No

There doesn't need to be restrictions on people with disabilities.

Society needs to adapt to make things accessible for disabled people.

An attraction needs to be made safe so that can't happen. There needs to be no risk of someone climbing in & security to intervene or call emergency services if someone attempts to break in.

If the zoo is not accessible & safe to everyone including disabled people then the zoo needs to close or be restricted, not the other way around.

Look up 'ableism' & 'disability discrimination'

Yorkshire Wildlife is safe but how can they plan for someone climbing over a couple of tall fences and jumping down into a tiger enclosure?

Nowhere can be made completely 100% safe. Shall we ban trains because someone might get hit by one? Ban open water because someone might drown? Put huge fences around mountains in case someone tries to climb it and falls?

The wildlife park (it is NOT a zoo) does not need to close

Maybe wait for the news to release an official statement before being so opinionated.

No, I disagree.

Making it ‘accessible’ by guaranteeing nobody can ever enter the enclosure, would meet putting a roof on it and blocking out the sky.

That’s not fair on the already caged animals. Their needs come before those of the disabled people to look at them, IMO (or anyone else)

I can undetstand how the videos came about.. filming the tigers, than the man climbs in, you dont know whats going fo happen. But posting them online is inexcusable. They should have just been oassed to the authorities.

Exactly. I can understand wanted to record something for say the police. But posting it? Its the most degrading thing for the family. Knowing even the death wasn't private. Horrible

A child would not be able to attend this attraction alone as it would not be safe for them to do so. Therefore if an adult has the mental age of a child then surely they shouldn’t be able to attend alone. I don’t think that’s ableism or disability discrimination.

It certainaly isnt ableism or discrimination but do be aware there are tens of thousands, millions probably of people with the mental age of children, not all of them receive any service at all for anything. Unless there is an order in place, most services are consent based so a person can refuse to engage with adult services/MH teams (if they had comorbid SEN and MH).

shuggles · 11/10/2026 13:58

@fatphalange There has been no suggestion the tiger has been or should be killed :/ it is completely fine

A number of earlier posts incorrectly reported that the tiger had been killed, before it was confirmed that the tiger was fine.

It’s impossible to eliminate all risk. YWP already had extensive precautions in place. It should be ascertained in advance whether such places are suitable for vulnerable people and if not then other venues should be chosen, or the number of people accompanying the person should be increased.

Unfortunately and very sadly it took place in a very public way.

That is outrageous isn't it. I can't imagine ever doing that. 'Oooh, let's film the man getting killed and then put it on Facebook and YouTube.'

That's 22 carat Psychopath behaviour.

Agree it is awful behaviour, but it is something the US government wants to do.

The service is overwhelmed. We have a LOT of mentally delayed kids and teens and this is only going to get worse. I know a lot of under 20s who just aren’t age appropriate for whatever reason and rely heavily on mum and dad parenting them like they’re 5 or 6. It’s such a worry.

I’ve said for a while we need to get ahead of this and start urgently looking into building very big (pleasant) care homes for adults, where multiple adults can be looked after safely with minimum staff by ensuring they’re secure. It’s not going to happen though.

Anjelika · 11/10/2026 14:31

One thing I don't get is how this person actually knew how to get into the enclosure. So many people have said that it would have been almost impossible to penetrate the enclosure yet someone with (according to some) the mental age of a toddler managed to work it out. I've not been to YWP so maybe once you've scaled the fence or dropped from the bridge, it's obvious. Just struck me as strange.

Another thing I don't understand is that in none of the reports or accounts of what happened I've read is there any mention of carers/parents/friends hysterically trying to call the guy back. I've not watched any of the videos so perhaps on there they can be heard but, if I was with someone either as a friend, parent or carer, I would be absolutely screaming my head off to try and get him to come back before it was too late.

I agree. No human has "a right" to see a tiger up close.

Thats patently ridiculous. Adults without SEN dont have the right to go anywhere they want to in the world either.

The only thing I’ve read is that he was with similar aged men.

I really hope this isn’t a case of him just being let loose in public so he’s somebody else’s problem.

We do have cases like that round here. A learning disabled man approached and kissed my sister, seriously distressing her in front of her toddler daughter. They had a carer with them though that did fuck all.

Well disability social theories dont support that sort of mass care. I was working MH when care in the community came in, its politically and financially convenient to have a model that pushes individual independence but most service users get caught up (and their families) in theories of 'inclusion' and so specialist services/care/provisions are not the priority.

Aka, they're left to fend for themselves. This is what this leads to.

And you get people throwing round words like 'abelism' like it means something, its a like a buzz word at the moment, at any suggestion that quite frankly there are some things that some people cant or shouldnt do. I cant ride a bike safely on the roads, i have vertigo, I have panic attacks, I have poor balance. I would like all the cars off the road please to meet my needs, Im a danger to traffic but I'll turn that around and say that I should be able to wobbly dangerously, stopping and starting unpredictably in traffic and if I get harmed thats their fault. The roads should be made safe for me.

Agree and that’s why I don’t ride a bike! I wouldn't be safe on the roads, to myself or others.

We really do need secure homes for disabled adults. The parents caring for them will all be too older to continue one day. Just look at the number of posters on here with complex needs kids. It’s disaster looming.

Well as is always the case on this site, MN seems to divde people into neat little packages. Someone with poor MH or SeN or ND cannot behave in a way that is 'bad', its always assigned to their condition

It couldnt possibly be that someone is just unpleasant or wants to harm others.

It couldnt possibly be that the person with SEN (if so) is also a drug addict and is off their face, but equally that would usually be put down to self medicating

Unless of course its a husband or boyfriend on here behaving badly, then 'its not thing to do with LD/MH/ND, that doesnt make someone controlling or refuse to share chores or a bad parent'

Yes it may do, to all of the above where applicable.

I totally agree with you. Ive been shouted down so much about this. I dont care by the way because I know Im right, but the social flavour since around the 90s has been against this.

@ExtraHotDoubleShot what is your opinion on why this is the case? Are there more people in this position than previously, or less provision. Or both?

Yes. People get worked up and think I mean very unpleasant ‘asylums’. I mean secure small villages where they can live most of their lives in it comfortably and with dignity, while working on economies of scale to make it affordable.

I think people expect/want too much for some disabled people when actually they would be less distressed and more comfortable with a smaller and more predictable life. There used to be a ‘day care’ centre near me as a child where adults with LD would do things like crafts, singing, have visits from petting zoos who would bring rabbits etc. I think we need to do this more rather than taking very unstable people to zoos with wild animals, or heavily populated public areas with potential for distressing behaviour

Why a roof though ? Why not fencing wire so it’s still open but no-one can get in ?
