Most heartbroken songs ever

I'm currently divorcing my husband. I've been strong and angry, but totally I'm just feeling heartbreakingly sad. I've tried some Taylor swift songs but they just aren't sad enough. Anyone got any recommendations for some songs I can just be utterly broken to for an hour before I sick it all back up and crack on. I've currently got hurt by Jonny cash on but it's not quite the vibe I want.

Outing my shocking taste in music… but give “end of the road” by Boyz2Men a try. That was the anthem of my first ever breakup (90s teen)

John Grant " It doesn't matter to him"

His lyrics are always good - deeply moving and raw and then suddenly dry humour.

Greg Puciato - Never Wanted That

Never throw off your halo
You won't be getting it back
Pitching stones from your cradle
Defensive on the attack
If your heart's still bleeding you're mine
I never wanted that
Every word kept breeding more lies
I never wanted that

Do we stay or can we go?
That's not for me to decide
Let it breathe so we can grow
Or else we get stuck in a fight
Have the strangest feeling I'm tired
I never wantеd that
And you found my dealings unkind
I never wantеd that

If you call and I'm not crying
Don't tell me I'm empty inside
I'm alone inside my castle where we tried
All the photographs that I took
They're driving me out of my mind
If you call and I'm not crying
Don't tell me I'm empty inside
I'm alone inside my castle where we tried

All the photographs that I took
They're driving me out of my mind
Out of my mind
Out of my mind
Out of my mind

If you call and I'm not crying
Don't tell me I'm empty inside
I'm entombed inside my castle where we died
If you call and I'm not crying
Don't tell me I'm empty inside
I'm alone inside my castle where we died
All the photographs that I took
They're driving me out of my mind
I'm entombed inside my castle where we died

I get the feeling he had a rough breakup. I think the first verse is fabulous. Defensiveness. Falling off a pedestal. Lies.

Sorry HRTFT but Ryan Adam’s’ ‘This house is not for sale’ gets me every single time……

Lifeomars · 15/10/2026 14:20

The whole of Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan. He wrote it while in the throes of his divorce from his first wife Sara and it is mix of rage, longing and nostalgia for the better days when love was new. "your'e a big girl now" makes me sob.

Letter to Hermione always gets me.

Same here and his much later song "strangers when we meet" especially the version with these lines:

"steely resolve is falling from me
My poor soul all bruised passivity
All your regrets ride roughshod over me"

Go the other way and do I am the Resurrection by Stone Roses and You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette . But if you still want melancholy there’s that All Saints one, I don’t remember name of that starts “A few questions that I need to know…” (Surely they meant answers?)

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 15/10/2026 14:44

Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and Damien Rice all have the kind of voices that make me cry every time.

Yesautumniscoming · 15/10/2026 14:45

Colourblind, Counting Crows 😥😥

Dozycuntlaters · 15/10/2026 14:49

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez. Written about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Such a beautiful song.

mamaof4losingmymind · 15/10/2026 15:01

Blood on the tracks album - Bob Dylan

Idiot Wind is my favourite 😆. I also love Most of the Time by Bob Dylan. A similar sentiment...

ABBA. The Winner takes it all. Sung with such emotion. Hang in there OP. It does get better ☺️

Yes, this is a good one, and One of Us.

Hurt sung by Johnny Cash always makes me cry.
Everybody hurts by REM
I know most of mumsnet hates Coldplay, but The Scientist is another that can make me cry.
@Smallestwomanthateverlived However, I think the songs that would make me cry the most would be ones that meant or reminded me of something during the relationship

beguilingeyes · 15/10/2026 16:18

In The Winter by Janis Ian is supreme for this.
'The days are ok...I watch the TV in the afternoons' then it get more depressing.

Peacoconut · 15/10/2026 16:33

My All - Mariah Carey

PercyMcTinselBud · 15/10/2026 16:39

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac is an entire album about separation.

notacooldad · 15/10/2026 18:05

Look for the woman by Scroobius pip.

Patsy Cline ‘She’s Got You’.

Won't Release Me - Fading Remains
Still Alone - Broken Violet
3am - Busted

Rootsinmydreamland · 15/10/2026 18:18

Have you tried Maroon by Taylor Swift? I also find Cornelia Street quite heartbreaking, in retrospect given how things ended with Joe!

PotatoFruit · 15/10/2026 18:19

I also came here to say Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album. "If you see her, say hello" is what I reckon won him the Nobel Prize.

PistachioTiramisu · 15/10/2026 18:25

Without You by Nillson
Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters (always makes my cry no matter what time of the year it is)
Time to say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Boccelli.

WestwardHo1 · 15/10/2026 18:28

Not read the thread so someone is bound to have said it, but after exH and I divorced I remember standing in the ABBA Voyage crowd with tears streaming down my face listening to The Winner Takes It All

GoldenRayOfSun · 15/10/2026 18:31

‘If You’re Looking For a Way Out’ by Odyssey always has me crying.

Yogabearmous · 15/10/2026 18:32

One day in your life , Michael Jackson.
