I was there feeding the tigers last Friday along with my DH, we were commenting to the keeper how gentle they were at taking the meat, the lady keeper was lovely and had nothing but praise for all the animals, and clearly loved them and her job, I'm devastated for the the staff and animals involved, it's such a shame this unfortunate person decided to commit such a silly act which unfortunately ended his life.

They tranquilise first surely, hoping Tiger is ok

Generally they don’t actually. If they shoot anything at top category animal then they shoot to kill it. Tranquillisers take too long to work and being shot by the dart can make them more aggressive.

They’ll use the gas canisters to try and distract them and get them in, which has worked in this case. But beyond they with an animal like a tiger they’d shoot it.

I do have to wonder at the stupidity of designing and building an enclosure for a predator capable of killing where it is possible for someone mentally unstable to climb into it in the first place

That’s like saying why are we stupid enough to make trains when mentally ill people can step in front of them. The enclosure would have been hard to climb in to, it’s not easy access, and it’s not unreasonable to think people won’t randomly go to extra effort to climb in an enclosure with a tiger

Oh my goodness, have a word with yourself. It's obvious this poor young guy had some kind of issue, people don't just throw themselves into a tiger enclosure for no reason.

Butchyrestingface · 10/10/2026 18:44

I blame Daniel and the Lion's Den.

The fable that launched a thousands ships over the wired fences of zoo enclosures. Sad

All fingers and toes crossed for the tiger and condolences to the man's poor family.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 10/10/2026 18:44

Omg this is nightmarish. I feel sorry for everyone - the tigers, the zoo staff, the other zoo goers, and the man himself who likely had MH problems.

Really hope this wasn’t a case of being failed by carers, there have been so many cases where they’ve taken their eye off the ball lately with awful consequences.

MarmaladeSandwichUnderMyHat · 10/10/2026 18:38

I saw the man making those signs and thought the same re a learning disability/difficulty 😢 which if this is the case makes most comments incredibly insensitive

He definitely seemed to have some learning difficulty or mental health issues but even if he didn’t, I don’t know why people are being so insensitive.

Fair enough call him an idiot or whatever but saying they’re glad he’s died etc is just disgusting.

One of the first things I learned in engineering is that you can make something proof against an accident. But it's impossible to make it proof against malice.

Starting with people who use to use pennies for fuses ....

Your use of the word ‘good’ is disgusting. Regardless of the situation, it’s likely that some people have lost a loved one.

I agree.

I do hope though there is some kind of review around the attendance of people with severe MH issues and similar at zoos. There have been too many of these now

GipsyandIvy · 10/10/2026 18:49

Just heard on ITV News that the man has died from his injuries.
I believe the tiger is alive.

EasternStandard · 10/10/2026 18:49

danniT2 · 10/10/2026 18:15

I agree the tiger didn’t deserve to be hurt but the comments about the man especially those gloating over his death are fucking gross.

Yes it’s not necessary. Who knows why he did it. Horrible all round.

Dahlia1234 · 10/10/2026 18:49

Haven't RTFT. But I was at the park today. Luckily didn't see it happen but saw the video circulating. So sad the man has died but the tiger was just behaving how tigers should behave and is fine.

Fair enough. I’m just thinking of the enclosures at my local zoo for big cats. I don’t actually think it would be possible to get in there

OurChristmasMiracle · 10/10/2026 18:51

It’s very sad that the man has died however it is NOT the tigers fault in the slightest. He may well have mental health issues and been suffering from some kind of delusions or even been suicidal. Ultimately we may never know the full truth. Thoughts go out to his family.

I hope yours or others children weren’t aware or traumatised by what happened 💐

I'd say this is currently the best of the news sources on this insane incident

"A man has died after being attacked by a tiger after jumping into its enclosure at a zoo in Yorkshire, police have said".

“Regarding rumours surrounding the condition of the tiger, the animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public”

Man dies after jumping into tiger enclosure at Yorkshire zoo

Police say man was pronounced dead at the scene after being attacked by tiger

MrsMitford3 · 10/10/2026 18:52

I feel sorry for the man-it is reported that he has sadly died-but it should not be possible to climb in to the enclosure.
At all.

And the tiger should not be put down.
It's a bloody tiger.
This is why tigers should not be in zoos.

And twitter should take down the footage.
Ghoulish.

What the fuck is wrong with you Op 🤬 Posting photos of the poor chap being attacked and asking if people have seen the sick videos circulating social media. He’s since died and police apparently struggled to contact his family , let’s hope the police managed to locate them before they saw any of the photos and videos. Imagine if it was your family member and you found out about their horrific death from a post on Mumsnet !!!

Hmm, did the OP know this at the time? I think not.

Thehop · 10/10/2026 18:53

bloody awful for all the staff involved, emergency services and witnesses. Not to mention his family.

j pi Ning those hoping the tiger is unaffected and sending thoughts to everyone who is.

To get into the enclosure at YWP someone would either have to climb an extremely high fence and then find a way over the angled fence which carries the electric current. Or jump from the walkway over the fence and the angled electric fence (a good 4-5 feet at least) and then survive the drop to the ground.

it’s very similarly done to enclosures in other UK zoos.

Mental health isn't just depression though. It could be intrusive thoughts, he might have felt like he had no choice. We just don't know.

Even if OP didn’t know at the time that he’d died they still shouldn’t have posted photos of him being attacked and asked people if they’d seen videos !!
