Would you buy a house that has two showers and no bath?

I'd like to get rid of our bath and install a shower cubicle which would free up some much needed storage space in our small family bathroom.

No one in our household has had a bath in years and I feel a shower cubicle would work better for us (me and two adult DC).

The master bedroom already has a small en-suite shower room which DH uses.

But I'm concerned no bath could put people off buying when we sell up in a few years time (5+ years).

Would you be happy buying a house with no bath?

We bought a house when the children were small and it didn’t really have a proper bath .
It was a very short bath , only kids fitted in it .
Back then it was very difficult and very competitive to buy a family home in the area we wanted .
After a while we put a proper bath in ..then years later did the entire bathroom

OffTheMap · 14/10/2026 18:32

I would.
I never have a bath
And prefer to keep hot water bills down.

Kaybee50 · 14/10/2026 18:34

Surely any prospective buyer would put a bath back in if they wanted one / loved your house? I find it bizarre that this is a deal breaker for some people.

Nearly at the end of completly renovating our house, we have installed a total of two shower rooms, a bathroom and two cloakrooms. It will be going on the market once it is completed and I wouldn’t have considered not having a bathroom in the house as it reduces the pool of buyers who would potentially be interested in buying.

Also why are people referring to rooms without a bath and only a shower in it as bathrooms, they are shower rooms.

StickyToffeePuddingAndIceCream321 · 14/10/2026 18:35

Our current house didnt have a bath, but had there been something else similar with a bath on the market at the time we would have bought that, but we were in a hurry to move as I was pregnant so we couldn't wait for something else. We have been meaning to sort putting the bath back for 5 years (the shower is a massive thing and you could actually fit both a bath and shower if you just had a single cubicle), we will have to rip up the entire bathroom to do it though as the entire thing is tiled, it's going to be expensive to sort. We are moving in the next 18 months and are going to have to suck it up having it done. There is 0 chance I would buy another house without a bath again, it just doesnt work with small children and I love a bath myself besides.

saffy2 · 14/10/2026 18:35

I would, and I’d just put one in. We took the bath out of our family bathroom and put one in an en suite we made. So now we have a walk in shower and a bath. And we are going to put in a wc downstairs when funds allow.
if I didn’t have the means to put one in then I probably wouldn’t buy it. But, I’m the only one in our house who uses the bath apart from the baby, who will soon grow out of it too I assume.

jmh740 · 14/10/2026 18:36

We moved about 5 years ago. Personally I love a bath and wouldn't have look at a house without a bath.

envbeckyc · 14/10/2026 18:37

To be honest when we bought our house the first thing we did was to replace the bath, sink and toilet to a more modern one.

It’s not all that expensive if you are keeping the original position of the plumbing.

We have two shower rooms and a bathroom with a showerover the bath… but no one has used a bath in years…not even my children from about the age of 5.

You can buy pop up bathtubs for small children that go in showers if needed…

Yes! We have a huge walk in luxury shower and it’s amazing 🤩

I absolutely despise baths - they make me feel uncomfortably hot and drained and tired. Horrible things.

But a gorgeous all singing all dancing shower is wonderful

Mcoco · 14/10/2026 18:38

We got rid of our bath years ago OP and have 2 showers instead. I was worried about the same thing but so happy we got rid of our bath we all prefer showers.

Lovingmynewlifestyle · 14/10/2026 18:41

An interesting post. I am currently on holiday and the shower is amazing. I want to rip out my bath and have this size shower. My daughter would hate me! as she has a bath more times than a shower each week. When I was pregnant a bath was wonderful.
I personally think you should do what suits your family now and not think of the future, when you may or may not sell your house.

A long time ago my brother had difficulty selling his house because the " bathroom" only had a shower not a bath, things may have changed now. Also, nothing better than soaking tired muscles in a hot bath ...sometimes a shower is too much hard work and just doesn't do it the same as a bath !

gullgal · 14/10/2026 18:43

I got rid of my bath. I don't think it will affect the resale at all

Sadcafe · 14/10/2026 18:44

Definitely wouldn’t buy a house with no bath , don’t particularly enjoy showers, just my preference, but I do think lots of people still expect a bath in a house. If your not planning on moving, put a shower in instead but be aware it might possibly affect selling

COOMACHEO · 14/10/2026 18:44

Put in walk in bath with shower? The bath with the door?

SaySomethingMan · 14/10/2026 18:46

localnotail · 13/10/2026 13:25

I honestly don't think you can really clean yourself using just shower. Unless you use steam room/ sauna. How do you get all that oil, grime and old skin off without soaking? It's kind of gross.

Oh dear. Sounds like someone needs to be taught how to bathe properly.
Most people i know use a washcloth or loofah then lather up and wash all over them rinse. How would soaking get rid of dirt without proper washing?

That is gross.

User573359 · 14/10/2026 18:50

Urgh, I really want to do the same but last time someone asked this all the answers were that it definitely puts people off. I do like a bath, but our bathroom is so tiny, a shower would be so much more practical for us. I think I'm going to go for it. It does surprise me how many people say they wouldn't buy though when it isn't an expensive thing to change.

It would be costly (plumbing, retiling etc) so if the house is already at the top of their budget, the extra may not be possible.

Some people aren't able to visualise changes. I'm always amazed by how people can't visualise how a house can be moved around but some people can't. OP is proposing to create a cupboard in the space, removing the cupboard may put people like this off.

Some people don't want to do work and if the house is otherwise in finished condition this would be a deal breaker.

I don't really understand why people who don't intend to move in the next 3-5 years really care about resale. Surely having a house that works for you is a much better option?

We've divided rooms, put up stud walls and made some 'interesting' (to others) choices with our house. They'll likely put off some buyers - but they work for us, the people actually living in the house and I don't care whether someone theoretical future buyer likes it or not!

So take out the damn bath!

also a very old person who cannot get in or out of a bath. Generally fighting fit in other ways but old knee injuries. I know ALL about bath aids and am never using one.

Edited

Knee problems too, having a new one soon, but at the moment I can get in and out of the bath, it's not pretty but it works!

ShiraShira · 14/10/2026 19:04

We almost didn’t buy our house because there isn’t a bath! In the end we did buy it and moved in two months ago, but we are planning to put a bath in at some point. I believe it’s a dealbreaker for many people when buying, but there will probably be lots of replies here from people saying they prefer showers! I do miss being able to have a long soak in the bath if I’m tired, stressed, achey or unwell, period cramps etc. I personally think there’s nothing like a lovely hot bath in those situations! But it’s also great having a reliable shower for everyday use, which our old house didn’t have, we just had a crappy shower spray over the bath that never worked very well.

OrangeSlices998 · 14/10/2026 19:05

You have to live in your house now, why make a decision based on a potential future sale? Do what you want to your house now. If I saw a house that was perfect but had no bath (I have young kids so would need a bath) I would still buy it I’d just get the bath put in myself

Lilyspickled · 14/10/2026 19:06

I rented my flat because it didn’t have a bath.
i have a bad back and knees, so a bath is a non starter for me.

RubyHiker · 14/10/2026 19:07

Just bought a house and a bath was high enough on the list of things I wanted/needed. But I also have small children and love a bath myself.

I wouldn't have bought a house without if I thought I would need to faff about installing one unless the whole bathroom needed redone

alcovecupboards · 14/10/2026 19:12

We've got three bathrooms - only one with an actual bath. It's barely used. My son uses it to do magnesium soaks occasionally, and we use it to wash the dogs but that's it. If I had space in my utility room I'd have a built-in dog wash and do away with the bath entirely.
