Would you buy a house that has two showers and no bath?

I'd like to get rid of our bath and install a shower cubicle which would free up some much needed storage space in our small family bathroom.

No one in our household has had a bath in years and I feel a shower cubicle would work better for us (me and two adult DC).

The master bedroom already has a small en-suite shower room which DH uses.

But I'm concerned no bath could put people off buying when we sell up in a few years time (5+ years).

Would you be happy buying a house with no bath?

Lots of old people do this because they can’t get in and out of baths safely. Any family wanting to buy such a house can see that it once had a bath and could have again. It’s a few thousand to change it back. Not a big deal.

JHITRM77 · 14/10/2026 19:16

Makes no difference, I can put a bath in easily

Studyunder · 14/10/2026 19:17

Absolutely. I don’t have baths. There’s never a perfect house when buying, so if I wanted a bath I’d put one in. You create your house how it suits you to live in, not someone who might buy it in years to come. It’s so much nicer to have a walk in shower and space to dry yourself. I always worry about people slipping if they’re climbing in and out a bath shower.
If you are ever selling, then it can be mentioned there’s space for a bath anyway.
Get your house you want it, it’s your life!

100%. I want to replace our bath and separate shower cubicle with a big walk in shower.

CherryViper · 14/10/2026 19:18

100%

DS is the only one of us that gets a bath.

I want to take our bath out and just have a shower.

VeronicaRaven · 14/10/2026 19:19

Absolutely, hate baths.

LoftyPlumLion · 14/10/2026 19:20

No I wouldn't because me and DP like a bath. Many people don't though and that's ok.

RandomUserName12345 · 14/10/2026 19:20

Yes. We don't need a bath. It's very low over things we want in a home.

WellyBellyBoo · 14/10/2026 19:23

Yes, but only if there was room for me to have a bath put back in.

caringcarer · 14/10/2026 19:24

I much prefer a shower and so does DH and teens. A bath is good for young DC but really teens are fine with a shower.

Zanatdy · 14/10/2026 19:26

It wouldn’t put me off as I rarely if ever have a bath. But my kids are adults now, it would have been more problematic when they were young.

MrMurphysComeuppance · 14/10/2026 19:26

Yes of course, if it was the right house in every other respect. I always want a bath in the house but I wouldn't turn down a great house for lack of a bath. I'd just refit one of the shower rooms to include one.

Pallisers · 14/10/2026 19:26

Yes I would but in similar circumstances I kept a bath in the family bathroom rather than put in a lovely walk-in shower purely for resale value.

saltyseaswimmer · 14/10/2026 19:29

Blimey never have I been more stuck by the subtle privilege in these boards - all these people who wouldn’t buy a house without a bath! In the leasehold flat market families who are lucky enough to be buying (and not stuck renting) are choosing between 1960s-80s asbestos internally or flammable cladding externally …

We did exactly this about 3 years ago - it’s so handy - easier for guests too. Not sure if it will sell on but have no plans on moving yet :-). Do what’s best for you - most people like adapting houses to suit themselves anyway!

CheekyOpalCat · 14/10/2026 19:37

I dont have a bath for the same reason. My Mam did not have one. It never stopped it selling. I would think if you wanted to buy a house you would change things and a bath is no big deal.

DiscoCherries · 14/10/2026 19:39

Couldn’t live without a bath, I have 1-2 a week. Some Epsom salts, lavender oil and my book and I’ll have the best sleeps of my week after it. So yes, it would put me off - obviously if I loved the house I could just redo the bathroom but I’d never live in a house without one. Even my old flat I made sure had a bath!

BotterMon · 14/10/2026 19:42

I'd buy it! Can't stand baths and have ripped out the 3 that were here. They are all put to good use as troughs in the horse's fields.

If people can't see past reinstalling a bath then they are a bit pathetic imo. It's not a big deal.

Jamie8888 · 14/10/2026 19:44

You can get baths that have a shower end to them I have had two in different houses both with small bathrooms , both were quality steel bays (german manufacture)

EmptyCan · 13/10/2026 12:00

Nor me. I take a nightly bath, invariably. It bothers me that (understandably) fewer and fewer hotels have baths.

Me too. I don't bathe daily and less so in summer but I want the option. I am a single woman too, but I have aches and pains that only baths cure (weight lifter!) and I find them much more relaxing than a shower. Why stand up when you can lie down? 😆

You could always re-install a bath before selling, OP? It's not so expensive most of the time.

BrotherOswin · 14/10/2026 19:44

@ThePineappleSeahorse Can I ask what age the child was? Thanks.

We've just removed the bath from our one bathroom which is very small anyway so it felt right to have a nice walk-in shower and it's suited my kids now aged almost 18 and 20.
There's always the possibility of creating a bathroom in our small attic room next to the main bedroom so I'd thought I can always put a bath in there if necessary, but this thread's made me realise that no parent of a small kid is likely to want to go up another level to bathe their kid maybe or would they? Should we have kept it on the floor with 2 beds ie first floor? You've got me thinking, OP, sorry not much help!
What I can tell you is that a family across the road from us, moved in last year and re-did the existing bathroom (which had a bath in it) and opted for no bath, just good shower with their one child. Their child was 6 when they moved in.
So I'm wondering, OP, if it might limit those with really young kids but by 6 or so they're perhaps able to shower by themselves or at least with guidance. I can't remember how it works with young kids, when they can do stuff!!

Skdkhvyvrhej · 14/10/2026 19:46

10 years ago yes. Now no. Love my bath on the odd occasion.

CissOff · 14/10/2026 19:48

Our main bathroom needs doing and I’m facing the same dilemma. None of us bath. I don’t think it’s been used beyond hosing down the dogs for the past 3 years. It’s just not something that appeals to any of us.

In saying that, I still struggle with removing it for the reason OP mentions. It seems such a waste of space though.

openended · 14/10/2026 20:00

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

Pallaska · 13/10/2026 12:01

In five years, if the market requires it, you can install a bath. Live your life!

Agreed. Don't put your life on hold for something that may or may not happen in 5 years time.
