I get it. You don't drink. But please shut up about it

A friend gave up drinking earlier this year. That's fine and completely her decision.

I rarely drink, and honestly get 'drunk' maybe twice a year - and by drunk I mean just quite tipsy, not Drunk with a capital D. Due to health reasons, I didn't drink at all for five years, and it's only the last two I've started drinking occasionally when out / at a party.

We're off to a mutual friends party in a few weeks. I plan to have a few drinks. The friend has already started with the sanctimonious "you'd enjoy it so much more if sober", people don't need to drink to have fun, you should try not drinking etc etc.

How do I politely tell her to shut the fuck up. Yes, I don't HAVE to drink, but I'm choosing to. I like occasionally getting a bit tipsy.

Yes. Reformed drinkers are like some vegans - feel they have to tell everyone 🙄🙄🙄

“Friend I rarely drink, I went five years without drinking so I know what it’s like to not drink, I want to have a few drinks as it’s not often I do”

Shloopie · 17/10/2026 16:20

If you're longstanding friends where anything goes (within reason) you can actually just say 'aww, please shut the fuck up, Sophie'.

BMW58 · 17/10/2026 16:21

"FFS change the record - you're getting on my wick with this"

If the christmas drinking thread is anything to go by, posters will be along shortly to agree with your sanctimonious friend.

I don’t drink but I couldn’t care less if someone else wants to. It’s just really boring when drunk people want me to have a drink and bang on and on trying to get me to have alcohol. No thank you. I’m perfectly happy with a soft drink 🤷‍♀️

Never any pressure from me to have a drink as more often than not I'm not drinking anyway.

And maybe it's just who I socialise with, but even when not drinking I've never felt any pressure to have a drink!

That is what prompted me to post this!

Become friends in last ten years. Not super close or besties, but decent friends. Not something I could actually tell to shut the fuck up!

I think people who give up drinking for whatever reason bang on about it partly to convince themselves about it. You know how when you're being "good" for a few weeks before your holidays so your bikini will fit? "Yeah, no, its fine, I don't want an eclair/sticky toffee pudding/magnum". She's maybe worried she'll weaken, cave and have a large wine. 🍷

You're allowed to be annoyed by someone's actions/words AND you're allowed to tell them they're pissing you off!

Or just bin off the "friendship" if you can't do that.

Omg I thought it was just me that got annoyed by this!!! So happy to know there’s more out there.

WishItHadBeenMe · 17/10/2026 16:41

I was just about to say, maybe stop going out with her if she’s that annoying. Life’s too short.

Dandeloosha · 17/10/2026 16:41

Just say, ‘Well I, for one, am really looking forward to a huge glass of red wine, swiftly followed by another one. You can drink whatever you like!’

Then more of a pointed but jokey 'message received, now let me enjoy my spicy margs in peace!'

Please try, for us drinkers sakes.
My DIL is a rabid anti drinker. She used to do the same to me until I pointed out that I am her MIL, I am a grownup, I know when ive had enough and to back off.
It didn't work 😕

Yeah, nothing worse than people who try to avoid unnecessary killing. Bastards.

Shloopie · 17/10/2026 16:44

People who are evangelical about any topic are such a bore!

JellyOnMyShoe · 17/10/2026 16:45

I went tee total several years ago, but never would I dream of telling other people not to have a drink.

How tiresome.

I'm off to look at the Christmas drinking thread....now!!!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/10/2026 16:45

What on earth do these people get out of bragging about a completely personal choice they've made?

I used to eat crisps and now I don't.
I never mention it because its a completely boring fact for myself to acknowledge, let alone anyone else.

Maybe have a drink first to soften the sheer batshitness of some of the posts!

bababamama · 17/10/2026 16:48

As long as you don’t expect lifts from your non drinking friend, when I couldn’t drink for medication reasons I got fed up with the assumption I’d drive and drop off my friends afterwards all pretty tipsy, when I lived closer to the city centre than them
