There is no need to live stream it, that is a disgusting act.

Imagine all the people that the fees from the subscription that could be helped ? You could cloth some cold, feed some hungry, house some homeless.

I mean you'd have to imagine, because obviously it won't happen.

But it does suggest there could be a massive untapped revenue stream for our own cash strapped country. I mean no need to dismiss it out of hand.

A friend of mine was very anti the death penalty, until her grandmother was murdered. After that she changed her mind. She said that the thought of her taxes going every month to feed and shelter the person who had murdered her grandmother in cold blood was horrendous. I can see both points of view.

I heard something on the radio that said that executions are more expensive than keeping someone alive.

IfIHadAHeart · 09/10/2026 12:43

It is not a deterrent any more than the threat of prison. Most of us are not murderers. For those who have it in them, they are not getting to the crucial moment and then stopping whilst thinking “oh, better not. Death penalty”. It’s ludicrous to suggest it works like that.

SerendipityJane · 09/10/2026 12:44

Anyone planning a party for the event ?

I am sure we could get a thread going about what to wear and what snacks to serve ?

Crispy wings anyone ?

He killed 13 people and injured 32. Anyone more concerned with the way his correct sentence is carried out than the victims of the crime itself needs their moral compass checked

it’s not about ‘more comcern’. What he did was horrible and he needs to feel the consequences It’s about having some sort of belief that we are better than him the death penalty undermines that, live streaming it blows it completely away

Dollymylove · 09/10/2026 12:44

Nah he murdered 13 people in cold blood. He needs to rot in eternal hell

NCOneDayOnly · 09/10/2026 12:45

What an abominably fucked-up country the USA is.

Also remember he's a paraplegic and in a wheelchair. So the actual question being debated is whether they shoot him lying down or strap him in a wheelchair. Anyone comfortable with that needs to take a good long hard look at themselves.
And frankly should never again post on any thread about Dubai/ME that goes on and on about human rights abuses. I mean how is this any different from the Saudis chopping off the arms or public executions in Iran??

Saudis chopping off arms????? Wtf

I should think that streaming somebody being executed will be against the policy of any platform involved. May be an interesting moment for tech. I doubt it will go ahead, it’s just bluster and desperation, their government is finally falling to bits.

I really hope that the tech companies refuse to broadcast it, YouTube pull any videos etc.

Hegseth is insane saying that people need to be able to see it. People are capable of understanding what the death penalty means without actually seeing it being done. Or does he think the public are that stupid they can’t understand the concept?

JennyShaw · 09/10/2026 12:42

Im sure they will be people who would be happy to do it for free

May we normalise not sticking our noses into other countries’ judicial processes. We don’t like it when they do it to us.

It's nothing to do with the judicial process. It's offering the result up for entertainment that's problematic.

Why do you think people are more concerned about the live streaming than the victims? Just because they’re against the live streaming?

Would you say that the army sergeant who was shot 7 times in this attack and says he played dead to survive needs his moral compass checked? Because he has said he doesn’t agree with the live-streaming of it.

He is in agreement with the death penalty and the firing squad for him, and said he’d watch in person as happens with other executions, just not in agreement with the live-streaming. I assume the live streaming is what you meant by “the way his correct sentence is carried out”, since that’s the main debate. I doubt his objections come from being more concerned about the way it’s carried out than for the victims, since he is one.

Live by the sword ...

Killing people is only wrong if you kill first. If you choose to live beyond societal norms that's the risk you take.

I think that was his argument too. The US was killing people in the Middle East, and he swapped sides in the war, engaging in what he thought was a legitimate armed response.
Im pretty sure that the argument, ‘well, he started it’ isn’t really valid after primary school.

SerendipityJane · 09/10/2026 12:47

What ?! And lose that profit ?

I absolutely despair at the state of the world. And the number of people saying this is a good idea!??
You think the general public watching an execution will improve law and order, respect for life?

Agree fully

Notsooldcrock · 09/10/2026 12:48

LoisQ · 09/10/2026 11:04

I fully agree with the execution. But why live stream it?

As a deterrent ?

Uricon2 · 09/10/2026 12:48

Albert Pierrepoint (public hangman) was known for his care to make the executions he conducted as quick (in one instance, 7 seconds from condemned cell to lever being pulled) painless, untraumatic and dignified as possible.

I am totally opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances, but this shows it is possible to do it with at least some regard for civilised values. Torturing people to death as has happened in the litany of botched lethal injections is barbaric, the electric chair is barbaric and now encouraging people to watch a firing squad for entertainment (because what other reason could there be?) is barbaric.

malefields · 09/10/2026 12:49

I completely admit I’m often on the fence about the death penalty (generally leaning towards “no”), but recent events definitely shown why governments should not be deciding who dies.

JennyShaw · 09/10/2026 12:49

SerendipityJane · 09/10/2026 12:44

That's a clear breach of etiquette. Crispy wings are only for the electric chair.

Periperi2025 · 09/10/2026 12:49

HangryBrickShark · 09/10/2026 10:46

I don't really care. My sympathy is with the victims of those on death row. People go on about how unfair it is to put people to death, its inhumane, etc, etc.

What about the poor victims that have been raped, mutilated, tortured and everything in between? Young children and babies who are murdered? Teenagers who are violated and tortured?

What if the families of the victim doesn't believe in the death penalty. How do you think live streaming it affects them?

What if the familiy of the victim is also the family of the perputrator. How do youy think living streaming it affects them?

I don't believe in the death penalty at all, there have been too many misscariages of justices across human history.

But i thinkmif it is going to happen then a public spectacle is utterly barbaric and shame on anyone who watches it.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 09/10/2026 12:49

As the Romans said while gladiators fought to the death in the colosseum; ‘are you not entertained?’

Horrific.

Trump will LOVE it.

SonK · 09/10/2026 12:51

SharkyBait · 09/10/2026 10:55

It’s not about sympathy for the perpetrator. It’s about live streaming an execution for entertainment value. Do you really want to live in a world where that is seen as acceptable? I couldn’t care less about murderers either, but I don’t believe for a second something like this should be made into a spectacle for the masses.

As a side note, I find the hypocrisy of the USA sickening. They stand in judgement of other countries, throwing their weight around, criticising and acting like the saviours of the world/like they’re in a movie “saving the day”, and yet they are just as backwards as the countries in the Middle East that they condemn. And it’s worse in a lot of ways because they believe themselves as a country to be so forward thinking and progressive. They’re an utter joke as a nation.

It should become acceptable, perhaps then the rawness and realness of it all will serve as a deterrent for extreme crimes such as murder and torture.

Faceonthewrongfoot · 09/10/2026 12:51

Might as well just start putting on a Roman style circus. The Romans used to love a public death, the more gruesome the better. I'd thought we'd become more civilised as society in the last few thousand years, but clearly not in the US...
