Would you buy a house that has two showers and no bath?

I'd like to get rid of our bath and install a shower cubicle which would free up some much needed storage space in our small family bathroom.

No one in our household has had a bath in years and I feel a shower cubicle would work better for us (me and two adult DC).

The master bedroom already has a small en-suite shower room which DH uses.

But I'm concerned no bath could put people off buying when we sell up in a few years time (5+ years).

Would you be happy buying a house with no bath?

If you’re planning on selling in the next few years I’d keep a bath. I’m assuming it’s a young family house so likely to have small kids wanting a bath?

Gingerbreadseasoniscoming · Yesterday 11:57

I'd want a bath if it's a family house.

We sold our 3 bed detached last year to a young couple with a baby, FTBs. It had a shower in the en suite and a large walk in shower in the main bathroom. Both very modern fairly recent additions. Downstairs WC too.
It didn’t put them off but I know some might prefer a bath.

I wouldn’t even rent a place without a bath

Nor me. I take a nightly bath, invariably. It bothers me that (understandably) fewer and fewer hotels have baths.

I would prefer to have a bath, if I wanted a family house for young children. If the house was otherwise amazing I would buy it and put a bath back in. But if there were a lot of similar houses on the market that already have a bath, I'd buy one of those instead. So really it depends how much competition from other comparable houses there's likely to be when you sell.

Pallaska · Yesterday 12:01

In five years, if the market requires it, you can install a bath. Live your life!

Mirrorlolo · Yesterday 12:01

No I would not buy a house without a bath

Oleamme · Yesterday 12:01

It would put me off and if there was another house that had a bath in the area I'd opt for that one. But it's inexpensive to put a bath back in so if it was the only house that ticked other boxes then it wouldn't stop me. I use our bath for quite a few household things (eg soaking fabrics and cleaning toys) so it would always be useful for us regardless of children's ages.

fairislecable · Yesterday 12:02

I never use our bath just the over bath shower so it wouldn’t bother me.

If you remove the bath you will have a minimum of 5 years living the way you want in your home.

Remove the bath and IF you decide to sell then think about bath v shower many years down the line.

TheBayHorse · Yesterday 12:03

I like baths and have them fairly often. If everything else about the house was right I'd probably buy it and put a bath back in.

BurntBroccoli · Yesterday 12:03

Yes I would. I never have baths and it would be nice to have a large shower instead!

ThaneOfGlamis · Yesterday 12:05

If there was room to put a bath in, I would be fine with it.

SquigglePigs · Yesterday 12:05

I would have (actually did) when we were younger and it was just DH and I. Now with DD I wouldn't as she likes a bath. Most people with small children would want a bath so it depends who you expect your house to appeal to.

Dragonscaledaisy · Yesterday 12:06

I would expect a bath and large walk in shower. If there was space to rip out the existing bathroom and install a bath, I might consider it. Definitely no over bath shower.

This! No point keeping a bath for imaginary future buyers who may or may not want one. Easy enough to re-install if you’re convinced it will make the house more sale-able.

Justploddingonandon · Yesterday 12:07

I love baths and would want one, but if the house was otherwise perfect I'd probably still buy it so long as there was space to put one in (ideally without having to rip out the whole bathroom)

Neverstopwondering · Yesterday 12:08

No, I need a bath.

I know one of my adult son's out of the three will only rent a flat with a bath, so would be the same buying a house.

EventuallyDiscussed · Yesterday 12:10

So long as you had left space to put a bath back again and not done anything like move the basin next to the shower it would be OK. I wouldn't want to live in a house without a bath and would always opt for shower over bath rather than walk-in shower to avoid that scenario.

Alondra · Yesterday 12:16

I wouldn't have a problem with no bath if we had 2 bathrooms with showers.

As housing become less spacious because square meters are becoming more expensive, the emphasis is on the number of bathrooms with showers. Baths take too much space.

I have 3 bathrooms, the main one with a bath we've never used since we renovated it 3 years ago.

EndofDaze · Yesterday 12:19

We’ve just sold our 5 bed , 3 bathroom house. Only showers fitted. Going family buying. No mention on lack of bath being a problem. House was only on market 10 weeks.

JuliaAgrippina · Yesterday 12:20

It put us off when we had young kids and looking at houses - fair few just had showers- because it would have meant we'd have had to put one in.

Now it wouldn't bother us at all.

So if you'd likely to be selling to family market in next five years I'd keep the bath - if it's a wider appeal property or you are likely to be there longer I'd do what is best now.

ThePineappleSeahorse · Yesterday 12:20

I would yes and I sold a house to a family last year with 2 showers and no bath. I detest baths so it wouldn’t put me off.

Puhpuhpuhpuh · Yesterday 12:21

I would definitely want a bath.

Topseyt123 · Yesterday 12:26

It wouldn't put me off at all. I have showers rather than baths anyway and have done for decades.

My shower is an over the bath one and that is all that I use my bath for. I might yet get my bathroom redesiged and rejigged so that the bath is removed in favour of a walk-in shower because I think that will be easier as I get older anyway. I'm also toying with the idea of whether or not my downstairs toilet could be adapted to also be a shower room (while still keeping a toilet in there too). Just as a bit of future proofing in case the stairs become too much as I age.

So I think there are plenty of people who would buy such a property, as well as some who wouldn't.
