I read the post it says he’s lucky he wasn’t killed - he was killed. I also commented because people are saying about the tiger being killed, the tiger hasn’t been

But that was pages and pages and pages ago. If you’re going to bother commenting you should read the entire thread and keep up otherwise what’s the point?!

I don’t think we can really say if he made the choice in the true sense until more facts are known. If he does indeed have LD, legally he may not be considered to have made a choice and those saying he did are not just morally lacking but legally ignorant.

Eyewitnesses mentioned that right before he jumped the barrier, he was listening to music, dancing, and happily watching the animals. Some people at the scene noted he seemed to think he "just wanted to play with the tiger."
This is where the Mental Capacity Act 2005 comes in. Under Section 3 of the Act, a person legally lacks the capacity to make a decision if they cannot understand, retain, or weigh up the relevant information.
To make a true legal choice to enter that enclosure, he would have needed to process the information that a tiger is a lethal apex predator and weigh the immediate risk of death. If his learning disability or autism meant he genuinely believed he was entering a safe space to play with a large pet, the law states he did not have the capacity to make that choice, because he couldn't comprehend the reality of what he was doing.

That's heartbreaking. Where the hell were his carers? He sounded far too vulnerable to be left to his own devices, poor man.

But there is no need to put the animals through that. The whole point of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park is all the animals have huge enclosures where they can chose to go inside or outside as they please. That should not change because one person in the millions that have visited went into an enclosure.
Bearing in mind it's all assumption that he had mental health issues, he may have been on drugs it's not yet been published.
We cannot change the world for the minority.
There are issues with care I agree that's what needs to be dealt with. Again we don't know if that was the issue.

Exactly.

There is absolutely no need to change it and I hope they aren't required to.

SupernaturalAddict · 11/10/2026 19:35

Given the well documented issues with social care, carer recruitment and an increase in those needing support not to mention the increase in anti social behaviour I believe it would be safer for both visitors and the animals to be inclosed and viewed through windows.

Just because this is the first instance in x number of years doesn't mean that safety and safeguarding shouldn't be improved. There is always room for improvement and more that can be learnt

Wow so you’d rather all the animals in zoos and wildlife parks had no fresh air whatsoever.

Or we could just ensure that people only visit a zoo if they’re not a risk to the animals/themselves and/or they’re going to be cared for properly while they’re there.

Betterversionofme · 11/10/2026 19:44

It's wonder humans survived so far.

According to the news tonight the man is dead, The tiger is okay.

Brilliant, no one knew, thanks for letting us know

Not to mention the fact that more people wouldn't go if it was just looking at them through a window so they'd probably have to close anyway.

It's completely impossible, anyway. Wildlife parks have acres of space per enclosure for the bigger animals. They're not going to build and house them in giant boxes.

He was using Makaton signs. Anyone familiar with them can see that even if it hasn't been acknowledged publically.

The animals could still have the choice to be outside or inside as they like. I think Chessington used to manage this before it's recent changes. Maybe the way forward is something closer to a safari park where the visitors are confied to a bus and the animals can roam.

Changes are always made for safety, the airline industry does this very well.

That's not what I wrote. Having the people view them through windows doesn't mean the animals have to be inside, itjust means the people are confined.

and what happens when someone decides to get off the bus in the middle of the lion area?

Nothing can be 100% risk free. Nothing.

The correct terminology is very easy to find.

It is not our job to educate the ignorant.

You have still not answered. Out of your arse? You feel that you can educate 'the ignorant'. I suggest that you have a go. I am far from ignorant., Contrarily.

Your post is irreverant and offensive.

The doors can be locked, things can always be made safer. Not learning from this andputting extra measures in place to stop it happening again is the opposite of safeguarding and/ or risk assessing.

Someone determined enough will find a way. Doors unlock.

There's also risk assessing and deciding that no changes need to be made as it wasn't preventable such as the crocodile incident a few months ago. The crocodile enclosure didn't have to be changed at all despite a similar high viewing platform.

The original post in that exchange was mine, asking that we stop using phrases like “disturbed,” “moron” or “low ability people.”

If you are indeed not ignorant, I assume you already know why I said that, therefore it wasn’t really aimed at you.

Exactly. A bus is more risky and has more potential for error than a 5 metre fence! It’s not the parks that need to change,

There shouldn't be any changes to how the animals are housed. This was a lone incident and a guy who scaled a high secure fence. Why should animals countrywide be made to live in less natural surroundings, and the experience of millions of people be tempered because of the actions of one person?

We don't even have any confirmation that this person had special needs yet.

However, it's not that long ago that a man with special needs threw a child into a crocodile enclosure- clearly it's imperative that measures are put in place around the care of people with SEN in public spaces rather than changing public spaces.

The freedom and needs of the majority shouldn't be limited to accommodate the minority in my view.
