There are a lot of issues surrounding care. While a lot of people are now being critical of community care not being appropriate, I am not sure people are comfortable with institutionalisation either and going back to mental asylums.
The poster who wrote about being a small woman against a big man is correct - many people that work in any caring role are female. I cannot work with some sen children in my school as they are the same size as me, stronger than me and run faster than me and this is in primary school. So I definitely agree that as a society something needs to be done to support families and individuals, but how is the difficult decision.

I know that. But we can’t treat them as ‘anyone else’, because it would endanger them and other people.

I don't think you know that. I can also see that you know far less about learning disability than I do and you don't want to be educated either.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 11/10/2026 16:17

I suspect they meant a crisis in care for those who are in need of it.

(For the record, I have a teenage son with severe complex autism who attends a complex needs school. I can see many sides to all this).

Edited

I hope so. Because that is true.

the reports I had seen stated that the tiger died and that the man had minor injuries.

Keep up

Not if it’s sufficiently padded and insulated.

I spent a long time in psychiatric units and have seen people dig holes in their arms with their own nails and hit themselves in the head harder than you'd think was possible, along with all forms of very imaginative self-harm

We still have mental hospitals where people get locked up for years and put on whacking great doses of whatever will make them easiest to manage. It's just kept secret now. 19thC asylums were very conspicuous and integrated with the community, really, when compared to modern-day ones.

Are you living in a cave?

peppy23 · 11/10/2026 16:26

I mean how would you fix it? You say nobody is saying “they” should all be locked up (they’re people btw same as me and you) so what else would you propose to make sure safety comes first for everyone like you stated?

Agree. This whole conversation string is actually advocating for the institutions that were phased out sixty years ago to be brought back. I agree something needs to be done because provision and support in many instances is either inadequate, inappropriate or non existent, but I think in the 21st century we should be able to do better than glorified padded cells !!

It isn’t kept secret at all. These facilities exist for patients who have no expectation of being able to live independently or without significant support. And the ‘whacking great doses’ are to treat severe and enduring mental health conditions, not to make management easier. Many facilities also take patients who have been sectioned under the mental health act for their own protection and for that of society. The section isn’t always permanent and they are not just ‘locked up’ but actively treated.

Yep. My background is in disability support - including a broad range of mental health conditions. My experience is similar.

One of the things that horrifies me about this is that people filmed the man being mauled and then posted the videos on social media. With sound. It continued to be distributed after we knew he had died. I was scrolling Snapchat last night and there it was, no warning, and I’m fuming that I was subjected to even a split second of it. It’s fucking ghoulish

Exactly the same happened to me on FB, from an account I don’t even follow. It made me feel physically sick.

rolloverbeethoven · 11/10/2026 16:37

@Cherrytree86 got it wrong, but there's no need to be nasty. Perhaps I missed updates too, but how on earth did he get into the enclosure?

GreenEyesMillennial · 11/10/2026 16:38

OtterlyAstounding · 11/10/2026 13:44

While I agree that this is a sad news piece, and people shouldn't gloat that a man was killed... Literally everyone in the world is someone's child, and I'm not about to get all sentimental over every human ever because they (obviously and unavoidably) have parents, and I also happen to have children. That's just silly.

Fair enough!

OpenScroller · 11/10/2026 16:39

ForQuirkyTiger · 11/10/2026 16:08

What happened was very sad - but the tiger was defending it's territory.

There's no BUT here IMO and I don't understand the mentality of people who think there is.

A young man who very clearly did not understand the danger he put himself in for WHATEVER reason, was slashed, clawed and had chunks bitten out of him by an extremely powerful, savage, beast leading to him being killed within a few minutes of getting into it's enclosure.

A brutal, gruesome, bloody, savage painful death for an obviously vulnerable and cognitively impaired young man.

It's a horrific tragedy. There are no buts.

I want to know why these animal parks do not have to legally ensure the enclosures of these dangerous animals, that they chose to house, are totally secure from inside and outside.

That should be pretty goddamn basic!

RIP to that poor young man who was dancing, maybe had an obsession with and was excited about seeing the tigers, who thought he could pet them and didn't understand what the tiger was going to do to him. I don't want to imagine the shock, fear and pain he felt.

Even as a lifelong ethical vegetarian who isn't disgustingly hypocritical, unlike meat eaters are about the worth of animals they raise to suffer so they can eat them and the other more aesthetically or emotionally pleasing animals they pamper and protect, I have no hesitation in saying the tiger should have been shot dead immediately to save that lad. I don't betray my own species either.

The enclosures ARE secure though - I'm amazed anyone managed to get into the tiger enclosure there.

Perhaps human beings should be nowhere near that "extremely powerful, savage, beast".
Not to take away from the tragedy of the man who lost his life but he is not the only victim here. So is the tiger as well as all animals held in captivity so that people can gawp at them and witter on about conservation and breeding programmes.

Edited to say, I can recommend the film Black Fish which tells the story of an orca pushed beyond his limit who went on to kill one of his trainers.

Dumb comment.

Obviously they are NOT secure if a man, not in full control of his faculties, was able to get inside without staff being aware or able to stop him!

Another dumb comment.

The young man is the only victim here.

The savage animal was fully protected not only from death during this event but also from death in the wild.

In fact I wonder if there was more concern about saving it than preventing it from killing the human.

The victim wasn't responsible for the animal being in captivity.

redboxer321 · 11/10/2026 16:52

Agree. But as awful as it must have been, I'd take that rather than dying a slow, painful death that some people are forced to endure. The greatest threat to all animals including human beings is... human beings.

Like I say, I do not want to take anything away from that poor man who died a horrific death. I hope he can RIP.

If what you say is true then who was he with? and why is the blame on YWP and not the person who was supposed to be supervising him?

YWP has been open since 2009 with no previous incidents or safety issues. You absolutely can't get in, unless you are very determined like this man seemed to be.

The man also would've likely been dead before they even had a chance to get to the enclosure and shoot it because it's a tiger and that's what they do.

Why a roof though ? Why not fencing wire so it’s still open but no-one can get in ?

Because there are some large trees in the enclosure and they would have to be cut down.
