Would you buy a house that has two showers and no bath?

I'd like to get rid of our bath and install a shower cubicle which would free up some much needed storage space in our small family bathroom.

No one in our household has had a bath in years and I feel a shower cubicle would work better for us (me and two adult DC).

The master bedroom already has a small en-suite shower room which DH uses.

But I'm concerned no bath could put people off buying when we sell up in a few years time (5+ years).

Would you be happy buying a house with no bath?

I removed our bath and had a large walk in shower installed when I bought my house. I sold it last year, no one was bothered about there not being a bath!

Possibly nobody bothered. But what you don’t know is whether anybody decided not to even view because there was no bath.

Exactly. I remember writing off two houses without viewing at one point because they didn’t have a bath. I wasn’t exactly flush at the time and couldn’t afford to install one.

It wouldn’t bother me, I don’t like baths. I have an en-suite and a family bathroom but don’t use the bath. If I had young children I might think otherwise though.

If I liked the house enough I'd still buy it and install one straight away. I would try to negotiate on price though as it would be a few thousand to install.

But would it bother you that it might impact on a future sale?

For example l am not superstitious at all, but l would hesitate in buying a house that was number 13, because it might be more difficult to sell. Partly because some people are superstitious and partly because some would think along similar lines to me.

Malasana · 15/10/2026 10:23

I wouldn’t be put off. I don’t have a bath and bought it like this.

BubblingBobbling · 15/10/2026 10:24

We are definitely going for the shower now. If and when we do decide to sell (it all hangs on some personal circumstances) and feedback states people are put off due to no bath we will just put one back in.

It seems pointless to keep or replace a bath that is getting old and tatty and no one has used in at least 10 years and highly unlikely to go back to wanting to use one.

BubblingBobbling If this is not your forever home and have a selling plan, then keep the bath

I would love it. We bought our first house with no bath, and had to modernise the bathroom but we certainly didn't have one put in. Hate them. Never use them and they're dust gatherers.

I've been wondering the same thing, interesting that this thread has filled 13 pages! A lot of opinions on it clearly. We have one small bathroom with a shower over the bath and I'd like to replace it with a walk in shower when the kids are older (currently only the youngest uses it) so I guess if I was looking to buy I would prioritise a decent shower. I can't imagine writing off an otherwise great house over something fairly easy to change.

To be fair no bath would put me off at the kids current age, in a few years it wouldn’t be problem. But a shower that was only over a bath would put me off too and when my kids are older it would put me off a lot more than no bath. If you can’t have both a bath and separate shower then I don’t think it’s a bad call to just go for a shower.

Seems sensible - and I'm another who did walk away from some houses with no baths with first purchase because we had pre-school kids and house buying was going to take all the money and we'd had enough stress as well.

There will be many who are not bothered by lack of bath or can put in a bath and worry less or as you say it's it comes up as an issue you can put one back in.

My parents had a walk in huge shower made the room so much more usable for them.

If you aren't even sure about if or when selling makes sense to do updates that suit those living there now.

Squirrel60 · 15/10/2026 14:36

I would. I absolutely HATE baths- squashed up in a tiny space, with hardly any room to move; give me showers each and every time!

Rockpunkdisco · 15/10/2026 18:41

If I really liked the house I would but with the intention of reinstalling a bath.

theyregonnaknow · 15/10/2026 20:38

We’ve just done this!

Two bathrooms, one of them is a small shower room and the main bathroom which is large, had a bath that never got used apart from the dog after muddy walks. Complete waste of space.

We’ve had a whole new high spec bathroom and installed a huge walk in shower. Best decision ever.

We also plan to sell up in 3ish years and when we buy our next house I’d do it again.

btw, it doesn’t reduce the value of your house it just reduces the pool of buyers 😉 Do it!

This one is even better, has a lid. That's the one thing I don't like about baths, how quickly they become cold, the constant topping up is a bore to me.

I've never had a bath i've had to constantly top up 🤣 are you sure your water is heating up properly?

I'd keep the bath.

I'm.an extremely cold person, I can get into a very warm bath and find myself getting cold really quickly, even in summer time. Another reason why I don't like baths, I can never feel comfortable in them.

I get a lot colder with a shower. I’m cold the moment I step out of the shower.

I'm also a very cold person and showers are far cooler imo. I wonder if you are adding too much cold water. In a bath you are surrounded by the hot water and keeps you far warmer than a shower could.

Some people like baths some dont anyway, original point of the thread! But if i was selling a house with 2 bathrooms, id make sure one of them had a bath personally. I wouldnt buy a house without one.

Squirrelblanket · 17/10/2026 08:30

It wouldn't bother me but I'm aware I'm in the minority.

lilkitten · 17/10/2026 15:26

I personally only shower, and we have one bathroom with a bath and separate shower. I have two teens, one only baths and one only showers, DH only baths. Personally I wouldn't mind, but obviously half of our family would say no. I did struggle when they were little though, staying in accommodation with only a shower, and finding it harder to wash them.

I wouldn’t even rent a place without a bath

I currently rent somewhere that only has a shower and especially this time of year hate not having a bath.

RAPSMom · 24/10/2026 20:49

I’d want a bath….even though I struggle to get in…. My Niece’s husband took their bath out and replaced with just a shower…. A few years down the road… Shower out, bath back in with a shower over the bath….
