Most heartbroken songs ever

I'm currently divorcing my husband. I've been strong and angry, but totally I'm just feeling heartbreakingly sad. I've tried some Taylor swift songs but they just aren't sad enough. Anyone got any recommendations for some songs I can just be utterly broken to for an hour before I sick it all back up and crack on. I've currently got hurt by Jonny cash on but it's not quite the vibe I want.

The Kate Bush one reminds me of a miscarriage I had years back and always makes me cry. Love the last one (translate the lyrics)

I am also going through seperation/divorce, it is also 100% my decision, I am also certain it is the right thing and I am also very very sad about it all. So you are not alone.

My 'miserable as fuck' playlist includes 'A Love So Beautiful' by Roy Orbison. Just awful/beautiful, utterly destroys me.

Editing: sorry, just read your update about him being awful and you feeling you wasted your time. Will have another think.

Just When I Needed You Most by Randy VanWarmer. Also Every Day Hurts by Sad Cafe, absolute killer.

Thanks everyone for the song recommendations. Some really good news ones and some old favourites I'd forgotten about too! Today is a new day, and I'm back in to my strong women, don't need a man songs!!

Made a playlist for this very purpose during my last break up: music.apple.com/gb/playlist/hurty-heart/pl.u-P6EFL2xeR5

speakball · 12/10/2026 07:43

taylor swift bon iver exiles kills me. also Margaret Lana del ray because it’s what i want but may never have. poetry gets me deeper op. root around on the web for good poems about grief, loss etc. it might unlock a new level for you. (round it off with poems about hope and healing though! it’s all about balance)

Goodbooks2026 · 12/10/2026 07:49

If you need a good cathartic music-related cry, recommend watching The Voice UK! Also having a rough time and just discovered it having ignored these types of programmes for years.

‘Baby Come Back’ by Player is a great post-break up song to sing in the shower.

OhForTheWeekend · 12/10/2026 08:03

maybe in one of your angrier moments

Caught Out There by Kelis

The lyrics may not fit, but the chorus ( I hate you so much right now) could hit the spot.

The Winner Takes it All by ABBA. Agnetha is an absolute master at putting emotion into a song. She always looks like she is in the verge of tears when she is singing it too. Goodness knows how she managed to perform this shortly after her own divorce!

Many ABBA songs incorporate some
some melancholy. They are really good at this.

I have a black, cynical heart, but Gordon Lightfoot always brings a tear to my eye.

It’s one of my favourite tracks of all time, it’s so melancholic and beautiful
