well that's part of it, which I was trying to convey last as meta-critique of the concept of religion itself,
before someone wanting to try and entrap me on specifics of one aspect of my comment, relating to one religion and then Yo808 decided to derail the discussion
religion came about because humans were trying to make sense of the scary world around them - who was responsible for lightning, drought, famine, earthquakes, meter impacts, the stars and moon?
they were asking the wrong question, from an ego-centric standpoint,
the question was clearly what and why? the answer to those two is physics, chemistry, biology in combination with pure chance
The fact that the universe came into existence because of a unique set of circumstances, combined with the fact that evolved planetary life in the universe is exceedingly rare should not be an existential threat to belief systems, but an opportunity to appreciate and take care of the planet we have. Why ? because the Drake Equation and latest theories around the Great Filter indicate there's likely not many other places out there to move to when we fuck this one up.
Religion was a coping mechanism, which also promised immortality - understandable after seeing one your tribe being eaten by a sabre tooth, or choosing to burn their body in a ceremony after death in battle.
It had the basis of being a moral and ethical guide, especially to tame the chaos of the first blush of civilisation, but instead it became a tool for power, control, land acquisition, dogma. Religion is essentially run as a business, except people in it are unable to mind their own
The fact that Socrates was killed because he asked challenging questions of his students and not accepting the gods of the times is a frightening rejection of science in favour of retaining an iron-fist on dogma... which is often the spark behind war and conquest
