I get it. You don't drink. But please shut up about it

A friend gave up drinking earlier this year. That's fine and completely her decision.

I rarely drink, and honestly get 'drunk' maybe twice a year - and by drunk I mean just quite tipsy, not Drunk with a capital D. Due to health reasons, I didn't drink at all for five years, and it's only the last two I've started drinking occasionally when out / at a party.

We're off to a mutual friends party in a few weeks. I plan to have a few drinks. The friend has already started with the sanctimonious "you'd enjoy it so much more if sober", people don't need to drink to have fun, you should try not drinking etc etc.

How do I politely tell her to shut the fuck up. Yes, I don't HAVE to drink, but I'm choosing to. I like occasionally getting a bit tipsy.

Tell her you’ll enjoy it much more with a few drinks as it will make it easier to tune out her nagging.

Or say that it’s your choice to have a few drinks occasionally just as it’s her choice not to drink and that you’ll agree not to push drink on her if she’ll agree not to push not drinking on you.

I have a vegan sister who is like this. I don't drink (because I'm a raging alcoholic given the chance) but a lot of people don't even know that because I never mention it, it's boring.

People who go on and on about anything like that are insufferable. (See also my ex-smoker mother, who reckons it's harder to quit than heroin, despite never having done heroin.)

Anon9898 · 17/10/2026 16:52

I would say probably, but drinking helps me put up with you all night.

I do have a friend who quit smoking and heroin and he would agree with your MIL on this. But it's because heroin isn't sold in every street corner!

I don't drink and I agree with you. I encourage my husband not to drink because he forgets that it upsets his stomach (and then spends the next few days in discomfort) but I'd never comment on anyone's choice to drink otherwise.

Yeah, nothing worse than people who try to avoid unnecessary killing. Bastards.

DH and I don't drink alcohol. I gave up 2 years ago, and him 7 years ago. I never mention it to anyone and just do my own thing...,

But I find the opposite. People who drink and like to get merry (and even pissed) seem to have a HUGE problem with DH and I not drinking, and bang on about it, as if they're offended by it.

I have to say though, when DH gave up, he did used to comment about me drinking, and make 'you are such a lush LOL' type comments when I dared to have a second glass of wine, and used to make 'jokes' in front of neighbours about how I enjoyed being wired to a drip that fed whiskey directly to my veins. 🙄 It pissed me off as I wasn't even a big drinker really. I kept telling him to shut the fuck up, and actually waited for him to go to bed when I wanted a glass of wine, as I got sick of the comments.

Then I stopped for health reasons, the fact I felt shit every morning if I had been drinking, and because of the soaring costs.

So yeah, some people can be annoying. I'm not though. I never mention it. It's others who seem to have a problem with me not drinking alcohol lol!

Your mum sounds hilarious 😄

I stopped drinking to lose weight…honest to god the three times I’ve been out with people drinking were painful. I was bored stiff and tired way too early in the evening, and everyone else was having so much fun.

I can’t wait to get back on it…probably another 12 months to go (5 done so far). I don’t get drunk but merry and that’s enough for me.

People that dont drink
Vegans
Naturally thin people

The worst

Vegans and no drinkers make a choice...
Leave the naturally thin people alone, we didn't choose to be thin.

If the christmas drinking thread is anything to go by, posters will be along shortly to agree with your sanctimonious friend.

I side surely you can go 1 day without on that post and I am far from tee total. I get drunk most weekends. OP is talking about a friend giving up entirely, not just going a single day without.

Skinny people are fine. It's the competitive under eaters that like to comment on HOW MUCH everyone else is eating that are grrrr

Sick of you lot, always banging on about 'i eat so much but never put on weight, gosh its so tough' !!

Munching bourbon creams in my face when I'm on the lettuce

😡😡😡😡😡

(I am being lighthearted ofc! 😄 x)

RustyBear · 17/10/2026 17:10

Just as annoying the other way round, when you get told you can’t really enjoy a party if you don’t have a drink.

Exactly. Totally unnecessary comment about people who are naturally thin.

Gateappreciation · 17/10/2026 17:14

Tell her she’s driving then, which will mean you can have a few drinks.

(And I also think she’s trying to justify it to herself ).

Yeah, nothing worse than people who try to avoid unnecessary killing. Bastards.

But this thread is about people who proselytise about it?

Most people are tolerant of other people’s personal choices; many of us are actually interested in different lifestyles and might even want to ask questions about those choices.

But the number of people I know who welcome being preached to (and possibly judged) by one-track enthusiasts who have either opted into or given up something, whatever the fuck it may be, is precisely zero.

SnowflakesandSlippers · 17/10/2026 17:23

I don't drink either as I have a thing about the smell, however I don't really bring it up, I just offer to drive so my friends can enjoy what they want to.

GlitteryRainbow · 17/10/2026 17:23

Boomer55 · 17/10/2026 16:19

Yes. Reformed drinkers are like some vegans - feel they have to tell everyone 🙄🙄🙄

We’re not all like that. Some of us chose not to drink but if others do then that’s their choice and you just let them get on with it. Unless they are about to drive then I might say something as that’s putting others lives at risk.

What a nasty post.

If you're naturally thin, you have no more say over that than if you're naturally fat.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/10/2026 17:30

I don’t drink and I’m hoping I’m not like this 😂. I’m sure I’m not and I can party with pissed people as much as the next person but I would say I need to go home a bit sooner than then. Which I do without going on about it

Pallisers · 17/10/2026 17:35

Just say it to her - Susan I'm delighted you don't drink anymore as you seem so much happier but I don't have any issues with drink myself so could you not constantly go on about it to me.
