This is an incredibly sad incident for everyone involved, utterly tragic and shows how little empathy and understanding people have for those with disabilities.

You've not heard of self injurious behaviour. Being shut in a 'safe room' is likely to cause that in many cases. That's why hospital settings are appalling for many with a learning disability.

Not if it’s sufficiently padded and insulated.

I worked as a support worker for people with learning disabilities.

One of the gentlemen was obsessed with emergency vehicles. He was convinced that they needed his help when they had their lights and sirens on.

It started off relatively harmless, and as it was a special interest we would take him on trips to the fire station and to talks about emergency services.

Then it escalated into dangerous territory. He would start running towards them, across roads or anything else that was in his way. He was 6 ft 2 and a big bloke, I was 21 and 9 stone wet through so it was terrifying. I could not physically stop him, but my boss insisted I should keep taking him out without any extra help or cover because 'we can't afford to have two staff just for him'.

He started getting so angry if one went past outside and I wouldn't open the locked front door (had to keep it locked due to ither residents who were a flight risk and non verbal). I had to dodge a fire extinguisher that was thrown at my head once.

I ended up quitting. I genuinely loved my job, but felt I couldn't keep the service users safe in those conditions. And honestly, it just was not worth the pay I was getting.

Last I heard he had to go into a secure unit. Seeing this story made me feel so sad, as I wondered if this young man was possibly similar.

He should’ve been in a secure unit since day 1. The fire extinguisher could’ve killed you.

It's secure enough for him. You do realise that not all people with a learning disability are interested in running off. They are individual human beings with individual needs just like you and me.

Yes but surely he’s not safe alone if he ever ventured out? People can be unpredictable like this poor lad.

That doesn't stop someone biting themselves or poking their own eyes out due to the level of distress they have been put in.

Yes and if that happened they would have to intervene.

The problem is that zoos are inherently more cruel and abusive to animals than leaving them in their natural environment, so it’d make more sense to ban zoos. An outcome I’d be happy with because I find it horribly depressing seeing animals caged for the entertainment of humans.

It's not a zoo, it's a wildlife park. In their natural environment, Amur tiger numbers dropped to 20 or 30 individuals and it is only through conservation efforts, including those at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, that numbers in the wild have been pushed back up to 500 and there's still a long way to go before they are no longer in danger of becoming extinct.

Agreed. Can't believe some of the posters on here. The man was apparently signing "no" and "bad" at the Tiger in Makaton which suggests he had no idea of the danger he was in. His carers may have failed him, but that doesn't mean everyone with disabilities should be locked up, FFS.

Nobody is saying they should all be locked up. But first the poor toddler thrown to the crocodiles and now this; plus however many incidents which go unreported. There’s clearly a crisis. And safety must come first, for everyone.

What do you propose?

Unless someone was in the room 24/7 then how would they know to intervene?

ForQuirkyTiger · 11/10/2026 16:08

What happened was very sad - but the tiger was defending it's territory.

I suggest a CCTV control room.

Please try to understand that people with a learning disability are human beings, as human as anyone else.

That, as you heard, care in the community has failed.

PatCliftonspostbag · 11/10/2026 16:12

I was at Knowsley safari park over the summer holidays when a young girl got into the giraffe enclosure and was running towards the giraffes who had their backs to her.
Her mum had to run in after her, they were both very very lucky as the giraffes did spot them and started to run towards them.
The mum was understandably really upset but the little girl didn't appear to have any understanding of the danger she had been in.

I know that. But we can’t treat them as ‘anyone else’, because it would endanger them and other people.

The man whos died? Good one! Wtf

the reports I had seen stated that the tiger died and that the man had minor injuries.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 11/10/2026 16:14

I think some things are just tragic accidents that we can't mitigate against - I'm amazed anyone managed to climb into that enclosure.
We tolerate a level of risk in society, like the 1,538 UK road deaths in 2025 plus however many serious injuries, we tolerate suicides on railway lines, we don't fence off motorway bridges or oceans or even quite crumbling cliff faces... Life isn't without risk but honestly this was a tragic but I'd guess one-off occurance.

"They". Who is "they"?

The reason these two cases have recieved so much attention is because they are so very unusual. There is no "crisis".

Ffs this has literally been confirmed as untrue by every media outlet via police statement for nearly 24 hours now!

I have this American couple who I'm friends with living in San Diego (CA), they have a 7 year old child wth down syndrome. While visiting San Diego zoo their child got lost, apparently the parents went to buy ice cream and when they turned round the child was gone. Police was called. 2 hrs later the kid was found inside the penguin enclosure happily playing with them completely covered in mud.

yep, People with mental health issues visit zoos, museums, parks and fairs, and these things happen. Are we going to make all visitors go through an IQ test before entering the zoo?

I suspect they meant a crisis in care for those who are in need of it.

(For the record, I have a teenage son with severe complex autism who attends a complex needs school. I can see many sides to all this).
