Access to the enclosure was obviously doable. It shouldn't be. If there are to be dangerous animals on view, surely the walls/fences/glass should be as high as possible with suitable deterrents for climbing over.

I am so sad for that man. Who knows what went on in his head. Doesn't matter if he was bad or mad, he's dead. RIP.

See I knew carers would be blamed. Carer is most likely a woman on minimum wage unable to restrain an adult male. Blame the health care system instead. It is very sad what happened. This man was clearly having some kind of episode. As a mother of a severely autistic child anyone who is going on about the safety of the tiger but unable to feel a shred of compassion at the same time for a human being who died, just remember how lucky you are that you and your children live a normal life and that this won't ever affect you.

Did you not read the comment from the woman you just quoted and slated?

Dittyditty · 10/10/2026 19:23

The man died

How do you police that?

Nobody has to share a diagnosis of anything to get zoo tickets.

Do we need to get to the point where you have to disclose your lack of MH concerns, or you’re not getting in?

Tricky isn’t it? I don’t know the answer
But it’s more of a deep rooted issue than zoo entry, clearly.
How we dismiss mental health issues pre crisis and ‘care’ for those with severe disabilities seems to me (from a very thankful outside perspective) barbaric and fundamentally leaving families to fend for themselves as best they can

Strawberrydelight78 · 10/10/2026 19:24

Seen the headlines don’t want to see the video. wtf goes through peoples heads?

Seriestwo · 10/10/2026 19:24

I didn’t want to see the video but it is all overu
my social media. Please avoid, it’s awful.

Ok, if you get evacuated out the park in such circumstances do you get a refund? It’s very expensive to go there.

Is that all you’re thinking right now?! A man has died and animal likely traumatised too.

But it HAS affected other people. Kids had to watch a man being mauled by tigers when they were supposed to be having a lovely time at the zoo. Thats traumatic, utterly traumatic.

The same as the incident earlier in the year where the lad with learning difficulties threw the young child into the crocodile enclosure, what the hell were the carers doing at the time?

I work in adult social care and it breaks my heart when I see people in care not being properly watched over, I've seen many carers taking their service users out in to the community and spending half the time on their phones.

The trouble is some of these things happen so quickly and so unexpectedly that it’s impossible to predict them happening. I work as a care worker and no how challenging the job is.
Incidentally I was at a safari park earlier this year with friends and we happened to be behind a group of teenager with learning disabilities on a visit. They all had two to one support. Yet in the blink of an eye the young lad in front of us threw his teddy and one carer bent to pick it up for him. At exactly that moment the other carer was asked for the attraction tickets on her phone by the attendant. In that slip second this young lad span round and slipped out of reach of both his supporters. Fortunately we were in a queue and there was a one way gate at the end so he couldn’t have gone anywhere and I stepped in and help redirect him back. It wasn’t premeditated by the lad. It just happened. It wasn’t anyone’s fault and couldn’t really have been prevented.

But it can happen so quickly and so easily.

dustabsorber · 10/10/2026 19:25

There is a video on X. Someone took the time to film him lying on the ground remonstrating with the tiger. Where were the keepers? Wouldn't they have a plan for this? A way of enticing the tiger away?

MerryStork · 10/10/2026 19:25

It’s very sad for the young man’s family, I was really hoping he was going to be ok. I am concerned he had additional needs, or mental health , it’s even more tragic if this is the case. I’m glad the tiger is ok. I agree it wasn’t at fault.
I’ve been to Yorkshire wildlife only once so I may be wrong and confusing it with another zoo, but isn’t it that you look down at the tigers over a fenced area from a higher point? If it is what I’m thinking, I remember thinking that someone could easily fall in, if they leaned over too much! In fact I didn’t even like holding the dc up to see it was giving me anxiety! But that’s just me. We found another viewing point. But overall it was a lovely park and the staff seemed very caring and animals well looked after. Thoughts are with everyone at the park today! And the young man’s family.

IsitaHatOrACat · 10/10/2026 19:25

This is incredibly sad and distressing for all those connection with the incident.
A video of this came up on my facebook feed so I've reported it to facebook for disturbing content. I suggest others do the same. This doesnt need to be seen by the general public and I'm horrified that sharing shocking videos like this has become the norm.

They clearly did do that, the video isn’t exactly long is it

My son has severe LD and I’d like it to be genuinely impossible for him to jump, fall or otherwise end up in a tiger enclosure.

It’s not like people without his disability want to get in there, so surely nobody would be upset that the tigers were visible but inaccessible?

I just think the rule of thumb should be that if the animal can kill someone, let’s make it impossible for anyone to access that animal.

I think they’d probably automatically offer a ticket for another day, but if it was too far would maybe refund?
I’ve never been so don’t know layout but it probably wasn’t necessary to evacuate all areas and for whole day… might offer some compensation for being booted out??
But honestly I don’t know so I’m speculating. I’d be after refund and a discount off next visit as goodwill gesture but don’t know what they’re providing

Whilst I agree that carers are massively underpaid, I don’t agree that they wouldn’t have been able to look after him. Surely if they saw what he was trying to do, and couldn’t restrain him for any reason, they could’ve sought help?
also many people with severe additional needs have a 2:1 ratio. So if that was the case, I assume that they would have had that. I would also argue that if you cannot do the job, you shouldn’t be doing that job. I certainly wouldn’t take a job as a carer if I didn’t think I could keep that person safe!!

As I said in my post, my son has severe learning disabilities and is level 3 autistic, he’s in a special needs school. He will have serious additional needs for the rest of his life and will never live independently.
The amount of ‘carers’ I see out and about just sat on their phones is ridiculous. It is terrifying for his future.

I have also said that my heart goes out to the man’s family. I cannot imagine being in their position.

ItsABatFaceThing · 10/10/2026 19:29

@dustabsorber. What? In precisely 40 seconds you expected all of that to happen?

they do have a plan clearly. Just clearly takes more than just seconds to put into practice

Gutted they killed the tiger.

Reminds me of that gorgeous gorilla.

People should need to pass a test to enter zoos.

Oh, that was tragic. RIP Harambe.

Thankfully, it seems the tiger wasn’t harmed in this incident.

When will people learn that wild animals are exactly that? The fact that they are behind a fence and not roaming free in their typical habitat doesn’t change anything. They are beautiful, intelligent, majestic, powerful and incredibly dangerous creatures- they should be respected as such!

You’re like that man who wanted a refund for witnessing the Shoreham air disaster.

Tragedy strikes and you think about money. Shame on you

It’s grim not to realise not everyone is the financial position to write it off and go next weekend. I was responding to a fair question. Lots of people are counting the pennies and a day out like this it not something they can afford more than once every few years

Me and DH go to Yorkshire Wildlife Park regularly and there is no way someone could fall into the tiger enclosure.

It really would not be easy to get into the enclosure. The man, for whatever reason, was obviously very determined to do so.

Yes, used to make me nervous with Dd when she was little
