Most heartbroken songs ever

I'm currently divorcing my husband. I've been strong and angry, but totally I'm just feeling heartbreakingly sad. I've tried some Taylor swift songs but they just aren't sad enough. Anyone got any recommendations for some songs I can just be utterly broken to for an hour before I sick it all back up and crack on. I've currently got hurt by Jonny cash on but it's not quite the vibe I want.

Wild World by Cat Stevens is a tear jerker for me

and Something to Remember by Madonna

How can you mend a broken heart by Al Green
Nightingale Lane by Raye
Die with a smile by Bruno Mars & Lady GaGa

These will be my funeral songs

I think ABCDE by Gayle is cathartic. Not sad but angry. If I’ve have a difficult client i smile sweetly and am professional then play this when I get in the car very loudly.

Fascinating Aïda's "Don't Come Back". "Don't come back, For my heart is nowhere mended. Don't come back, And my arms are undefended. And I've almost grown accustomed, To the presence of your absence in my bed."

Endless love. Watch the old film
too it’s gut wrenching

The ultimate "You used me up and left me empty" song is Soul Mining by The The.

But be warned before you listen that it will hit hard.

Random321 · 11/10/2026 22:46

I ain't missing you at all - John Waite.

Lies in the chorus but truth in the verse, until some day, when you get over it, the chorus is actually true.

If you want a book recommendation then the woman destroyed by Simone de Beauvoir really got me. The title story really made me think about the heaviness of the past and how do you move out of that shadow

The Empty Bed by Mick Ronson

Written by the Bee Gees who wrote some cracking songs, especially lovey dovey ones.
someone upthread mentioned I Think I’d Better Leave Right Now by Will Young, which I love. I also give you And I Love You So by Perry Como

I know they wrote it, but it's the way Al sings it that makes it so heartbreaking.

Sad Cafe - Every Day Hurts
40+ years ago and it still hurts my heart when I hear this song

Thunder - a lover not a friend
Thunder - don't wait for me

@Cheesetoastiee I preferred the original Torn to Natalie Imbruglia's version, but she didn't do a bad job of it at all.

Song for Zula by Phosphorescent

Somebody Desperate by The National

Song for Zula is excellent. Maybe try Following by Chungking, Cherry Blossoms by Tindersticks, Cody by Mogwai, Salvation by Rae & Christian, Stampede by Jess Williamson, Galaxy of Emptiness by Beth Orton, Nature of a Language by Westerman.

When I was getting divorced and was having a bad day, I asked Alexa to play break up songs. I was expecting sad, weepy ones.

Alexa said, "Here's a playlist you might like. Better Off Without You."

She wasn't wrong. Made me feel much better.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/10/2026 23:23

I remembered some heartfelt Kate Bush songs about breakup. Google tells me they are

  • ”And So Is Love" (from The Red Shoes, 1993): A mature, melancholic look at the fading of romance, the realization that "life is sad and so is love," and the bittersweet acceptance of letting someone go.
  • "It Hurts Me (L'amour)" (B-side / unreleased track era): Explores the lingering sting of a past romance, moving on, and feeling old or discarded after a relationship collapses.
  • "Between a Man and a Woman" (from The Red Shoes, 1993).

If you could read my mind - Gordon Lightfoot.
River- Joni Mitchell
Sophia-Nerina Pallot
Romeo and Juliet- Dire Straits
Untitled-The Cure
Disarm-Smashing Pumpkins
Madam George-Van Morrison
April come she will-Simon and Garfunkel.
There is a light that never goes out-The Smiths

I have a black, cynical heart, but Gordon Lightfoot always brings a tear to my eye.

Al’s version has a vulnerability to it, which I enjoy. Just like Willie Nelson’s Always On My Mind.

These are about 50 years old but”Time in a Bottle” and theme from original “Brian’s Song”.

Nothing compares to you is very sad but I think it's wrong for my situation because he is awful and I'm not sad about him, I'm sad for me! I'm looking for a real sad song about feeling like I wasted my life loving someone that didn't even care about me, let alone love me back. And now I'm old and damaged and I feel like I'll never have anyone love me in my whole life.

Don’t think twice, it’s alright - Joan Baez

I ain’t saying you treated me unkind
Coulda done better, but I don’t mind
You just kind of wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s alright
