frasier episodes where Diane is the guest star that give this energy.

That's exactly why I'm being so vague about details and not saying why I know it's not just the angst if forbidden young love

I think I understand OP. That it is making you feel something but you dont really understand what it is. I think that intense relationships when we are young leave memories deeply embedded in our brains because it's the first time having those feelings and experiences. Mostly the memories stay hidden unless brought back to life by seeing the person, hearing about them or re-reading a diary etc. It has happened to me and it feels very discombobulating, as the buried memories came to the surface much more sharply than I would have expected.

My first proper boyfriend (lost virginity to, had an intense but mainly long distance relationship) became a non fiction author long after we lost touch. It felt strange to read reviews of his books in the Guardian. The subject matter of one of his books was the place we met, which he was visiting for the first time. I was very curious but deliberately did not buy/read the book. If I'm mentioned in it even in an anonymised way, i think I'll feel disturbed but I can't explain why. If I'm not in it then I think I'll feel slightly annoyed but again I can't explain why.

Sorry for waffling on but I think your feelings are normal and you need to sit with them for a little while, then push them back into your memories where they belong. As you say it's not as if anyone else will recognise you in the fictional tale.

I agree with this.
I know someone with a similar experience, it was unsettling. I suppose it slightly reframes things ? Sometimes we mean more to someone than we ever know, so if you find out that somebody you were close to has given a lot of thought to you and how you were as a younger person, it might make you feel slightly differently about your relationship.

towhoknowswhere · Today 13:31

I’m a very normal 55 year old woman who has had 4 albums written about her, one of which was very successful.

It makes my toes curl when I listen to any of the songs as they are so obviously about our intense, in our 20s relationship 😳

I could see them going with "Mumsnetter thinks she's inspiration for TV show". Regardless, it was more about risking getting recognised as she's on about not wanting to talk about this in real life.

Well, I don’t disagree, but I think most of us encounter this at some point, though it’s more usual to just re-encounter someone from the past and find out about it that way. But if you’re around a writer, you are likely to figure somewhere in their work, whether it’s your doomed romance with a co-worker when you both worked as Disneyland Paris characters, the way you only bite your nails when you’re in a relationship, or a thing you said in 1998 and don’t even remember.

I had a similar situation. My good friend is a playwright on a small level. I was invited to see a performance of one of his plays that had been selected for a drama festival. Very bizarre to hear an actress speaking some of my catchphrases and even direct quotes . But yes , that is what the best writers do , they draw on their experiences and their own lives . The reason these are commercially successful is that many people can relate to certain situations and it is a well written story .

Embrace it and swan around like a literary muse in dramatic cloaks .

But there’s literally nothing identifying in any of this. We don’t know the auteur, the series, the language it was made in, or how thoroughly tweaked the details are (the OP suggests unrecognisably). Many of us had angsty stuff going on when we were in LD relationships By the sound of it, you’d have to be the OP to recognise any of it.

It would have to be I RECOGNISED MYSELF IN CONNELL IN NORMAL PEOPLE SAYS CHAIN-WEARING MUMSNETTER or something to be worth a story.

I'm not expecting anyone to. I've given extremely vague details and said it's a foreign language TV series. The odds of anyone guessing I'd say are zero to none! I just needed to get it off my chest and I can't do that in real life.
