@DearCritic a man is mauled to death and your first thoughts are a refund? Fucking hell

No, it wasn’t my first thought. Somebody commented asking what would happen / if there would be a refund and it’s a completely fair question. I thought that’s a fair question and there must be some devastated families to have a rare day out to have it ruined by a man’s stupidity to go into the enclosure after feeling he wasn’t doing a good enough job of winding tiger up from outside. It’s not exactly an attack, or an accident.

Where are people seeing that the tiger is dead as no news reports are saying it. I’ll be so so angry if they kill that beautiful animal he’s done nothing wrong. Thoughts are with the man’s family and the poor people that witnessed what happened

They’re lying.

I do have to wonder at the stupidity of designing and building an enclosure for a predator capable of killing where it is possible for someone mentally unstable to climb into it in the first place

There is a raised walkway so he could have jumped. Although as it is pretty high up I would be surprised that anyone could land without serious injury.

I wonder if the park will add more fencing at the walkway to prevent someone from jumping in future.

The whole incident is absolutely shocking, and I'm glad I wasn't there to witness it. As I live in South Yorkshire all the local Facebook pages and my Facebook feed is full of this horrible incident, and some of the comments are awful.

My thoughts are with his family.

The tiger is fine. The man is dead

Well hindsight is clearly an easy lens to view this through. But that enclosure looks quite open for such dangerous animals

It really isn't. 3 sides have very high robust fencing. I'm not good at estimating but I would say over 12ft. The walk way is as described by a PP. The walk way is to the side and above the enclosure. There is fencing below and then a second fence so if you fell (a climb over wooden railing would be required first) then you should hit the ground between the two fences.

Obviously the likelihood is that anyone who would do this has some kind of issue. Don't be so heartless/quick to judge.

I am West Yorkshire so my feed is also full of it and some people seem genuinely happy that the man has died. I know it was not wise to jump in and clearly he was not well, but surely we cannot/should not be happy about his death. I hope the poor family does not see any of those comments.

For those talking about the design of the enclosure I have taken a screenshot from Googlemaps (might take some time to show).

To get into the enclosure from the high walkway you would have to jump (not just drop) over the wooden barrier onto the metal fence. I think from memory there is a gap between the two - it's difficult to tell from that angle. You would then need to climb up and over the metal fence and jump into the enclosure.

Posters saying it must be easy or is easy to get into the enclosure are talking total rubbish.

What about the A1? Just as dangerous to enter it as a pedestrian. Should be barrier it like Trump has walked off Mexico?

There’s only so much they can do to make the area safe. They can’t forsee how vulnerable people are going to act. Visitors have responsibility too

Yes carers should do a basic risk assessment and if people are a risk for running away and climbing fences then maybe a wildlife park isn't the place to take them.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park does modern zoo design excellently. The animals have varied, spacious enclosures and the choice of how much they wish to be viewed by visitors. By using things like raised structures, visitors get the chance to have views unimpeded by physical barriers.

I was there in the summer holidays and it was absolutely beautiful viewing these magnificent tigers through my binoculars. I could see the texture of their fur and the expressions on their faces.

Unfortunately the behaviour of some of the adults was pretty poor, for example trying to touch the lemurs in the walkthrough enclosure. Or making noises to try and get the animals' attention.

It’s not the refund that’s the issue, it’s the grabby ‘discount as a good will gesture’ that’s grim. I’m not in a financial position to write it off, I’d not expect a good will gesture though for missing out as a result of someone’s death. There’s always people like you lurking around in situations like this though so I’m sure the wildlife park will get a few of you.

A discount on next day out there is grim? People will have spent petrol, public transport etc to get there. Travelling 2-3 hours perhaps. It’s not just the cost of tickets for lots of people. I’m sure everything is sweeter when you’re on a high horse!
I maintain the question I responded to is a fair question, and when I read the question I thought ‘of course, this must be stressful for many families’, and what I felt would be fair/ what I would expect. I hope any affected families are offered this and can enjoy a lovely day out there another time.

shellster80 · 10/10/2026 19:57

We used to be pass holders at YWP and used to go weekly so I’ve seen that tiger enclosure dozens of times. Yes, technically it isaccessible clearly but Jesus it would take some doing! They can’t possibly cover every eventuality or account for what goes through every persons mind. I’ve no idea how he’s managed it, even jumping from the bridge as there’s a gap and then another fence

He likely has learning difficulties or mental health issues?

LancashireButterPie · 10/10/2026 19:58

The comments that have been made about this poor young man are horrible. He clearly had LD and needed support. He was failed.
My heart goes out to his family.

I have worked with an organisation that takes young people with ASD out for the day (often a zoo) the families pay around £100 a day for this. Some of the "carers" I worked with had no idea what they were doing and we're more interested in chatting between themselves than interacting with the service users.

Yes, expecting a discount is grim. I think I was pretty clear about that.

It’s not a fair question
maybe a few weeks down the line the impacted customers ask the park
but right now?!? The young man, his family, the carers, the keepers, the witnesses, the emergency services, the tiger. How could ANYBODY think about anything other than the impact on all these people, it will be life changing, I can’t even imagine how traumatic it has been

a day out missed…. Really ???

I think it’s grim to pretend not to understand , or not care, how horrible some families will be feeling worried about money wasted, not just tickets but getting there. And worried they won’t have the chance again for years.

ItsPickleRick · 10/10/2026 20:02

Allthepictureframes · 10/10/2026 19:34

Perhaps spend your pennies on NOT watching animals in captivity? And try to give a care to the man who died, rather than focusing solely on your own interests.

I’m going to defend YWP here. The animals there are all rescued from horrific conditions. The lions for example were rescued from a Romanian zoo where they had been living in tiny cages.

I would actually actively encourage people to spend their pennies here so that they can continue their wonderful conservation work.

I complete agree that the comment about a refund was in bad taste.

You couldn't climb into that enclosure by accident. It's just Darwinism in action.

Mooselove · 10/10/2026 20:03

shellster80 · 10/10/2026 19:42

Do you know what Yorkshire Wildlife Park actually do? They aren’t stealing animals from the wild, they are hugely into conservation.

Quite a few ignorant posters on here. Yorkshire Wildlife Park is not really a zoo and they do fantastic work.

The lions they rescued from Ukraine would have died if they had not brought them here. They had been abandoned when the war started (one of them was being kept in a flat with no other lion for company). They were shell shocked and traumatised and they now seem so happy with their new life. That is just one of the amazing stories of the Park's animals
